To be annoyed with people thinking flapjack is healthy?

It's not btw. You might as well eat sugar straight out of the bowl.

Flapjack isn't a healthy snack. It's a very nice treat or pudding. Just because it has oats in doesn't magically take away the sugar and the golden syrup crap. Stop giving it to your dc thinking it's better then cake. It's not.

Most flapjack is made by melting a block of butter, mixing in sugar adding oats and then a ton of golden syrup. The oats do not make it healthy. Making it at home so you can call it homemade doesn't make it healthy.

I'm really surprised how many MNetters think it's a good healthy snack to give to their dc. Rant over.

Personal!y I like a bit of flap after some afternoon delight

Mimicat44 · 20/06/2016 20:49

No, YANBU, flapjack is a cake. It's like those 'breakfast biscuits' - my colleague has those every day and I tell him he might as well just buy a packet of hobnobs and have those for breakfast, it's exactly the same.

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1148640/yummy-golden-syrup-flapjacks

That's the base recipe-I usually add a couple of handfuls of chocolate chips/nuts/dried fruit but chopped up Mars bar is the best. I'm thinking rolo might work well too.

Guess who's making flapjack this week?! Thanks op!

BrandNewAndImproved · 20/06/2016 20:51

Yey YY I have a lone fellow friend Mimicat.

Jeez those Helmsley sisters must spend half their life in the lavatory

Xmasbaby11 · 20/06/2016 20:52

I know what's in it. I don't consider it a health food but because of the oats I believe it's healthier than biscuits, cakes or chocolate.

PerpendicularVincent · 20/06/2016 20:52

I've never seen anyone on here say that flapjacks are healthy. But realistically, I wouldn't get stressed about what a bunch of randoms on the Internet do or do not feed their children.

CatsGoPurrrr · 20/06/2016 20:53

I put dried fruit in mine. That makes them healthy, yes? Smile

BrandNewAndImproved · 20/06/2016 20:54

Well we can say that about anything on MN per.

Why does MN care that someone parks in a mother and baby space? Why does MN care of someone smokes in their own garden? MN is full of crap that people don't need to care about.

omfg I didn't realise I was having regular crisp salads until now. I like my crisp salad to contain: cheese balls, cheese kettle chips and salt n vinegar chipsticks. On special occasions I add M&S sour cream and jalapeno combo mix.

No dressing though... best that way. although dipping salt and vinegar kettle crisps into mango chutney is sublime

Lighteningirll · 20/06/2016 20:56

Belvita they are a bloody biscuit NOT breakfast. I put dried apricots in my flapjacks I make them every week for dh to take to work now I know why I'm fat I also put suit loads of sugar, but it's brown natch and golden syrup which is practically a superfood and I can't believe it's not butter oh wait yes I really can believe it's not butter.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 20/06/2016 20:56

Olivia on The Waltons used to make 'flapjacks' but they were flat, round and involved a frying pan and an apron.

What was that about? Or do American's just call something else flapjack like the jam/jelly debacle?

Tiredofsummer · 20/06/2016 20:57

After reading this thread I'm now eating a flapjack ffs I know they're not healthy and I'm on a strict diet but this thread has made me want one Sad

To be annoyed with people thinking flapjack is healthy?
trulybadlydeeply · 20/06/2016 20:58

I just replace the sugar, syrup and butter with some cauliflower, kale and avocado. You can't taste the difference and so yes OP, my flapjack is a healthy snack.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 20/06/2016 20:58

Tiredofsummer it's kind of small.

And where are the chocolate chips??

You're doing flapjack wrong...

Armi · 20/06/2016 21:01

Flapjack is shockingly unhealthy, so what I suggest is that you all send your horrible flapjacks to me for safe disposal.

snowgirl29 · 20/06/2016 21:01

Honey works just as well as golden syrup with flapjacks. Still you've got the half a pack of butter but the calories evaporate when it's melted right? Wink

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 20/06/2016 21:01

One of my kids bought a packet of flapjacks from a market, yesterday. Marked into 4 portions. All gone by the time we got to the car.

He's growing like a weed, mind, bless him.

Armi · 20/06/2016 21:01

*under, not until!

Mimicat44 · 20/06/2016 21:02

BrandNew ditto for most breakfast cereals. I'm not saying don't eat them but just don't kid yourself that they're healthy just because they're marketed that way. Can't believe still so many people saying 'but flapjack is still healthier because of the oats' - NO, NO THEY'RE NOT. I have to say though, the above recipe for crisp salad sounds utterly divine.

Tiredofsummer · 20/06/2016 21:03

They're my ds dairy free ones but they're lovely and ive allready eaten most of it. Blush

PerpendicularVincent · 20/06/2016 21:03

It's a good point Brand, a fair number of aibu threads are about random crap. I don't care about any of those things either Grin

snowgirl29 · 20/06/2016 21:03
