to think British chocolate

Is just crap compared to Swiss or German chocolate?

I try kitkats and twix and celebrations. They're just so crummy and un-chocolate-y compared to Lindt, Ritter Sport and other chocolates in Europe.

We're being fobbed off with rubbish chocolate.

It's never as bad as Hershey's though. That actually tastes like bile.

Cadbury's has been destroyed. It's just a greasy mess now and a nasty aftertaste. But Aldi do several different chocolate bars with no palm oil. It's lovely, and it's cheaper than Cadbury too. Look for their Moser Roth.

bruffin · 18/02/2016 08:25

Milka isnt proper milk chocolate, it is ground up hazlenuts,

jay55 · 18/02/2016 08:26

I wish galaxy would go back to its old shape.

I've a nut allergy so can't have most Swiss or Belgian stuff. I miss nice cadburys and not so melty Galaxy.

MagratGarlikAgain · 18/02/2016 08:31

Both Milka and Cadbury's are now produced by Mondelez, which is an American company. Although Milka is marketed as a Swiss brand, there are no production sites for it in Switzerland (closest is Germany). Galaxy is Mars, another American company (and their chocolate tastes shit because of the unique way they have of manufacturing it). Cadbury's changed the recipe too when they were taken over by Kraft (now Mondelez) and they also changed the shape of the chunks of chocolate, which alters the "mouth feel".

murphys · 18/02/2016 08:33

M&S does lovely chocolate. It may not be made in the UK (I've not looked) but their selection boxes are delicious.

A lot of it is made here in SA Bored. I know because I go to the factory shop of the factory where they are made and I can buy it in the M&S packaging from there. So if there was a print run error on the packing or something like that, they sell it off cheap in there. I don't know if its is all m&s made here, but most definitely some of it.

TheHammaconda · 18/02/2016 08:34

Milka is owned by Kraft too. I think it's just the same as Cadbury now. In Belgium we have Philadelphia with Milka rather than Dairy Milk.

Proper, hand-made (none of that Leonidis shit) Belgian chocolate is the best in the world. It's packed with antioxidents, low in sugar and you really do only need a little to feel full. It's practically a health food really...

MagratGarlikAgain · 18/02/2016 08:38

Kraft is now Mondelez International (since 2012). Still American though.

MagratGarlikAgain · 18/02/2016 08:41

Suchard is also Mondelez.

trixymalixy · 18/02/2016 08:44

YANBU, I'm not a big fan of British chocolate. Swiss or Belgian chocolate is far superior, and don't get me started on American chocolate!!

MamaLazarou · 18/02/2016 08:45

M&S chocolate is lovely. Their chocolate-covered Brazil nuts are lush.

Do people really care which country chocolate is made in, as long as it tastes nice?

murphys · 18/02/2016 08:46

I think the best chocolate I have ever tasted is Hotel Chocolat...

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/02/2016 08:55

There's a really nice Italian dark chocolate that a friend brought over for me while I was in the UK, but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called! seem to remember a monochrome sort of packaging though, mostly white with black or very dark brown writing?

zeetea · 18/02/2016 08:58

jay me too - and the new shape dairy milk feels horrid in the mouth! too big and rounded.
I still love galaxy, and lindt is my favourite Chocolate

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/02/2016 09:04

I think it's Gianduja, but not sure. The wrapping has changed since I had it, some 10 years ago!

BourbonChicken · 18/02/2016 09:16

YY to Hotel Chocolat. Best ever, but so expensive!

VertigoNun · 18/02/2016 09:28

I am so sad our nice chocolate is gone. I buy two bars of sainsbury dark chocolate and each week and we make brownies using the borneville recipie. Even the Cadbury cocoa powder is shit, sainsbury do a far superior version. There is simply no other nice chocolate around.

Yambrel · 18/02/2016 09:38

Agree that Sainsburys chocolate (plus powder and fake nutella) is surprisingly tasty. Always think their taster must genuinely like chocolate.

Yambrel · 18/02/2016 09:40

Indian chocolate can be nice too - a bit too smooth but definitely not oversweet or sickly.

tkndnv · 18/02/2016 09:41

I love chocolate but I could not eat any of the American stuff my DP brought me back from a recent trip.

It was like eating vomit - yuck!

SunsofAlanKey · 18/02/2016 09:48

I can't go near any American chocolate. My uncle (who lives in America) came to stay with my Gran and aunt (think very Victorian and strict). My sis and I were there too. Said uncle brought us some American chocolate, we ate some but thought it tasted rank, then we both proceeded to vomit cascades of Hershey sick EVERYWHERE (surely more than we had eaten), my Gran was furious with us. The smell of Hershey today still makes me shudder at the memory of the taste of the endless sick and the anger of my Gran and aunt shouting 'Don't be sick on the counterpane'.

I have stopped eating Cadburys and tend to have Galaxy or Aldi or maybe Lindt.

Gobbolino6 · 18/02/2016 09:54

Having lived on several continents, I'd say British major brands like Cadburys aren't great, but we have some lovely British chocolate producers. I dislike most American chocolate with a few exceptions like turtles.
Japanese chocolate is gorgeous. Swiss/Belgian delightful.
Ghanaian chocolate is objectively vile but I got addicted to it.
Oh dear. I think i eat too much chocolate.

MoonriseKingdom · 18/02/2016 09:58

Well the one good thing about the change in Cadburys is my DH has stopped buying family size bars of the stuff and our consumption has dropped dramatically. I generally prefer a small bit of dark chocolate and think the supermarket own brands tend to be ok.

Surprised at someone mentioning Australian Cadburys- I found it tasted very waxy and didn't melt in the mouth properly. I think they put something in it to stop it melting in the heat.

I have had Hershey's kisses once. It is the only time I have ever spat chocolate out! The taste of vomit was v strong.

kelda · 18/02/2016 10:03

Kitkat is made by Nestyle, a Swiss company. And crap, along with Milka. Lindt is wonderful and the only decent Swiss chocolate.

Belgian chocolate is great, especially the handmade stuff. Agree that Leonidas is rubbish - it used to be lovely but I reckon they have gone the way of Kraft/cadbury's by changing the oil used.

I have just discovered an artisanal belgian chocolate shop called Bittersweet, possibly the best chocolates in the world www.bittersweet.be

scarednoob · 18/02/2016 10:15

I think it depends on your tastes. I have the sweet toothed taste of a fat child so I prefer english stuff, especially white chocolate. I even love Hershey's Blush. But if you have a slightly more sophisticated palate, I can see why you'd prefer the thicker real stuff

feellikeahugefailure · 18/02/2016 10:19

YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVU

Cheap british chocolate is shit.

Buy good stuff and its the best. Montys is my fave
