To think fake grass is not tacky

At the Doctors with dd about eczema, GP says it can be triggered by pollen, grass seed etc and asks if she's been in the garden a lot with the nice weather. I say 'yes but we've got fake grass'. GP rolls his eyes, laughs and says 'fake grass?! Like Wayne Rooney? Goodness me!'

I have no idea if Wayne Rooney has fake grass or not and I'm not in the least bit offended by the GP (I think he was trying to be funny) but it got me thinking....does fake grass in my garden make me a wannabe WAG?

I don't like it but I think it should be called grassette.
(Like leatherette and suedette)

spanieleyes · 11/06/2016 10:55

I have a 3 foot wide strip between a fence and the kitchen wall with a glass door opening on to it, no sunlight ever finds its way in, fenced off at both ends ( and only 5 foot long!) and never used. So I have fake grass, fake flowers, a bright blue painted fence and metal wall ornaments! Very tacky but I love it!

todayitstarts · 11/06/2016 10:55

It is tacky, sorry. But I like plants and gardens not a big green carpet. Dogs pooing on it is gross - you may as well let them shit inside and then clean that up.

PaintedDrivesAndPolishedGrass · 11/06/2016 10:58

Unless your garden is hermetically sealed it makes no difference if you have real or artificial grass regarding allergies. Pollens and spores are airborne.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 11/06/2016 10:59

Dubious taste. Sad. Tacky?

How about a practical solution to a boggy garden?

MeAndMy3LovelyBoys · 11/06/2016 11:00

I think it looks great!

Can weeds pop through it though or will they die underneath it due to lack of sunlight?

FoggyBottom · 11/06/2016 11:01

YABU

Fake grass in a domestic garden is utterly tacky. If you don't want the bother of real grass then replace it with something else that's real, such as stone paving (but not concrete, that's just lazy).

MumOnACornishFarm · 11/06/2016 11:03

Maybe a bog garden is a better solution to a boggy garden.

AliceThrewTheFookingGlass · 11/06/2016 11:04

Dogs pooing on it is gross - you may as well let them shit inside and then clean that up.

Surely there's no real difference of dog shit on artificial grass vs dog shit on real grass? Its not like real grass instantly absorbs the shit.

shrunkenhead · 11/06/2016 11:04

You know it's tacky. How on earth do you clean it? Esp after a pp mentioned animal faeces etc (you can't hoover them up) and what is happening underneath it?! Yes, in kids' play areas in parks etc it's a pissible safety precaution but not in your own garden. It's only marginally better than concrete...

shrunkenhead · 11/06/2016 11:06

Possible not pissible!

justbogoff · 11/06/2016 11:08

Yes it's tacky, but each to their own.

(I personally don't like decking either, and don't get me started on decking with a hot tub).

Pinkheart5915 · 11/06/2016 11:09

I do think fake grass is tacky

todayitstarts · 11/06/2016 11:12

The is a difference, one is organic and part of the natural ecosystem and one is plastic.

We will be climbing fake Munroes next. Or maybe should just stay inside and use a sunbed and UV lights to ward off Vit D deficiency Grin

user7755 · 11/06/2016 11:14

I think it is tacky, personally but each to their own. The doctor was rude though.

Mud and 'weeds' are nicer than plastic grass. Only Wimbledon needs to look perfect, not a real life back garden.

What about the bees? They need dabs of mud to build their little nests. They won't get that from plastic grass.

SirChenjin · 11/06/2016 11:25

Yes it's tacky - but I bloody wish I had some. Fed up of raking up leaves, reseeding it and mowing the thing.

Marmalade85 · 11/06/2016 11:28

YABU fake grass is tacky

Dizzydodo · 11/06/2016 12:29

Seems like I'll have to accept I'm a bit tacky Grin I do think plastic trees (except Christmas trees) are a step too far though.

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 11/06/2016 13:16

Yes it's tacky. Of course it is, it's a fake thing simulating a real thing. And I think it's depressing that humans continue to choose to alienate themselves from nature even further.

BUT, it works for your circumstances and each to his own I guess.

thecatfromjapan · 11/06/2016 13:29

I'm in the 'It's bad for wildlife' camp. I think humans are not considerate enough of other beings' right to live. This makes me sad.Sad
I get that it seems such a small, individual choice but so many humans constantly make small (and large) choices that end up making the earth uninhabitable for other life-forms.
It's just very, very wrong.

MumOnACornishFarm · 11/06/2016 13:41

Plastic Christmas trees are tacky too though, IMO. Especially those white shimmery 'frosted' ones. Do people still have those? Anything that should be natural but is instead made from plastic (plastic flowers, plants, faux wood effect anything, etc.) is tacky in my book.

KateLivesInEngland · 11/06/2016 13:49

Haven't RTFT
my sil has fake grass and I'm jealous! I'd have it but our lawn size means it'd be quite £££.
It looks fine, not fake at all. If you were stood in the kitchen looking out on to it, you can't tell. If they keep up with brushing it it looks better than grass! I'd have it.

randomcatname · 11/06/2016 14:18

I hate it. Think the gp was referring to the hair on Rooney's head rather than casting aspersions, however.
