An ad for Robert De Niros' new film 'Dirty Grandpa' has just been on TV. AIBU to be sad that such a great actor with a fantastic back catalogue of films has stooped so low as to be involved in such a revolting, crappy project?

He doesn't need the money, gets a lot of press exposure and surely gets offered roles better than this, so WHY?

Why do such great Actors do this?

So depressing. We've seen enormous adverts on the bus - a picture of De Niro leering at a young girl's bikini clad bottom as she bends over. My dds who are 8 and 5 have asked me what Dirty Grandpa is about. I wonder if the people who make these films would like to explain to them? I saw on Twitter someone say "Every time there is a commercial for Dirty Grandpa they should take an award away from Robert de Niro."

I too read that he funds a lot of acting opportunities for talented youngsters who would otherwise have no chance from the money he makes with his more "recent work". If so, good for him.

It's also true that an awful lot of his early "classy" work was not big box office and he didn't earn shed loads.

Maybe this is all he's being offered? Looking around at most of the big films these days, the decent parts are mostly for the youngster (ie, anyone younger than Brad Pitt). Most actors don't retire. If it was all about the money, even those who have done nicely but don't earn the millions that, say Tom Cruise, has, would stop.

Do you think Angela Lansbury needs the money to go and do a 6-month tour of Australia with James Earl Jones at the age of 87? Or come here and do Blithe Spirit in the West End for five months? Ditto Judi Dench still doing stage work in her early-80s right now. They love it, and sometimes it's better to keep working and doing something creative than sitting at home doing sod all. Some are lucky and only get quality products but there are very, very, very few actors who have never made a couple of turkeys. Just like most writers will write at least one shit book and most builders will cock up one housebuilding project.
