To be annoyed with people thinking flapjack is healthy?

It's not btw. You might as well eat sugar straight out of the bowl.

Flapjack isn't a healthy snack. It's a very nice treat or pudding. Just because it has oats in doesn't magically take away the sugar and the golden syrup crap. Stop giving it to your dc thinking it's better then cake. It's not.

Most flapjack is made by melting a block of butter, mixing in sugar adding oats and then a ton of golden syrup. The oats do not make it healthy. Making it at home so you can call it homemade doesn't make it healthy.

I'm really surprised how many MNetters think it's a good healthy snack to give to their dc. Rant over.

I am sure most people have heard of the GI.

Golden syrup is very high GI. It is just sugar. Butter is not, but it is very high in calories.

The slow-release energy of the oats doesn't negate the fact that a) flapjack is still a calorie-dense food, and b) if you treat it as if it is not, it can still make you fat.

Why would anyone ruin a flapjack with body nuts and fruit?

StealthPolarBear · 20/06/2016 21:48

Yuk at body nuts

*I'm obviously being U then.

If AIBU had been petty gripes my op would have fitted*

Do we have a petty gripes topic on MN?

Balletgirlmum · 20/06/2016 21:49

But many of us are talking about giving them to our very active children.

What are "body nuts"? My mind is boggling....

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/06/2016 21:52

I love the Nigella cereal bar. But no-one else in my house does because of the seeds so I have to eat it all and it's not EXACTLY a health food Sad

Let me know how your cheese and onion flavoured flapjacks get on

Queen - I was thinking of branching out into Monster Munch :)

Iwantagoonthetrampoline · 20/06/2016 21:59

Who cares about flapjacks - crisp salad! My god I need to try this. On investigation I only have cheese & onion walkers & pom bears in my cupboard. Can I add dry roasted peanuts or mini chedders to the mix or is that a bit wrong? And please no one start on about how pom bears are not a healthy snack either.

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 20/06/2016 22:00

My flap jack is rubbish..
I know because no one likes it and it doesn't last very long...

Acornantics · 20/06/2016 22:01

I love flapjack. It's awesome. And sweet, and sugary, and syrupy, and oaty, and fruity and nutty and delicious. Is it an apple? Nope. Is it going to feature heavily in my family's life forever? Yes.

It does taste nice but you know it's packed full of calories so you just don't eat many

In theory...

BrandNewAndImproved · 20/06/2016 22:04

The syrup and sugar completely negate the oats slow release. Oats don't make sugar magically healthy.

If you want to kid yourself then that's fine. Children do need calories, full fat stuff and good food. Flapjack has its place but just because your dc are active doesn't make flapjack healthy.

Oats are not magic.

Flapjacks had a really 'healthy' reputation about 15-20 years ago when sunflower oil, high-fibre and oats were in and nobody cared too much about the sugar content.

As for 5-a-day, I nominate Cadbury's Fruit & Nut. Raisins have vitamins in them and nuts have all sorts of good fats and minerals in them don't they? Wink

And I would be annoyed if someone confiscated a flapjack from DS's lunchbox because they said it was unhealthy.

I'd bet the teacher was a flapjack fan and had forgotten their lunch...

snowgirl29 · 20/06/2016 22:11

No one wants to ruin a flapjack with body nuts OP Grin

MoonlightandMusic · 20/06/2016 22:12

YABU, but, if you are going to be unhealthy then SoupDragon's recipe (at 09:55am on the thread) will allow you to do so in style! Grin
