to think British chocolate

Is just crap compared to Swiss or German chocolate?

I try kitkats and twix and celebrations. They're just so crummy and un-chocolate-y compared to Lindt, Ritter Sport and other chocolates in Europe.

We're being fobbed off with rubbish chocolate.

It's never as bad as Hershey's though. That actually tastes like bile.

YABU. Swiss choc is sickly.

English, well Bournville, if we're going for exact location, is the best. Cadburys cannot be beaten.

RedOnHerHedd · 18/02/2016 00:08

Cadburys used to be the best but it's shit now.

I agree Lindt is amazing chocolate! Galaxy is pretty good, but the worst chocolate by far is what they serve up in America. They have no idea how shit their chocolate tastes!

VimFuego101 · 18/02/2016 00:14

YANBU - but English chocolate tastes like heaven compared to American stuff, so think yourself lucky Smile

AnnieOnnieMouse · 18/02/2016 00:15

Aldi chocolate is excellent; British stuff is vile - all milk and sugar

Butttons · 18/02/2016 00:18

Swiss chocolate is lovely. Milka mmmmmmm

Terribleknitter · 18/02/2016 00:27

Milka is heaven ChocolateChocolate
I like most British chocolate and complain about some of it, but then I think back to my unfortunate encounter with Pumpkin Spice flavoured Hershey's Kisses and thank whatever God might be listening that most of my chocolate is British GrinGrin

BackforGood · 18/02/2016 00:28

Before Kraft took over, I'd have been totally disagreeing with you. Cadbury's used to be the best. It ^used to be lovely. Sadly, no more Sad

Have to agree. I'm in the States so any Cadbury's on sale here is actually manufactured by Hershey's under license and it's AWFUL!!!!! What's worse is that some ridiculous law allows Hershey's to restrict imports of real Cadbury's so I can't even get my favorite things imported from the UK at my English grocery store anymore.

www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-31120182

I can get Lindt however and I console myself regularly with it and actually Trader Joe's makes a pretty decent giant milk chocolate bar.

to think British chocolate
Charlesroi · 18/02/2016 00:56

Sadly, YANBU. Cadbury's has turned into a greasy mess.

We buy Milka and the "posh" Lidl choc now.

NinjaLeprechaun · 18/02/2016 01:00

"the worst chocolate by far is what they serve up in America. They have no idea how shit their chocolate tastes!"
Somebody must know something, because Lindt sells well. Actually, as long as you avoid Hershey's, good chocolate isn't that hard to find. Trader Joe's store brand is surprisingly good (At least some of it is made in Ireland.)

"It might be so the Hershey's can survive being transported through deserts at 120 F or through Florida at 98F and 98% humidity."
If only somebody would invent a refrigerated transport device capable of keeping food cold for long periods of time.
It might have to do with "shelf stability" but I don't imagine it's for shipping.

NinjaLeprechaun · 18/02/2016 01:02

rainbunny Obviously we crossposted. I just ordered some horrifically overpriced Flakes from Amazon, so somebody is importing them. At least I hope so - if they get stopped at Customs I'll be beyond pissed.

nattyknitter · 18/02/2016 01:17

I used to be quite partial to the giant dirt cheap slabs of Migros own chocolate when I lived in Switzerland. When I lived in France, I used to get care packages of Galaxy and Cadbury's sent out. I was devastated when I came home and Cadbury's had changed, so now I refuse to buy it.

I au paired many moons ago in Austria and used to visit a town that had a Milka factory and the whole place smelt like heaven.

I'm buying the milk and hazlenut bars in Ikea at the moment and I am quite happy with them.

Osquito · 18/02/2016 01:23

I can't stand most European mainstream chocolate bars because they seem really sweet. However, they do seem to have a wider range of fillings or flavours, which I miss.
I think Australian/NZ Cadburys is the best! The stuff made in Malaysia is horrible, similar to Hershey's.

Qwebec · 18/02/2016 01:35

There is worse than hershey's:
those cheap little chocolate eggs: they taste like the alluminium foils they are wrapped in.
those: www.chockies.net/WebRoot/StoreLFR/Shops/62049378/52FF/895D/8995/9CFF/71A9/C0A8/2BB9/4D8F/oeufs-chocolat-vrac_m.png

they cost 1$ for a bag of 15.

Regular chocolate seems to get worse every year. Now I only buy Lindt. I'd rather have it as a rare treat than eat junk regularly.

Littleoakhorn · 18/02/2016 01:36

Ritter is disgusting, waxy stuff that tastes of nothing. To be honest I'd say that cheap chocolate in any country is pretty vile. Montezumas is lovely though, well worth it.

Rainbunny · 18/02/2016 01:41

Lol Ninja! Great taste buds think alike.... The Trader's Joe's chocolate bar I like is actually made in Belgium and it's so rich that 2 squares are more than enough. Thank God for TJs!

PitilessYank · 18/02/2016 01:45

Lindt-YAY! I order it online.
Cadbury in the US-Disappointing.
Hershey's-BLECH!

VimFuego101 · 18/02/2016 01:49

Rainbunny - do you have a Bed Bath & Beyond near you? They sell Milka Smile

Rainbunny · 18/02/2016 01:53

Vim - I do and I've also spotted Milka in "Cost Plus World Market" as well, it's been years since I've thought to try it though. I'll have to pick some up now!

thecatfromjapan · 18/02/2016 02:01

I've just received my order of some bars of Côte d'Or chocolate! SmileSmile
Agree with poster above celebrating wonderful ness of montezuma chocolate.

Cadbury's chocolate is disgusting-with-an-edge-of-tragedy now. How could they destroy our childhoods like that?Sad

I visited New York almost 30 years ago. I remember the horrible shock of tasting Hershey's chocolate as though it were yesterday. So bad!!!

Shanster · 18/02/2016 02:03

I'm in the US and I find my local indian grocery store the best place to find smuggled in cadburys. They normally have irn bru, decent tea bags and the vile instant coffee my parents insist on drinking when they visit.

goddessofsmallthings · 18/02/2016 02:05

I only buy Belgian chocolates and chocolate bars as the taste is heavenly and a little goes a very long way .
