I just wonder how long we're going to allow drunken yobs to tie up police resources, ambulance crews and hospital casualty departments. Why can't the government listen to police chiefs and toughen up. I don't know the answer, some police chiefs have said we should have drunk tanks. Whatever happens SOMETHING should be done.

Town centers at weekends are now often like the Wild West a no go area with people who just can't handle their drink, they cost the country fortunes. I just don't understand why it's being allowed to continue. What do you all think?

I live in a huge drinking town (university).

We have buses which provide first line care to 'drunken yobs'. Sick bowls, beds, somewhere safe to go if you get lost, nurses, minor injury care, the use of a phone to call a safe number.

The pubs pay a certain amount towards the running, also there are collection boxes on all the bars. Its funded entirely by the bars/clubs/drinkers. Most people in town have used it on a night out, free water, as a meeting point etc. I don't know why they don't have them everywhere. A&E admissions due to drink on a Fri/Sat night have gone down considerably here.

What exactly would be the solution?

Often that sounds like a great scheme! I live in a big university town as well, and while we don't have as big a problem as some places, there have been a few alcohol related deaths over the years.

I did bar work years ago, and I remember it being drilled into us that we had to cut people off if they were getting too wasted. It was obviously easier where I worked (local pub, as opposed to a nightclub) but there does need to be some sort of uniform limit where people won't get served. A lot easier said then done though.

I doubt the pubs pay the full cost.

Personally I think we should hit them where it hurt, in the pocket. They cost the NHS millions, ambulances that get sent out to town centers to pick up drunks means someone in genuine need might not get one. Why shouldn't they be made to pay at least some of it back.

Boney Probably not much that much - by the time they've had pre drinks at home, they're already on their way to be pissed and I doubt they're buying expensive cocktails or having nice dinners out before hand.

Police are in the town centres because of the nightlife so is someone who goes out and has 1 drink or 0 drinks a "drunken yob" because they are actively affecting the need for police presence?

I agree about ambulances and hospitals, but that's a minority on any given week and not a majority. Also many people 'waste' their time also, over anxious parents, those that have psychosomatic symptoms, or panic attacks( of which I've been done both ) because at the time they felt they've needed it but in actual fact didn't.

It's bad if you feel intimidated to go to your town centre but apart from going on a night out I can't see why you would want/ need to from 10-4am? So I don't see the issue.

Why on earth would I be talking about someone who goes in town and has a couple of drinks. Do you really think there is a massive police presence in town centers because of them? But you really need me to define a "drunken yob"? . Well it's not the ones who go out and have a couple of drinks and then go home that's for sure. But I'm amazed that you don't see any issue with them. They cost the NHS billions of pounds, they attack nursing staff who have to treat them and clean up their vomit and have to put up with being assaulted by them. They also tie up police officers for hours if they have to be arrested thereby taking that officer off the beat. Ambulances get called out to them at £1000 a go. But fine, you don't see any issues with it as long as you are home from town from 10 o'clock. Unbelievable.

I don't think drunken yobs are a separate species tbh. How do you decide who's a drunken yob and who's just had one too many and a dodgy curry/pizza/kebab? I would venture to suggest that many perfectly ordinary people have gone out at the weekend and got bladdered on occasion.

I think you've been reading the wrong newspapers and paying too much attention to what they say to be honest.

Dependent drinkers in their homes and drug overdosers also use ambulance and hospital resources.

But the thing is police are there because the massive presence in my town centre there is one nightclub can hold a couple thousand and several pubs, the police are there to handle the mass amounts of people.
