Handmade gift for christening. AIBU for not doing?

Christening next week for 6mo. Parents have requested handmade gifts for DD.

Clearly they want lots of unique and personalised gifts for their DD, which is lovely. But I'm shit at crafts and also find the request a bit Hmm. If I was to go for it, I really would turn up with something monumentally shit that would get chucked away, and would be a waste of my time and effort.

I suggested to DD's mother, my friend, that I bring something else and she choked through the words 'something shop bought is fine' and 'precious DD has everything she needs'. Clearly it's not.

AIBU to think cheeky, ungrateful fuckers?!

Im really good at crafts. Particularly cross stitching.

I could easily pick up a pattern, some evenweave and threads and stitch the baby a lovely Christening memento to be framed or put in a card.

My issue is the time. That is hours and hours of work, fiddly work at that. If you choose to make something for a child that is one thing but having to wipe out several hours over your weekend doing needle point is a bit too much IMO.

They're fucking wanky. Buy something on Etsy.

Sleepybunny · 02/09/2016 11:25

Shit on a paper plate?

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 02/09/2016 11:25

you could go for this photoframe

Its silly easy to make.

Here's the letters

and here is a frame

Use either white paper or a sheet of patterned card for the backing.

This would do because its not pink Grin

uhu or bostick all purpose to stick the message on.

even the most unskilled non-crafter can put this together.

80sWaistcoat · 02/09/2016 11:25

I love the 21 empty boxes idea....that is pure genius.

swisschocolate · 02/09/2016 11:26

Even better. Nice cardboard gift box (possibly silver). Childs bible in it. 18 white birthday cake candles plus 1 silver one (for confirmation). Printed off note that explains that they need to read a story each year and light a candle of the anniversary of the baptism.

Less than £15. About 10 minute of effort.

Glitter is the gift that keeps giving...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/09/2016 11:31

Lovely if someone is good at crafts and would really like to make something, but to specify handmade, or indeed any sort of present, is very bad manners IMO.

gingerbreadmanm · 02/09/2016 11:31

for my godson i bought a wooden chest from mazon and painted it and stuck lots of crafty things from hobby craft on then filled it with things off google about the day he was born. what songs were popular what was in the news that kind of thing.

the chest is probs a bit too much of a faff but what out the stuff from google?

swisschocolate · 02/09/2016 11:33

Glitter is the gift that keeps giving…

Mix glitter with clear hair gel. Put in a jar. Print off label that says unicorn snot.

I kid you not - £8 a jar in Liberty

MinonsMovie · 02/09/2016 11:33

YANBU. How much where you planing to spend on a gift. Now take off the cost of materials, divide what is left by your hourly rate, add on the time it would take to buy something and that's how much time you can spend on the craft. Grin

gingerbreadmanm · 02/09/2016 11:34

ooh just thought they do these nice pebble pictures nowadays. probs easy found on etsy. i know its not handmade by you but tough ha!

Goingtobeawesome · 02/09/2016 11:35

I'm not sure they mean hand made as in food Confused.

gingerbreadmanm · 02/09/2016 11:36

homemade play doh in kilner type jars. handmade and a dig all in one Grin add glitter for an extra kick.

swisschocolate · 02/09/2016 11:37

Yes. Make pebble people of the entire family.

Nice pebbles and sharpie pen. Write their name on the bottom. Varnish if wanting to push the boat out

Or there is a man who paint chewing gum from pavements

Peppals. I'll be smiling all day imagining that interpretive dance!! With Morris bells ...

ZippyNeedsFeeding · 02/09/2016 11:47

You aren't unreasonable at all, they are cheeky, ungrateful fuckers. With knobs on.
I'd be inclined to give a craft set for her to make with her DD. It's more polite than saying "Fuck off and make your own tat" but I'd feel my point had been made.

Sara107 · 02/09/2016 11:47

Very late notice and I would hate this sort of request. Also, it's nice to have something when you grow up as a momento of your christening.
As an alternative how about buying a charity 'gift' from Oxfam, eg a goat, or a well.
We 'bought' a bit of forest (UK) for our godson, can't remember the details exactly but you could choose from a number of locations ( we got one not too far from where they live) and a specific group of trees is dedicated to the child. So you can visit 'your' forest. Quite expensive though ( and the parents reciprocated with a cheap photo frame for our dD!).

A couple, getting married some years ago were militantly anti-smoking and a friend jokingly had the idea of giving them a No Smoking sign. As the wife to be was Chinese the idea developed into a beautiful framed Chinese sign especially made for them. Couple were delighted! Result!

Handmade although not by the person giving it.

Job done

My local hospital has a stall where they sell lovely handmade baby stuff. It is fund raising for the hospital so a good cause as well.
