Handmade gift for christening. AIBU for not doing?

Christening next week for 6mo. Parents have requested handmade gifts for DD.

Clearly they want lots of unique and personalised gifts for their DD, which is lovely. But I'm shit at crafts and also find the request a bit Hmm. If I was to go for it, I really would turn up with something monumentally shit that would get chucked away, and would be a waste of my time and effort.

I suggested to DD's mother, my friend, that I bring something else and she choked through the words 'something shop bought is fine' and 'precious DD has everything she needs'. Clearly it's not.

AIBU to think cheeky, ungrateful fuckers?!

Can you bake? When I'm asked for handmade stuff I usually just bake biscuits and shove them in a favour bag. I'm shit at crafts too.

Go on etsy or similar and buy something that someone else has made. Doesn't say that it has to be handmade by you

I think it's a nice idea- surely hand made could cover everything from some cakes to a poem? Not just crafts. Have you got any friends who could knock something up- - little tote bags are easy to make? When my friend did this for each of her children I wrote them a little story and printed it off. You could always get something 'handmade' from 'not on the high street' I guess.

Could you buy something handmade, from somewhere like etsy? They didn't specify who has to handmake the gift. Obviously it's implied that YOU should, but tbh their request takes the p*ss and you can gift whatever you like.

Bit cheeky of them, tbh.

Hand made can be AMAZING.

We had a very modest wedding and most folk that came were broke.
Our wedding gifts included a set of green plastic chairs from Argos.

  • that kind of thing! All now broken 15 years later.
But a wonderful friend made a beautiful embroidery of the Church. All by hand. A work of art really. I was SO touched. It must have taken her many a winter evening and it has pride of place.

But you cant ASK for that! silly people.

I'd go and buy something at a local craft fair this weekend.
Or do a Blue Peter and get some stickyback plastic, a coathanger and some tinsel Grin

Having said that- what about a mix tape/ cd of lovely somgs that might mean something.
But no- dont take anything because they are rude.

My default christening gift is a set of books from the Book People. Beatrix Potter, Thomas the Tank engine, Winnie the Pooh etc.

I'd make a card, and decorate it badly with crayon. Grin Do you have kids? blame it on them.

Finish it with a bespoke poem.

I think handmade really means handmade.

I don't want to have to lie and pretend something is handmade by me as it's been handmade by an independent seller who runs a small business and should take credit for it.

Maybe I'll bake something. I'm not great but maybe some baby cookies. Still feel a bit resentful at the time and faff to do it.

DailyMail - I agree, you can't ask people to make something special and handmade Hmm

I would love to see the look on friend's smug face when I handover a roughly folded piece of card and set my DD lose with the crayons.
