Handmade gift for christening. AIBU for not doing?

Christening next week for 6mo. Parents have requested handmade gifts for DD.

Clearly they want lots of unique and personalised gifts for their DD, which is lovely. But I'm shit at crafts and also find the request a bit Hmm. If I was to go for it, I really would turn up with something monumentally shit that would get chucked away, and would be a waste of my time and effort.

I suggested to DD's mother, my friend, that I bring something else and she choked through the words 'something shop bought is fine' and 'precious DD has everything she needs'. Clearly it's not.

AIBU to think cheeky, ungrateful fuckers?!

Paint a picture of the family on a huuuuuge canvas.

If you're as bad as painting as me it'll be absolutely hideous.

Then, on the day, act as if you're really proud of it and expect them to hang it in pride of place above the mantelpiece. Ask about it every time you go to their house.

I'll sell you a baby quit for £120. Hand made, hand designed, hand appliqued motifs, all cotton, brand new, never used.

It's the perfect gift. The more it's used the more of an heirloom it becomes.

But, as you can see these things are expensive. The materials cost and even a baby-sized quilt takes a couple of full days to make.

Your friend is being cheeky or is very naive.

Seriously, I like the plant idea. Perhaps a rose bush or something associated with her birth month for the garden.

How about a jar of jam with a ribbon round it. You just have to boil some strawberries and sugar and pour them into a jar. I hear babies like jam.

I do think it's bonkers request though.

BalloonSlayer · 02/09/2016 12:10

You could name a star after the baby.

Say the star was handmade by God Himself so it counts.

What a bloody cheek. On par with the inheritance/cancel the cheque bridezilla.

I'd struggle with this too as I barely have time to make it to tge shops to buy a present let alone hand craft something.

Olympiathequeen · 02/09/2016 12:17

Get something from etsy and blag it.

TaterTots · 02/09/2016 12:17

I'd learn to sew purely to be able to put 'You pretentious cow' on a sampler and give her that.

Ceic · 02/09/2016 12:21

My suggestion is "Baby's First Praise'n'Prayer Drum"

Get any round plastic or metal drum-shaped tub and decorate it with glitter and craft bits'n'bobs. If you can get a clear one, put the decor on the inside, to make it more baby-friendly.

If they would join in the interpretive dance, I can imagine them joining in while their dc drums away.

I make (butcher) handmade gifts on occasion.

I've made:

  • heart gloves. cut a heart out of red material, cut it in half, and sew each half on to the palm of each glove. www.simplesimonandco.com/2016/01/diy-heart-valentine-gloves.html/
  • scrabbleword picture. buy scrabble letters and a box frame. work out how each family members name fits with the other. throw away if they don't.
  • sock bunnies.

DP has made me a memory jar which is basically nice things we've done written on folded post-it notes in a glass jar. Provide parents with jar, ribbon, post-its, and pen.

You could also buy some heart shapes from hobbycraft, glue them onto ribbon and make bunting.

Cagliostro · 02/09/2016 12:26

I'd just assume they were trying to reduce pressure to get something expensive!

But YANBU not to!

fruityb · 02/09/2016 12:27

This thread has had me absolutely in stitches - the particular favourites are the interpretive dance and the snake made of tights!!

Please make a card from crayons.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 02/09/2016 12:36

Dream catcher out of a wire coat hanger, some wool and a few beads? Then cover with PVA glue and a shit load of glitter.

They deserve it for even asking for such wankery.

DailyMailEthicalFail · 02/09/2016 12:36

It IS also ridiculously short notice to make something nice for next week!

manyathingyouknow · 02/09/2016 12:38

Heard it all now.

Draw a stick man, frame it and call it original artwork

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/09/2016 12:47

Fold a newspaper into a boat shape.
www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Paper-Boat

Stick plastic wooden animals into it. Instant homemade Noah's Ark.

Pimmmms · 02/09/2016 12:47

Google for an image of the sky at night or constellations that was taken on or around the child's birth, (you can buy them for a few quid), print it up, get it framed with 'night sky on the date of X's birth' label underneath.

elodie2000 · 02/09/2016 12:52

freerangeeggs OP should definitely go with the HUGE canvas idea! A painting would be nice but a lot of effort don't you think?
How about one of those massive canvas photos of you with their child? Do you have any photos of yourself holding the child OP? They would be thrilled I'm sure of it.

Seriously though, something like this would be very easy to make if they insist on home made tat... (Currently retailing at £23 on well known site)

Do you know any 3 year olds? Wink

HoggyTruffle · 02/09/2016 12:59

Please, please, please buy one of these and report back
cute toy

carrotcakecupcake · 02/09/2016 13:01

Google "rude cross stitch" I'm sure you'll find something appropriate to demonstrate your feelings!

ParadiseCity · 02/09/2016 13:07

That is SO rude.

I'd be tempted to print off a HandMade Book of Manners. Or do the dance with praise drum Grin

Bumpmadethemjump · 02/09/2016 13:07

HoggyTruffle what is thatShock?!
