I am in a right pickle!

A month ago I was driving back home from town and my front left wheel went in a massive pot hole that I couldn't miss (oncoming traffic meant I couldn't swerve round it as it stretched out into the road).

The wheel went in the hole with a massive bang and the front suspension cracked. I managed to limp the car home (DH and DCs all with me) and found that the top mount had shattered. I stupidly called my insurance because not only did it damage my car, but it also did something to my already damaged spine - the pain in my left shoulder and hand is the worst I've experienced in 8 years since I was attacked). Anyway, the insurance company took the car, told me it was a write-off and sent me the money for it, less the excess. The excess however, was £650 which meant the cheque for the balance is way under £1000. I can't find a 7 seater car for under £1000 for love nor money so we are stuck in our village. The school is in the village so we're ok getting to school, but we cannot go anywhere as a family, 2 of us have to stay at home (I borrowed a 5 seater to get DH to work).

The insurance company said I will have a good chance of recovery because there was a red line round the massive hole and the fact, 4 weeks on, it still has not been filled in. But they just don't know when that will be settled.

WIBU to do a justgiving page to help raise money to get a new car under the circumstances? I suppose, if you don't ask, you don't get, but would people really help us?

When I get the money back from the insurance company, I would donate any donated money back to charity of course, because it would be better for someone more in need to have it..... a kinda pass-it-on.....

What do you think (and be kind - I haven't done it yet)

How long before the Daily Mail pick this up?

Im starting to think its them that start most threads these days

I think you mean crowdfunding.

To be honest what have you got to lose? As long as you are honest about how much you want and why I can't see a problem.

I would never give money to any crowdfunder whether it was to help a dying child or pay for someone's wedding. No one is forced to donate or even read crowdfunding sites so if you got donations presumably they would be from people who want to give.

Gingernut81 · 13/06/2016 19:54

Wowsers, people don't give up on here do they! FWIW OP said she borrowed a car, she doesn't own another. She's also said she's not going to do yet you keep on having a go at her! Talk about kicking someone when they're down!

"the pain in my left shoulder and hand is the worst I've experienced in 8 years since I was attacked"

Just noticed this. Sorry OP. Must be really hard for you right now.

No advice. Just a bit of sympathy. Flowers

I wouldn't donate to a family getting a car when I can't afford to buy myself a second hand car.

I think crowdfunding would be more what you would need to set up though,

Cutecat78 · 13/06/2016 20:23

Am sorry to hear about your situation OP.

I have had to scrap my car and borrow money from family.

I would not set up a page. I had a friend who did this (who had no kids and a good job) to help pay her 15 yr old cats vets bills.

She went down in my estimation a bit TBH.

My husband has MS and could do with an electric wheelchair that we cant afford as we have a car, but we can only go out in that, he can't go anywhere we can't park outside. Shall I set up a page too??

LetZygonsbeZygones · 05/08/2017 22:30

Seems rather shameless somehow. My car is a beaten up 11 year wreck. Im praying it will scrape through its mot this month because I can't afford repairs. I am on a low income due to a genetic condition that means I can't bloody work, I am divorced, in a crappy HA flat and life is tough. Would I start a go fund me page? No. Because I can get buy, I just cant afford many things I'd like and need without a major struggle. But there will be many people in a similar situation. Should we all start go fund me pages? The site would be swamped if everyone for who life was a financial struggle, set one up.
