to expect my food on a plate?

Out for a meal last night, ordered seared tuna with garlic butter, it arrived on a wooden board. Why are so many places serving up food on anything put a plate? It never occurred to me to ask if my food would be served on a plate, it used to be the norm, from now on I'm going to check!
What made it really ironic was that my friend and I were talking about the campaign "we want plates" and laughing at some of the daft ways food is now being served................them my tuna arrived!

I had a fantastic breakfast served on slate. It was horrible. The next time i was there i asked for a plate. Slate and knives are a horrible combo.

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 04/10/2015 18:36

Arf at cat flaps Grin

Well nothing would surprise me frankly.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 04/10/2015 18:38

I have just been whiling away some time on the we want plates website - the things on here are TAME compared to that

salad in a tea cup, sausages in a naff SKULL and a meal served on a glass tray with a fish in a fish tank swimming underneath it!

and lots of messy pictures of sauces and gravy running off flat objects - ridiculous!

RaspberrySwitchblade · 04/10/2015 18:39

I had chips served in a fucking enamel mug last week

on a plate [eyeroll]

PHANTOMnamechanger · 04/10/2015 18:40

theres a meal in one of those metal dog bowls complete with paw prints on it [why] so cat flaps may well be next, then litter trays [boak]

Arsicles · 04/10/2015 18:49

Worst I've had was burger on a metal ashtray (and therefore stone cold with halo of congealed grease), and the chips in a baked bean can alongside, complete with sharp edges from the can opener. Garbage chic.....?

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 04/10/2015 18:54

An ashtray? Shock Mine would be sent straight back if it arrived in an ashtray. I don't care if it's never seen a cigarette in its life, I just could not eat out of an ashtray.

noeffingidea · 04/10/2015 20:46

Some of those photos on the we want plates website actually make me feel a bit sick.
Yeah, I think I'll just stick to the harvester.

8misskitty8 · 04/10/2015 22:15

I'm sure we've had a post similar to this before ? it was about strange ways bread is served and there was photos.

Remember bread in a slipper ! An actual grandad like slipper, boak.

hellinabreadbasket · 04/10/2015 22:34

I had a roast chicken served up in what I'd describe as a "chip frying basket" (no idea of proper terminology) - the oil off of the chicken ran straight on to my lap (of. Fairly expensive dress as it was Christmas time).:. Waiter was like "oh yeah that happens a lot" no refund, offer to dry clean etc.

Chrysanthemum5 · 04/10/2015 22:37

Lemon- the suitcases came with a straw. Fine for me with my own gin, not so nice for people sharing a cocktail which was in a larger suitcase with several straws - yuck!

Yambabe · 04/10/2015 22:56

I've probably posted this before, but during a night out in Edinburgh at the beginning of this year DH and I were served our "sharing platter" starter on this, with no individual plates either Hmm

We decided to look on the bright side. It was Scotland in January, if it snowed at least we would be able to dig the car out!

EBearhug · 04/10/2015 23:03

I went out last week, and was served chicken with potatoes and veg - including peas - and gravy on a breadboard. I did give them feedback. They said next time I can ask for a plate. They also said that they've had similar comments from a number of other customers. If this is the case, why are they still doing it? Why not use plates from the outset, and preempt the comments?

Also, when they were clearing the table, the waitresses had to push the boards to the end of the table to be able to pick them up, because there's no raised edge to pick them up with like you have with proper plates.

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/10/2015 23:24

the goldfish ones are so cruel Sad

must be really stressful for them.

Roobix04 · 05/10/2015 00:17

The best one I saw on twitter was a meal served in a garden trowel. The garden trowel was brought out on a children's bible. A fucking bible! If nothing else I'm sure some people would find that offensive.

MidniteScribbler · 05/10/2015 00:34

I went to McDonalds the other day and got served my burger on a wooden board and the chips were in a metal basket!

When Maccas start serving on wooden boards, you know that the trend has probably run its course.

IPityThePontipines · 05/10/2015 03:01

Midnite - when did it become compulsory to serve burgers in brioche buns? They're too greasy and don't absorb the juice of the burger.

Moveon - That picture makes me feel ill. I would have to send that back.

Baconyum · 05/10/2015 03:16

Just wondering
A his many people complain and insist on proper normal plates cups and glasses if this happens? Me for one.

B how does this get past the health and safety regs? Cross contamination of germs and allergens, materials that can't be sterilised? And h&s inspectors that can answer this?

Crazy! If I'm going out to eat gimme it hot tasty and good value!

Senpai · 05/10/2015 04:28

MidniteScribbler That's your McDonald's?? Shock

Wow, I feel let down by corporate American. We get flat burgers with squished buns thrown in a bag and handed to us at the counter. You have to fish it all out when you sit down and eat it on your tray. Your "plate" is your paper burger wrapper.

anklebitersmum · 05/10/2015 05:09

Senpai it's off the new 'Create your taste' menu dont ya know! Still can't tempt me I'm afraid..

YakTriangle · 05/10/2015 05:09

Frankie and Benny's new thing of serving burgers on wooden chopping boards and fries in a greasy paper bag has annoyed me. I know it's not that amazing a place to start with, but I was quite fond of the occasional visit.

MidniteScribbler · 05/10/2015 05:51

MidniteScribbler That's your McDonald's?? shock

Yes, they seem to have had a massive push to update themselves over here in Australia. It's called 'Create Your Own' and you use a touch screen to select your options for what you want on your burger. It then gets served to your table as per above. I tried one the other day for the first time, and wooden board aside, it was actually really good. Between that and some fo the cakes available at McCafe, I'm prepared to relax my previous stance on Maccas.
