To think it's sad that Robert De Niro has stooped so low?

An ad for Robert De Niros' new film 'Dirty Grandpa' has just been on TV. AIBU to be sad that such a great actor with a fantastic back catalogue of films has stooped so low as to be involved in such a revolting, crappy project?

He doesn't need the money, gets a lot of press exposure and surely gets offered roles better than this, so WHY?

Why do such great Actors do this?

Things you never thought you'd hear Robert say

'I'd rather let Queen Latifah shit in my mouth from a hot air balloon'

That trailer looks like something Rodney Dangerfield would have passed on.

squoosh · 09/01/2016 23:40

Dustin Hoffman has made some less than great films in recent years but at least you feel like he's still trying.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/01/2016 23:40

The male nudity seemed to match the female nudity in the trailer , well 45:55 Confused

AnyFucker · 09/01/2016 23:40

sold out

many of them do

fucking greedy twats

TheBestChocolateIsFree · 09/01/2016 23:42

I think the problem is that he's never made any movies that made big big money so he's never been a mega earner. He can do comedy if properly directed though.

Brightnorthernlights · 09/01/2016 23:42

Yes Squoosh, I think that's what it feels like, he's just given up & really doesn't care.

I am totally nonplussed by this also.
You are a major hollywood star, you have worked your way up and have reached the top. Then, for some strange reason, you start appearing in these bloody awful embarrassing cheap movies when you don't need the money cos you are already at the top.
It's like reputational suicide. They can afford to be picky, so why aren't they?

squoosh · 09/01/2016 23:44

That's probably true BestChocolate, he's never been a Tom Hanks style earner despite all the critical acclaim.

MytwinisMilaKunis · 09/01/2016 23:44

I agree op. However is he is supposed to be a bit of a loner and a method actor. He abviously loves acting and I would imagine these type of roles are all he is being it offered at this stage in his life. He has never been in it for the fame or the money. He just likes to act.

YouTheCat · 09/01/2016 23:45

Meh, it's just a film.

Daniel Day Lewis has done bugger all recently because he's just not very good. Most of his films were utterly tedious whilst attempting to be worthy.

Loads of actors make the occasional crap film. Some actors make many, many crap films Adam Sandler, I'm looking at you .

squoosh · 09/01/2016 23:45

He probably thinks 'meh, my obituary as 'greatest actor of his generation' is safe' so let's go phone in some big bucks performances.

YouTheCat · 09/01/2016 23:47

I don't think he does think like that at all. I don't think he really gives a shit. As a pp said, he likes working.

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/01/2016 23:48

Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller, who much like Ant and Dec I find interchangable, are atrocious. Offensively so.

Brightnorthernlights · 09/01/2016 23:48

But do you really think this will pull in the big bucks? I can't work out who would go and see it.

OP posts:
squoosh · 09/01/2016 23:50

YouTheCat I guarantee you that de Niro gets tons of interesting job offers from exciting and edgy writers and directors. But they don't pay as much as Grimy Grandpa or the Rocky and Bullwinkle horror linked to upscreen.

It's clearly about the $$$$

squoosh · 09/01/2016 23:52

Adam Sandler is a mystery. So utterly charmless, no on screen charisma. His continued popularity blows my mind.

YouTheCat · 09/01/2016 23:53

Maybe it looked better on paper?

I loved him in Stardust. I thought it was a brilliant performance. He doesn't play up to his own stereotype. He was so pigeon-holed for years following the Godfather trilogy and good luck to him.

YouTheCat · 09/01/2016 23:53

Adam Sandler has one good film - Little Nicky. Everything else he has ever done has been dire.

squoosh · 09/01/2016 23:55

Brightnorthernlights it's probably hoping to emulate the success of The Hangover or something like that, a mega hit blokey comedy.

Donge13 · 09/01/2016 23:55

I read somewhere that he is doing this type of film to fund scholarships at his Tribeca acting school for less fortunate pupils. All of his fee is given, so he is working for free .

Mmmmcake123 · 09/01/2016 23:56

Travis Bickle roaming the streets in search of the 'sold out' Bob, with the same music. That's a film I'd go and see!

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 09/01/2016 23:57

now Ben Stiller I like- don't know why, but he always looks like he really tried- although I've never liked anything he's done, apart from Zoolander

Adam Sandler always looks like he's a complete dick. An unfunny dick at that

Brightnorthernlights · 09/01/2016 23:58

'Grimy Grandpa' Grin

OP posts:
Mmmmcake123 · 09/01/2016 23:59

Not that I'd want Travis to end Bob, or worse Bob talk sense into young Travis. Didn't think it through really, could be the worst idea for a film ever, but then again, you'd still get to hear and see Travis to that fantastic score.

badtime · 09/01/2016 23:59

The only good comedy he has done is 'Midnight Run', and that is because it is a straight performance that happens to be funny. He has a tendency to start mugging when he is trying to play 'funny'.
