Crap is a swear word

Yes, a trivial AIBU but help to settle the argument!

I believe that crap is a swear word, albeit on the mild end of swearing

My friend believes it is not.

AIBU to think she is wrong and that crap is a swear word?!

Surely the measure should be whether Netmums allows it in posts?

MewlingQuim · 16/09/2016 21:29

My mum hates all swearing and would get all upset about dad saying crap, but he still tried to get away with it.

Dad used to cringe if I said knackered for tired, because where he came from knackers were bollocks. Took me years to work out what was rude about it as he found it too embarrassing to explain Grin

Funny how different words are rude or acceptable to different people. DD says fart which I think is ok but others say no, DMIL referred to a fellow churchgoer a twat and I was shocked!

I do think crap is a swear word and I would discourage DD from saying it, but I know I swear far too much in front of her and sooner of later she will start repeating it all. Oops Blush

Lizmay12 · 16/09/2016 21:33

Mewling
Both my parents go mad if I ever say knackered but I can't help saying it now.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 16/09/2016 21:33

On another note it's better than poo you know when they go through saying everything poo-poey faze.

blueygreentortoise · 16/09/2016 21:36

YABU in that "crap" is a swear word, now it is just the same as saying "rubbish"
YABU in saying "gotten" as another poster pointed out this is an Americanism and should not be used in the English language. Fed up with seeing it on Mumsnet. It is almost as bad as "should of" but that is just bad grammar rather then trying to be an American.

IncidentalAnarchist · 16/09/2016 21:40

Gotten is grammatically correct and dates back to Middle English so get tae fuck 😝

Crap is a swear word

IncidentalAnarchist · 16/09/2016 21:42

If IABU then so be it, I'll consider it impolite rather than swearing
But I wouldn't say 'could of'
That's just an unnecessary personal attack Angry

MapMyMum · 16/09/2016 21:45

Not in British English though incidental...only American English

IncidentalAnarchist · 16/09/2016 21:47

No, mainly used in American English but dates back to Middle English and is grammatically correct if uncommon

TempusEedjit · 16/09/2016 21:47

Going against the grain I'd say crap was a mild swear word. If they used it in a kids tv show for instance I'd think that was bad form.

blueygreentortoise · 16/09/2016 21:47

"The form gotten is not used in British English"
I rest my case, Thank you.

icelollycraving · 16/09/2016 21:49

I consider it a swear word. I'd be mortified if ds said it.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/09/2016 21:52

As we seem to have established that considering 'crap' to be a swearword is outdated, and that if you're not american, 'gotten' is even moreso, perhaps you might want to change your NN to 'ArchaicAnarchist'? Grin

IncidentalAnarchist · 16/09/2016 21:53

I'll happily be an archaic anarchist; modern anarchists are crap!

PaulAnkaTheDog · 16/09/2016 22:05

Omg, I've just discovered why my dad hates me saying 'I'm knackered'!. Thought he just being bonkers as usual.

Oysterbabe · 16/09/2016 22:08

I think it's a mild swear word.

nennyrainbow · 16/09/2016 22:10

I also thought it was a swear word. I wouldn't say it in front of the DCs.

BettyCrystal · 16/09/2016 22:14

We always swore at home. Fuck. Bollocks. Crap or Damn weren't used as often. Thought we were bad until I met my in-laws. Every second word is Fuck or Cunt. So it's different in every home!

PickAChew · 16/09/2016 22:15

Is it?

Shit.

PickAChew · 16/09/2016 22:20

What about ill gotten gains?

Americans carry stuff around in their fanny pockets. If I didn't know better, I'd wonder what the secret to such muscle control was :o

DubiousCredentials · 16/09/2016 22:24

Crap is on a par with shit as far as I'm concerned.

dizzygirl1 · 16/09/2016 22:34

In our house crap is a swear word. Am quite happy with that. The kids think long and hard if they hear it. Am expecting lots of swear words coming into the house in the future as they grow so for me it's to make them think about what they are saying plus I don't really like it.

dybil · 16/09/2016 22:37

I've always thought it to be a mild swear word, but it's such an arbitrary distinction I don't know that there's a right answer.

dudsville · 16/09/2016 22:39

I like the word. "Oh crap" is a great expression.

MoosLikeJagger · 16/09/2016 22:39

I am not allowed to say it to the children I teach, therefore it is a swear word.
