I am in a right pickle!

A month ago I was driving back home from town and my front left wheel went in a massive pot hole that I couldn't miss (oncoming traffic meant I couldn't swerve round it as it stretched out into the road).

The wheel went in the hole with a massive bang and the front suspension cracked. I managed to limp the car home (DH and DCs all with me) and found that the top mount had shattered. I stupidly called my insurance because not only did it damage my car, but it also did something to my already damaged spine - the pain in my left shoulder and hand is the worst I've experienced in 8 years since I was attacked). Anyway, the insurance company took the car, told me it was a write-off and sent me the money for it, less the excess. The excess however, was £650 which meant the cheque for the balance is way under £1000. I can't find a 7 seater car for under £1000 for love nor money so we are stuck in our village. The school is in the village so we're ok getting to school, but we cannot go anywhere as a family, 2 of us have to stay at home (I borrowed a 5 seater to get DH to work).

The insurance company said I will have a good chance of recovery because there was a red line round the massive hole and the fact, 4 weeks on, it still has not been filled in. But they just don't know when that will be settled.

WIBU to do a justgiving page to help raise money to get a new car under the circumstances? I suppose, if you don't ask, you don't get, but would people really help us?

When I get the money back from the insurance company, I would donate any donated money back to charity of course, because it would be better for someone more in need to have it..... a kinda pass-it-on.....

What do you think (and be kind - I haven't done it yet)

I'm still waiting for an insurance claim to be settled after 15 months, and according to my insurers it isn't rare. I'm not out of pocket because I was fully comp, but they haven't recovered the money from the other (at fault) party. I do think you need to start saving and not rely on getting a bigger pay-out in the neat future.

Is begging online the way to do it? Probably not.

Is there nobody who would lend you the cash? Someone very close? I think asking one person, who you have that kind of relationship with (parent, sibling, etc) is okay.

IceRoadDucker · 13/06/2016 15:28

*near future. Though a pay out would be neat!

Sunnsoo · 13/06/2016 15:32

Do you have any family who could loan you the money until your situation gets better?

MardyGrave · 13/06/2016 15:34

£650 is a very high excess, did you choose that?

DreamInterrupted · 13/06/2016 15:35

People in a needy position are those who need life saving medical treatment or have lost their homes because of floods/earthquakes not a new car.

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 13/06/2016 15:35

I wouldn't donate if I sae this.

I have ended up in an unexpected out of pocket with no car situation due to a car accident and insurance payout. I explained to a friend who has more available cash than I, bought a car, then gave them the insurance money when it came through, having already discussed that there would be a shortfall that I wouldn't be in a position to pay.

Do you know any individual you could ask rather than just the general public?

HopeClearwater · 13/06/2016 15:37

Get your claim dealt with by your insurers' solicitors, tell them you want to pursue a legal claim for all your losses including personal injury, go to the doctor's if you haven't already, keep details of all extra expenditure that you've incurred because of this accident and keep a diary if your symptoms. Forget JustGiving, you need to do this through the legal channels which are there for a reason.

FrikkaDilla · 13/06/2016 15:37

Wow, have people no scruples anymore. This is like begging OP. How embarrassing to even contemplate something like this.

TheFairyCaravan · 13/06/2016 15:38

There's loads of 7seaters on Autotrader for less than £1000

SuperFlyHigh · 13/06/2016 15:39

Nope wouldn't donate and yes would think you are grabby.

it's a bit different eg to a childhood friend of mine and his mum (SP) who lost all their belongings and the child was badly burned and hospitalised. That's what Just giving etc is for.

Pinkheart5915 · 13/06/2016 15:39

I wouldn't donate so somebody could buy a new car

SuperFlyHigh · 13/06/2016 15:40

oh and you asked if you were BU. so if you ask you should expect answers you do and don't like.

IcyTeaAndScoopyScoopyDogDog · 13/06/2016 15:41

Honestly OP, I hear ya. A shitty situation makes people desperate. I desperately need to get my teeth fixed. It consumes and affects my life every day but it will cost about 10 grand here in Ireland . In my darkest hours, I think I could set up a page and ask for help but its silly to think I would get it.

You shouldn't do it but I understand why you want to.

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 13/06/2016 15:42

Your insurance claim might take a long time. Have you asked your insurance company if they could release an interim payment to you?

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 13/06/2016 15:42

Don't use just giving for this. Just giving is for charity. You are not a charity.

If you want to raise funds for a car via crowdfunding try - GoFundMe www.gofundme.com/ you will have to promote it though and articulate why you need a car so badly. and the chance of it not meeting the target is very high.

If you want a loan try peer to peer lending - www.lendingworks.co.uk/ often more affordable than a bank or doorstop lender. Once the insurance comes through you can pay it back.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 13/06/2016 15:51

Why a seven seater? That would be beyond the means of a lot of people I'm sure and not generate much sypathy that you couldn't afford one - to be blunt.

HiddenMeaning · 13/06/2016 15:58

If you have damaged your spine then i imagine that days out with the DC aren't top of your priorities anyhow.

So your DH could take the kids somewhere while you and the newborn stay home? That doesn't sound of bad. The kids would get a trip out and you would get some peace and quiet and rest your back.

Witchend · 13/06/2016 16:01

As a rule of thumb, if you wouldn't stand on a street corner begging for money for your cause then you look grabby putting it on just giving.
When it's for yourself it's just a modern way of begging.
To be fair the charity ones are just an alternative to chugging.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 13/06/2016 16:04

I gave a small amount yesterday for a little girl who will die unless she goes to America for treatment. As soon as I donated, another 10 causes popped up, all children who need life-saving treatment............and you want a new car? Shock

londonrach · 13/06/2016 16:08

Op sounds like you having a bad time of it. However alot of people go through bad times. in our local town for example a family house burnt down and the family lost everything bar the pjs they escaped in. I think they sadly lost their family pets (small furries) too but children and parents were ok. The offers of clothes, toys, furniture and food have been flooding in for them as has an offer of a house until their house is sorted. Op thats whats justgiving is for (although this family didnt set a page up). Yes its harder if you rural without a car but a car is a luxury and where i live something alot of people dont have as simply they cant afford it. In the meantime if you need shopping etc can you use a taxi as if not insuring, running costs, buying petrol etc the money you save on that can be used for taxis. Can a family member lend you some money in short term. Any chance of a bank loan? Just ideas op. Hope you get it sorted!

PolaroidsFromTheBeyond · 13/06/2016 16:09

Can you get a 0% credit card to get the car and pay the balance off over a few months?

Abraiid1 · 13/06/2016 16:09

No. I wouldn't give.

A relative set up a justgiving for a pet who'd been in an awful accident. His insurance didn't cover the full amount. We gave some money for the poor creature to have the operation it needed. They own three properties. Ok, you can't speedily liquidate assets in property in an emergency.

But since then I have seen them on FB on expensive holidays, going to concerts, etc. it did surprise me. Perhaps they will offer money to others in the future and it's paid forward somehow.

BlueLeopard · 13/06/2016 16:12

Why don't you just get a bank loan for your car like everybody else?

And another question: if you did set up this page, and you did get enough money for a car, what would you do with the compensation claim money you get from the council? Would you donate it onwards too?

Walking two miles on a bad narrow road to catch a bus is the norm here in Ireland, especially in rural areas. Young, old, newborn all do it. We tend to have more potholes, and more rain too.

MotherOfBleach · 13/06/2016 16:16

As others have said you can do whatever you want, but honestly, as a singl working mother, who struggles to put food on the table for my kids, let alone fund running a car, I would be insulted if this popped up on my Facebook.

I regularly walked two miles with a newborn. Having no car it was kinda neccessary and not at all difficult.

You need to be thankful for what you have and stop focusing on what you don't have.
