Yes, a trivial AIBU but help to settle the argument!

I believe that crap is a swear word, albeit on the mild end of swearing

My friend believes it is not.

AIBU to think she is wrong and that crap is a swear word?!

It's a swear word in my family, as is knackered. Dd told my mum that one of her new teachers described himself as a git, dm was not happy at all Grin

Verbena37 · 18/09/2016 11:10

That's really interesting charleydavidson .
I, as I guess many others, was always told the Thomas Crapper story but it's wrong!

I still don't class it as a swear workd though and generally don't swear other than saying shit if I drop something on my foot etc.

zoestom5107 · 20/11/2018 16:32

A teacher said crap today

ErickBroch · 20/11/2018 16:37

I wasn't allowed to say it as a child/young teen in the house, and would avoid saying it around my grandparents. My family swear occasionally but it's not seen as something very pleasant for kids to say and I agree..

I tell DGS (Yr6) that crap and bitch are not swear words but they're not words they should use in front of adults.

Lovingbenidorm · 20/11/2018 23:51

Thomas Crapper invented the bog didn’t he?
I don’t consider ‘crap’ to be a swear word, surely the time to worry is when your lo says ‘fuck’

Lovingbenidorm · 20/11/2018 23:52

mog isn’t a ‘git’ a pregnant camel?

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 20/11/2018 23:59

Crap isn't a swear word.

Streambeam · 21/11/2018 00:11

I agree with you, yanbu, it is a mild swear word.

Amanduh · 21/11/2018 00:19

Not a swear word as such here, but rude.

moredoll · 21/11/2018 00:25

Yabu. "Crap''s not a swear word!

It might be mildly offensive to some listeners depending on the context, but you'd have to be really uptight to think that it's swearing.
It can be vulgar though, e.g."You're full of crap."

HotChocolateWeather · 26/11/2018 15:17

I would say it is a mild swear and generally mostly acceptable in everyday conversation but not always in a formal, educational or work environment.

Mild swear words - crap, sod, damn etc

Medium swear words -piss, shit etc

Major swear words - Fuck, cunt etc

Some swears are harder to classify. I never know where to classify words like wank, bollocks etc. Mild to medium maybe.
