To be annoyed with people thinking flapjack is healthy?

It's not btw. You might as well eat sugar straight out of the bowl.

Flapjack isn't a healthy snack. It's a very nice treat or pudding. Just because it has oats in doesn't magically take away the sugar and the golden syrup crap. Stop giving it to your dc thinking it's better then cake. It's not.

Most flapjack is made by melting a block of butter, mixing in sugar adding oats and then a ton of golden syrup. The oats do not make it healthy. Making it at home so you can call it homemade doesn't make it healthy.

I'm really surprised how many MNetters think it's a good healthy snack to give to their dc. Rant over.

Why do you care? Just get on with your life and let others get on with theirs

Hassled · 20/06/2016 20:32

I'm under no illusions that it's a healthy snack. It is, however, a very nice snack.

longdiling · 20/06/2016 20:32

I'm with Derek. And I don't think I've ever seen it touted on here as a healthy snack?!

ShelaghTurner · 20/06/2016 20:32

I'm sorry this has blighted your life so much. Have a sit down.

enjoyingscience · 20/06/2016 20:33

Is it wrong that I really fancy making flapjacks now?

PurpleDaisies · 20/06/2016 20:33

It isn't healthy. So what?

HoneyDragon · 20/06/2016 20:33

Bounty's are still health food though, right?

Owllady · 20/06/2016 20:33

Oh come on, it's just like a carrot

If no one cared about what others did or didn't do there wouldn't be a mumsnet.

A few years ago MN was the lunchbox police. Now it's the complete opposite and every food thread about healthy snacks flapjack gets trotted out. It annoys me.

I'm not sure honey but carrot cake definitely is...

rumbelina · 20/06/2016 20:34

It's better than a mars bar

321zerobaby · 20/06/2016 20:34

And chocolate orange is one of your five a day too, isn't it?

PurpleDaisies · 20/06/2016 20:34

Mars bar flap jack is really nice.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/06/2016 20:34

They are yummy though.

and perfectly fine as part of a balanced diet.

Queenbean · 20/06/2016 20:34

Ok then, you're right

Fwiw I always feed my children a crisp salad (3-4 different flavoured crisps all mixed up) or a pork pie as a healthy snack

SpecialSnowflake · 20/06/2016 20:35

If the quantity of sugars are the same, then yes it would be healthier than cake - refined white flour vs whole oats.
However I imagine there is probably more sugar in a flapjack than most homemade cakes.

BrandNewAndImproved · 20/06/2016 20:35

I'm obviously being U then.

If AIBU had been petty gripes my op would have fitted.

Fairylea · 20/06/2016 20:35

It's not a healthy snack but if we are being picky it is better than cake in that the oats release sugar more gradually so you feel fuller for longer. That's about it really.

But I can't get upset about it, I have a son with severe autism who has the most restrictive diet ever and lives on ice lollies, bread and the occasional bit of cheese. He has a dietitian prescribed supplement, we've seen every specialist there is.

A snack now and then never killed anyone, flapjack or not. Grin

Owllady · 20/06/2016 20:36

All these mumsnetters trotting about

doceodocere · 20/06/2016 20:36

My kids make sugar free flapjacks, for their lunchboxes, originally a baby led weaning recipe but they still like them

Is that ok with you?

Balletgirlmum · 20/06/2016 20:36

It might not be healthy but for my active sporty/dancy children the oats are a good source of energy & better than a chocolate bar.

OooLookShoes · 20/06/2016 20:36

Omfg.

What is this mars bar flapjack of which you speak...

KoalaDownUnder · 20/06/2016 20:36

Actual lol at 'crisp salad' Grin
