To go to A&E or wait for doctor's appointment in a week's time

I am really worried I have ovarian cancer. I have all the symptoms which have been getting worse over the last 2 weeks. Today I have fainted twice (have never fainted before in my life) and have awful stabbing pains low down to one side. I've taken the max painkillers today and am still stooped over. DH says A&E but I think they won't be able to do anything and I just need to wait for a dr's referral.

Any advice please?

If you have fainted twice I would say a and e is appropriate or at the very least getting an emergency appointment . I have no idea about cancer but I would think waiting a week would make things worse whatever the cause.

It's actually more likely that you could have appendicitis - do you have a temperature? Does the pain get worse if you press the area? If appendicitis A&E is absolutely the way to go.

Ring 111 and ask their advice, hopefully they can point you in the right direction. I hope you feel better soon

Acute abdominal pain is an emergency potentially so yes, A&E.

I think A&E is appropriate for such acute pain, but ovarian cancer is pretty unlikely. Isn't it known as a silent killer because it's largely symptomless until it's very advanced?

I think if you've fainted you need medical attention. One sided abdo pain could be a variety of things (trust me, I'm living with it!) including appendicitis, ovarian cyst, kidney stone but it needs investigating. I wouldn't assume it's cancer (most women with ovarian ca report bloated stomach and change in bowel habits first. My Mum had stage 3 and didn't even realise until she went about something else). I don't think you should wait a week. If you're in doubt about going to A&E, call 111.

That said, your symptoms could be caused by a lot of different things, they really don't necessarily mean cancer. Of course, get it checked but don't panic about the worst scenario just yet.

Definitely call 111. NOW. If you had done so earlier they could probably have forced your local GP to see you even if the GP are 'full today.' there might still be an out of hours GP open. There are many different things that could be wrong with you and delaying is incredibly stupid. Mum had cancer 20 years ago. She was given an operation the day after it was recognised. They said that if it had been ignored another month, it would have progressed too far the be cureable. As it is she's now fine. What are you doing??!!

A&e to get checked out. Worse that can happen you sent home...at least you can sleep without worry. Hope you feeling better soon.

I'm feel a bit of a fraud going though. I've felt off for a few months. Change in bowel habits, bloated feeling, off and on bleeding even though I've had no periods for 2 years since having the implant. I just put it down to maybe my implant wearing off although it should have another year left.

I'm overweight and exhausted with 2 toddlers and a carer for 2 elderly relatives, one of whom has recently passed away so I am beyond stressed, tired and anxious. I shall feel so daft if it's all down to just that.

I'm usually a 'no, not A and E' person as there are numerous people on MN who talk nonsense in this regard but I think you should go - abdo pain and fainting twice in a day needs assessing.

Unlikely to be cancer but you should be seen by a medic today.

You are not a fraud, you are in soon and have as much of a right to be cared for as anyone else who is in pain. We all agree with your DH - go to A&E!

Call 111 and they will be able to get you an appointment with n OoH doctor today, no guilt of an A&E visit required, and no long waiting in A&E either.

Pirate I went to my GP with abdo pain ?cause expecting them to say it's an infection or something but they admitted me! They don't mess around because it could be a variety of things. Call 111 and get seen - tonight!

I'd phone 111 as a minimum.

I've also had all the symptoms for a long time but the GP told me I'd be a lot more poorly if I had it. Sadly the same surgery saw a lady 17 times and she had it and died. I've had a scan and I'm okay. Consultant thinks bowel stuff rather than gynea.

I know your post says you have the implant, but have you done a pregnancy test or considered an ectopic pregnancy? A lot of your symptoms match against the symptoms of an ectopic. I would at least contact 111 or OOH.

Good lord! They want to send an ambulance! I've told them that's impossible as I'm alone with 2 children and my husband isn't back until 10pm. I feel very daft now as no way do I feel bad enough to get an ambulance.

Can a friend or neighbour stay with your do? Just for a couple of hours until DH is home?

Just scoop them up and take them with you.
You clearly need to be seen by a doctor. It's not ideal but only an hour.

Is there anyone who could come and look after your little ones?
