to expect my food on a plate?

Out for a meal last night, ordered seared tuna with garlic butter, it arrived on a wooden board. Why are so many places serving up food on anything put a plate? It never occurred to me to ask if my food would be served on a plate, it used to be the norm, from now on I'm going to check!
What made it really ironic was that my friend and I were talking about the campaign "we want plates" and laughing at some of the daft ways food is now being served................them my tuna arrived!

YANBU!

Surely the wooden boards can't be as hygienic either?!

LemonPied · 04/10/2015 16:29

I fucking hate it.

PurpleDaisies · 04/10/2015 16:30

Pet hate of mine too. Yanbu.

SimonIsAnArsehole · 04/10/2015 16:30

Pictures on the We Want Plates Facebook page include food served in clogs. Almost makes you grateful when it only turns up on a board, roof tile or plant pot...

Supermanspants · 04/10/2015 16:30

Pretentious shit. YANBU

PurpleDaisies · 04/10/2015 16:34

wewantplates.com

Just remembered this campaign...

PurpleDaisies · 04/10/2015 16:35

Cross posted with you Simon!

DamsonInDistress · 04/10/2015 16:36

I was in a bar serving cocktails in tin cans the other day! Asked the barman to do mine in a proper glass and he looked at me as if I had two heads!

BathtimeFunkster · 04/10/2015 16:38

YABU

Next you'll be saying you don't want to drink out of an old jam jar. Hmm

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/10/2015 16:43

can we add, no dishes within dishes to that? I hate it when you do finally get a place and you have no sodding room on ot became the components are all in their own bowls/dishes etc

a curry you expect the solver bowls and everything served individually and you can mix and match on the plate. nut burger and chips? put straight on a plate. I don't want burger on a plate then chips in a cup on the plate and salad in a dish in the plate.

you can't eat /cut it like that

PurpleDaisies · 04/10/2015 16:43

I had a coffee given to me in a metal mug the other day. Not only did it burn my knuckles when I picked it up but it went cold really quickly.

I had a bang head on the table moment when I was told by the waitress that I couldn't have a proper mug because they didn't have any and when I asked why she said the metal ones looked really pretty. I said I thought it was better that they did the job of protecting your hands and keeping the drink hot rather than just looking pretty but apparently that was madness. I won't be going back again.

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/10/2015 16:44

Oh ffs typos Blush

mileend2bermondsey · 04/10/2015 16:44

I don't mind what ridculous ways they choose to serve the food, the worst I've seen was frisbee as a plate - seriously, as I will always ask for a plate. I was once told that the place didn't have plates, only some sort of absurd basket affair, I was fuming. FFS a restaurant should have plates. Thats fucking basic.

ICanSeeForMiles · 04/10/2015 16:45

I got a brownie and ice cream on a fucking bit of slate. It was a 'beat the melted stuff running off the plate' pain in the arse.

LemonPied · 04/10/2015 16:46

My sister got one of these for her birthday. What's wrong with an average glass?

LemonPied · 04/10/2015 16:47

Oh picture didn't post, it's a jar with a handle, lid and a straw.

balletgirlmum · 04/10/2015 16:47

I went to a Toby Carvery yesterday after attending a school open day across the road. I mean come on you think you know what to expect there) we were in the bar area & ordered bar snacks of carvery baguettes, salad & roasties.
They came on a wooden board! I hate it.

LumelaMme · 04/10/2015 16:48

I have been known to ask for a plate for my salad, as I can't cut it up when it's down in a bloody bowl. Huge great leaves of lettuce: what else are you supposed to do but hack them up? And how can you do that with the tip of your knife?

And chips in little buckets? And food on curvy-not-quite-plates which tip up if you try to cut anything up anywhere but dead centre.

mileend2bermondsey · 04/10/2015 16:48

The desire for some restaurants to be as pretentious-try-hard-hipster as possible trump the customers desire to be able to eat their meal in comfort. I avoid Shoreditch for this reason in additon to the atmosphere of general self satisfaction.

Panicmode1 · 04/10/2015 16:49

I hate it too - hopefully the fad will pass soon - I don't know anyone who wants their food on a flat slate/board/tile rather than a proper plate!

And metal mugs - how ridiculous!

cleaty · 04/10/2015 16:50

Salad on a salad leaf, chips in metal buckets, meat on a chunk of slate.

FiveandTwentyPast · 04/10/2015 16:51

I'm pretty sure this trend must have almost run its course by now. I've had food on boards, in buckets and paper bags at Beefeater and Frankie and Benny's recently (not my choice of restaurants, other people's birthdays). When middle of the road chain restaurants are doing something it's time for the cool kids to move on, hopefully back to plates.

CwtchesAndCuddles1 · 04/10/2015 16:54

I did have a mini rebellion over the tuna.............once our main meals had been placed on the table the server asked if we would like anything else, I asked for a hot plate to put my food on! She looked bemused but soon returned with a nice hot normal plate!

PHANTOMnamechanger · 04/10/2015 16:57

I don't know where you are all eating but I've only ever had a wooden board served with the bread on, with a recess for the soup bowl, and a wooden board with a little mini frying pan of salted caramel baked alaska (which was absolutely divine!)

everything else round here comes on plates, except the occassional salad in a separate dish, but I just tip that out onto the plate.

CwtchesAndCuddles1 · 04/10/2015 17:00

This was a restaurant in a national 4 star hotel chain!
