To think it's sad that Robert De Niro has stooped so low?

An ad for Robert De Niros' new film 'Dirty Grandpa' has just been on TV. AIBU to be sad that such a great actor with a fantastic back catalogue of films has stooped so low as to be involved in such a revolting, crappy project?

He doesn't need the money, gets a lot of press exposure and surely gets offered roles better than this, so WHY?

Why do such great Actors do this?

At least De Niro hasn't sunk to the depths of Nicolas Cage!

squoosh · 10/01/2016 15:09

That Nicolas Cage ever had a career as an actor is a mystery. Copolla connections are the only possible reason.

MoonriseKingdom · 10/01/2016 15:10

Just been to see the brilliant new Tarantino film 'The hateful 8'. Lots of actors of De Niros age playing interesting characters. Somehow Samuel L Jackson can do rubbish like Snakes on a Plane and still maintain his credibility. It's a shame De Niro isn't making films with the most creative of current directors (Tarantino, Wes Anderson).

Lweji · 10/01/2016 15:11

I suppose I'll have to thank Madoff for The Following, with Kevin Bacon, which I quite like. Warning: it's a blood fest.

IsadoraQuagmire · 10/01/2016 15:13

squoosh I'm American and still don't think Adam S is funny Grin

Maybe I should give Willem another chance then. I haven't actually WATCHED the BT ads he's in. I just have a thing about hating BT, we've had lots of trouble with them!

IsadoraQuagmire · 10/01/2016 15:17

Nicolas Cage is astonishingly unpopular. I really like him. Almost everyone else in the world seems to hate him Grin
I used to have a friend who would threaten to leave the room if you so much as mentioned his name. drama queen

Seriouslyffs · 10/01/2016 15:19

Really interesting thread- yy the film looks awful.
Adam Sandler was in a Spanglish, a wonderful film.

Cerseirys · 10/01/2016 15:23

Nic Cage is astonishingly good in Leaving Las Vegas, which he won an Oscar for. Since then he's given up acting, although that hasn't stopped him making lots of films!

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/01/2016 15:24

I loved Moonstruck and Leaving Las Vegas was an utterly wonderful film.

Lweji · 10/01/2016 15:25

Made me laugh. Grin

IsadoraQuagmire · 10/01/2016 15:28

Cerseirys Grin I really just love him because of his role in Wild At Heart. David Lynch is my favorite director, I can't get enough of his films Smile

IrishDad79 · 10/01/2016 15:29

I was going to post something similar to gaspo the wonder dog. De Niro is one of my favourite actors of all time. I also think he's an outstanding comedic actor as evidenced in the films gaspo mentioned. However, I will concede that bad grandpa doesn't look promising!

Cerseirys · 10/01/2016 15:30

He is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine too. Watched The Sorceror's Apprentice on a plane once, and thoroughly enjoyed it. He was clearly having a ball while making it.

Brightnorthernlights · 10/01/2016 15:31

Gaspodethewonderdog.....That's fascinating, I never knew he auditioned for the part of Sonny.

It's not that I don't think he can't do comedy, I actually think he was quite good in 'Meet the parents', it's that 'Dirty Grandpa' seems to be a real low for an actor that actually has real talent. As Moonrisekingdom says, the parts are there, he has talent, so why not go for parts that show off that talent?

I do like Con Air and that cheesy Christmas film Family Man that Cage made but aside from that I just think he's a bit of a one trick pony. What's going on with that weird Elvis like southern drawl? Wasn't he born and raised in Beverly Hills?

squoosh · 10/01/2016 15:33

Isadora hating BT is an entirely reasonable stance to take so I don;t blame you a jot for refusing to watch the ads in the first place! Grin

IsadoraQuagmire · 10/01/2016 15:40

squoosh Grin

Cerseirys · 10/01/2016 16:19

I know this thread is about De Niro, but let's just take a moment to appreciate the Wonder of the Cage...

MrsJayy · 10/01/2016 17:05

He is a weird Elvis fan the accent is odd he went to school in beverly hills

AgentCooper · 10/01/2016 18:11

Heh heh, I quite fancy seeing Dirty Grandpa! I have a PhD in film and there is so, so much room in my life for lowbrow shite. De Niro is a good comic actor (brilliant in King of Comedy and the Fockers films) so who knows, it might be surprising!

Seriously though, he has done so much wonderful stuff that I think he can do what he wants. And if that's a goofy bro comedy with Zac Efron then fair do's. Doesn't mean that The Deerhunter, Godfather 2, Goodfellas etc are forgotten. I can't think of one really great actor who hasn't been in something crap when they were old and wise enough to know better.

On the subject of the Godfather films, I rewatched parts 1&2 recently and Al Pacino was just beautiful, stunningly beautiful. He's like a god. You'd barely know the craggy wee guy in the Hawaiian shirt in Scarface was the same person.

LionHearty · 10/01/2016 18:17

'I'd rather let Queen Latifah shit in my mouth from a hot air balloon' Shock unbelievable Sad That is a low point is a really quite spectacular career. Wow.

Whycantweallgetalong · 10/01/2016 18:25

I rate him alongside Al Pacino, so kind of agree with OP. Saying that, wonder wether Al's been doing any adverts lately? Hmm

nooka · 10/01/2016 18:46

I've not seen the Dirty Grandpa trailers, but I wonder if it can really be worse than The Big Wedding, which was one of the most unpleasant movies I've ever seen (on a plane and I wanted something light).

Robert de Niro must be something of a workaholic as he has apparently been in 90 films to date. At 72 you'd think he might want to slow down - or possibly spend time with his four year old.

katiekid · 10/01/2016 18:55

whats it about

EachandEveryone · 10/01/2016 19:00

I didn't realise he had such a young child. He does have one of hollywoods longest marriages apparently.

I love him and Al Pacino. He's my dad's favourite so I have many happy memories of being a 9 year old watching The Godfather films and Taxi Driver! I agree with the other poster, the man can do what he wants. It's not as bad as those ex rock stars who end up in their own tribute band.
