Being middle class based on what you own?

Anyone seen this "quiz" in the telegraph - aside from the fact that it is probably just to flog certain items, anyone agree with this list or come out with all of them.

Hot tubs ffs? "vulgar" no? Wink

I own 5 out of 16 items and it said that I got "5 right" (sic) - no value judgment there! Hmm

MimiLeBonk · 29/09/2016 09:01

This is not the English class system, it can't be as it isn't decided on what you might own.

Ohmuther · 29/09/2016 09:01

Ha!
My ma would say that owning all that stuff proves you are rich rather than middle class and these days there are many working class people who earn much more than we do (plumbers, plasterers, roofers etc), as well as much less.
We are the poorer middle classes, over educated, under paid metropolitan public sector workers with no money for expensive toys. I certainly sound posh but most of my clothes come from charity shops (much to the horror of my working class neighbours).

The quiz is tosh.

hungryhippo90 · 29/09/2016 09:04

The quiz is crap. It doesn't even ask if you own your own home from what I can see?!, truly that would be a better indicator than if you have the barbecue!

SolomanDaisy · 29/09/2016 09:05

A bbq? Since when has that been a middle class status symbol? Pretty much everyone has had one for years. You can get them for a fiver.

WhisperingWind · 29/09/2016 09:08

I haven't looked at the quiz but surely BBqing and sitting in hot tubs are more associated with working rather than middle classes?

WhisperingWind · 29/09/2016 09:08

You've stumbled across the Footballer's Wives version of the class system! Grin

GiddyOnZackHunt · 29/09/2016 09:08

Vinyl? Have they confused middle class with middle aged?

ProfYaffle · 29/09/2016 09:08

I thought that too, and the coasters. Sorry, matching coasters.

(I got 4)

Mumofazoo · 29/09/2016 09:09

Apparently I'm solidly middle class for getting 5 Hmm

TathitiPete · 29/09/2016 09:09

I don't understand 'class' (not English). As far as I can see there are three, Working Middle and Upper. Would anyone care to define it? Halo

pregnantat50 · 29/09/2016 09:10

How many of those items does the queen own I wonder..

Cant see her at BBQ or in a Hot Tub, guess she falls short of the grade!

NicknameUsed · 29/09/2016 09:10

"I only own 4 out of 16 and I am very very middle class!"

Same here Mumof two, and I'm and out and out U according to Nancy Mitford on the following quiz Grin.

pregnantat50 · 29/09/2016 09:10

Yes, very true why would a middle class twenty something own a vinyl?

BlancheBlue · 29/09/2016 09:11

giddy Are you are young hipster? Wink Vinyl is a big thing in shoreditch type artisan coffee shops!

OP posts:
BlancheBlue · 29/09/2016 09:12

Pregnant - pop along to a shoreditch/ hoxton coffee place or bar and your view will be shattered!

Bogeyface · 29/09/2016 09:12

What is a smart TV anyway? I have seen loads of ads for them but have no idea what they are, I have a TV but I have never tested its IQ Hmm

I would think that not owning some of the things on that list is more middle class than owning them!

Teahornet · 29/09/2016 09:12

I agree with mrs, that list is slanted strongly towards the nouveau riche aspirational middle class, and completely omits the solidly middle and upper-middle types whose middle class-ness is more about cultural capital than objects. Coasters and hot tubs aren't remotely middle class, to mention two only.

Teahornet · 29/09/2016 09:13

Yes, but vinyl is 'young hipster urban mc', and highly unlikely to own an Aga or coasters!

BlancheBlue · 29/09/2016 09:14

TathitiPete No! Such attempts lead to massive disagreements, very different opinions and usually a bunfight!

OP posts:
IcedVanillaLatte · 29/09/2016 09:14

I thought middle class people hated big fancy TVs? If they absolutely have to have one, it's usually an 11" b&w one wedged somewhere incongruous like the kitchen.

MangoMoon · 29/09/2016 09:14

It's designed for the Hyacinth Bucket's of the world - in Britain, only the middle classes care what class they are perceived to be.

Everyone else (working & upper class) just get on with their lives and buy/wear/consume what they like.
The middle class lot are desperate to not be lumped in with the working classes so tend to cling to lifestyle or ideologies and wear them like a badge.

(Massive, huge generalisation but pretty much how the Telegraph have approached this quiz tbh - I'm sure most middle class people couldn't actually give a toss either and are just living their lives like everyone else!)

GiddyOnZackHunt · 29/09/2016 09:14

Blanche well yes but although my chin hairs may be starting to appear I'm never going to have a hipster beard because I'm an older tubby laydeee. With a fine collection of New Wave & Two Tone originals Grin

BlancheBlue · 29/09/2016 09:16

Surely coasters just "are" tbh - are they not a generic thing that prevents marks to tables?

OP posts:
NoCapes · 29/09/2016 09:16

A hot tub is middle class?
I'd say a hot tub was rather...low class

And matching coasters? Wtf? Don't all coasters come in a set? Confused
