To think fake grass is not tacky

At the Doctors with dd about eczema, GP says it can be triggered by pollen, grass seed etc and asks if she's been in the garden a lot with the nice weather. I say 'yes but we've got fake grass'. GP rolls his eyes, laughs and says 'fake grass?! Like Wayne Rooney? Goodness me!'

I have no idea if Wayne Rooney has fake grass or not and I'm not in the least bit offended by the GP (I think he was trying to be funny) but it got me thinking....does fake grass in my garden make me a wannabe WAG?

I'd love fake grass. Low maintenance and no bloody sneezing fits every time I go to hang washing out!

My friend recently replaced her lawn with fake turf. It looks great! YANBU.

House near us has been done up. House painted, gravel drive, bit of landscaping and small (fake) lawn. It looks fantastic all year.

I love the idea & wish we could afford to have it done.

I expect it looks nice but it's not the same as having living plants under you feet is it? It seems a bit sterile to me. And what's going on in the soil underneath it? Just seems odd so I wouldn't have it. I do have lentil weavin tendencies though

If the expensive stuff and well fitted it looks great for small lawns.

I know this is becoming really popular but I think it's ridiculous.

Each to their own...fake does look fake. It is just an outside carpet but if you have allergies and dont mind the look why not.. Do you hover it?

It looks good (not tacky IMO) but nothing beats the feel of real grass on bare feet on a sunny morning!

The show home on the new build estate I live on had a beautifully landscaped garden, all planted up, perfect lawn, gorgeous.

The people that have moved in ripped up the lawn and replaced it with astro turf, pulled all the flowers and plants up and replaced them with plastic ones and have erected a plastic, light up willow tree in the front garden.

THAT'S tacky. A bit of Astro turf doesn't sound so bad by comparison.

Next time you make an appointment ask for a doctor who isn't a snob.

I think it's tacky and environmentally unfriendly to replace living plants with fake ones.

How rude! You will get some people turning their nose up, like with fake Christmas trees. The older I get the less I can tolerate petty digs at other people's choices. We have thought about it because our lawn is a mess - dogs fault mainly, so it would look better and be more practical. You can't tell with modern stuff until really up close.

londonrach I don't Hoover it but next door hoovered theirs the other day and I thought it was a good idea! Ours just gets jet washed when we do the patio. We do have a veg patch in a raised bed and most of the garden is patio so this is just a small 'soft underfoot area' for dd to play on really, avoids mud and no mowing!

My friends have fake grass. It looks great. So much so when we do our garden we're getting it!

Due to our real grass constantly dying because of leatherjackets(?) we replaced our grass with artificial turf. It actually looks alright, and I do go out and hoover it... The quality really varies, we went for a mid prices one. A friend has replaced her lawn with actual old school AstroTurf - like the covering of a tennis ball!

The Telegraph approves, so it can't be that bad! And the main company that installs it in London has won several awards at the Chelsea Flower Show so on that basis, it can't be tacky

I love ours. Yes it looks a bit too green in the middle of winter but it is a small price to pay for a garden that is usable all year round, and never having mud trampled through the house

It is naff though. It looks like you want a lawn but are too precious to deal with the outdoors. Although I kind of get the dogs and play areas argument though. Er and shady areas. You'll still have to keep it free of weeds and clean it though.

My neighbours had it put in a few years ago. They're getting older and arthritis makes it hard to mow lawns by themselves and they no longer need to pay someonevto do it for them weekly. The rest of the garden just needs intermittent maintenance a few time a year and is a pleasure to look at.

My back lawn I'd keep real, but it would be better than the real thing on my deeply shaded small patch of front garden where its a palaver to get the mower to and around to cut the scraggy thin grass.

It has its uses.

I'm considering it, it's either that, or I'll have to pave over my small back garden.

I've got Old Rose suckers and bramble constantly ruining anything that I try to do.

I'm away a lot and can't do the maintenance and weeding/watering that a garden, with problems, needs.

It is means that a child with Asthma can enjoy their garden, then it's a no brainier.

I would balance it out by planting regionally native flowers/plants/shrubs, in pots, though.

How horrible. I can guarantee there will be something you've chosen - furniture, garment, picture, whatever - that prompts exactly the same reaction.
