To think this man was just rude?

Shopping with DC earlier, we got to the cereal aisle and I asked DS (3yo) what cereal he wanted. I knew full well that he would say Weetabix as that's what he always has.

A man butted in before DS could answer and told me I should give him oats and fruit. That all these cereals are bad for them. I told him to mind his own business and took the weetabix. He called after me that I was rude. I said he was rude to comment on what a stranger feeds their child.

WIBU? He was rude wasn't he? I will be the first to admit that we don't live off of Kale and Chia Seeds (whatever the hell they are) but it's Weetabix ffs!

And yes, this is thankfully the most exciting thing that's happening in my life at the moment.

Bet he'd have been Uber impressed if you'd picked Oatibix then Grin

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 05/10/2015 16:52

well in fact he was right Grin but should have kept his opinions to himself tbh.
Surprised you didn't twat him with the box of Weetabix tbh.

SpaggyBollocks · 05/10/2015 16:53

how strange.

of course he shouldn't have told you what cereal to pick, but as I am accosted in supermarkets by strangers so infrequently, I probably would have given him a weak/confused smile and left the aisle with my weetabix.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 05/10/2015 16:53

Ah that's par for the course with old folks round here.

I was looking at scones the other day in Tesco and an elderly lady stopped and said "they'll make you fat". I was a bit non plus sed but laughed it off and said that well, they're nice. She continues telling me they're really bad especially if you have jam and cream. I promised her I was only going to have low fat spread.

Then every time I passed her in every other aisle she kept asking me if I was sure I wasn't having jam!

You're better off brushing such comments off. I think people try and make conversation sometimes and it comes out wrong.

You were unnecessarily rude and aggressive.

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 05/10/2015 16:54

(imagining your son chowing down on a bowl of whole oats like a horse)

Queenbean · 05/10/2015 16:55

He was rude

FloggingMolly, no she wasn't

Bellebella · 05/10/2015 16:57

I would have just nodded or said I would bear that in mind and walked off with the weetabix. I wouldn't want to make a scene or anything in the supermarket or in front of my toddler tbh

QuestioningStuff · 05/10/2015 16:57

He wasn't an old man he was probably not much older than me (Early 20s)

I was rude to him but I felt immediately defensive. I hate people commenting on my shopping I think it's really out of order.

I think you were a bit rude, OP. just smile and nod, smile and nod.

WorraLiberty · 05/10/2015 16:59

I'm not keen on do gooders wither but I would have just ignored them, rather than say "Mind your own business".

I do think you were ruder than him tbh.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 05/10/2015 16:59

Another day, another mnetter having someone comment on the eating habits of their child. Seriously, where on earth do you people live?!

WorraLiberty · 05/10/2015 17:00

I couldn't give a shiny shit if people want to comment on my shopping (not that anyone has).

I don't have the energy to give it that much thought.

QuestioningStuff · 05/10/2015 17:02

I don't think I was ruder than him. His comment insinuates that I'm some come of idiot that doesn't realise oats are healthy and a better choice than sugary cereals.

Is it ok for me to follow people around the supermarket and point out their bad choices of food and offer alternatives? I'd get twatted. I was rude but I feel like people like that need to be challenged before they hassle the wrong person.

I dont think you were being unreasonable at all. He was very rude. In fact I might have purposefully (not to give to the children obvs) picked up the most sugar laden lucky charms (if you could find them) shit I could find just to be petulant

BloodyDogHairs · 05/10/2015 17:03

I think you were the one in the wrong, he was just stating the truth.

I'm just glad when I asked my 3yr old what cereal he wanted yesterday that no-one commented how bad the one he picked was cocopops.

He was out of order but you were very rude in your response.

Doublebubblebubble · 05/10/2015 17:06

And afaik weetabixs isnt made from satans foreskin - why he would think that it was worthy of a "health" comment is beyond me...

Furiosa · 05/10/2015 17:06

This is the exact opposite of what happened to me at the weekend. DS wanted a chocolate bar, I said no and a man marched up to me with a five pack of chocolate bars and gave them to me telling me DS can get tucked up in bed with a film and munch his way through all of them.

I laughed but I really think he was serious!
