to expect my food on a plate?

Out for a meal last night, ordered seared tuna with garlic butter, it arrived on a wooden board. Why are so many places serving up food on anything put a plate? It never occurred to me to ask if my food would be served on a plate, it used to be the norm, from now on I'm going to check!
What made it really ironic was that my friend and I were talking about the campaign "we want plates" and laughing at some of the daft ways food is now being served................them my tuna arrived!

oh I just remembered DHs pudding problems!
he does love a hot pudd with custard - so he ordered a crumble - it came in an individual ceramic pie dish thing, with a separate jug of custard. The crumble topping was really domed though, so there was no way of pouring the custard on and eating it, it would have run off the edges onto the table. he had to eat a hole out of the middle first and pour the custard in.

BUT that it not the worst custardy tale, oh no.
There are places out there that serve crumble with only a choice of cream or ice cream and no custard at all. WTF??

PHANTOMnamechanger · 04/10/2015 17:04

on a serious note, surely with boards the issue is not only hygeine, but how can you ensure allergens are not lurking in the scratches?

DD is gluten free and this is a real concern hence us having separate chopping boards etc at home.

gamerchick · 04/10/2015 17:16

I wouldn't be happy with a wooden board. I won't even have a wooden chopping board at home.

Whoever thought up this idea needs a good thump personally.

cleaty · 04/10/2015 17:20

I quite fancy having a dinner party, and thinking of the most insane things to serve food on.

Starlingsintheslipstream · 04/10/2015 17:20

I got a pizza on a lazy Susan type thing yesterday Hmm. It didn't really work as finger food because it was a bit sloppy. Everytime I attempted to cut it the thing span round!

IPityThePontipines · 04/10/2015 17:21

When years from now, they are showing "I Love the Twenty-Tens", this is the main thing that they will be poking fun at. It is an absolutely ludicrous trend and unhygienic too.

I follow We Want Plates on Twitter and some of the photos are appalling, I am amazed anywhere has the nerve to serve food like that.

ValancyJane · 04/10/2015 17:22

Oh YADNBU, I bloody can't wait for this fad to pass. I'm not astoundingly keen when chips come in mini 'fryers' either. I want a plate!!!

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 04/10/2015 17:28

I was googling recipes the other day and found some blog with photos from a restaurant that seemed to specialise in almost non-existent 'food' that didn't even look like real food on slate and lumps of wood. There were so many edible flowers, bits of crumbled rubble type stuff and smears of foamy shit that I couldn't detect exactly what it was that had been ordered, that the unlucky recipient was supposed to eat, once they'd worked their way through all the pretty but pointless garnishes.

I like a bit of posh food but this has gone to far now - it's pretentious beyond belief.

ivykaty44 · 04/10/2015 17:32

We went for a meal a while back and the food came on a board and the gravy in a boat - I asked the waiter if we could have plates due to the fact that as soon as weoured the gravy it would drip onto the table and the floor, making quite a mess. The waiter promptly fetched plates and explained they had pointed out this fault to the kitchen but they were not prepared to change the serving method. Bizarre...!

Vixxfacee · 04/10/2015 17:38

I was served my steak on a hot stone, chips in a basket, salad in a bowl will a tiny plate on a wooden board. So difficult to eat as there was nowhere to actually put all the food together.

ChilliAndMint · 04/10/2015 17:41

Weatherspoons have the most beautiful plates.

Years ago I had about six place setting of this, now all I have is a little cow creamer

Slates!!! I think someone dyslexic must have come up with that.

They do say that wooden chopping boards have a natural anti-bacterial component, so maybe boards aren't too bad. My dh will often choose to eat off wood, it makes me Hmm and I think it's a bit bloody silly.

I'm not sure whether I'd rather go back to the days of square or octagonal plates though. It seemed anything to make the food more interesting why not just make the food more interesting?

Mumteedum · 04/10/2015 17:43

Birthday lunch fir ds's friend aged 4 today. Brought ds's kid's meal roast dinner in a long rectangular dishwasher thing. How is a 4 year old meant to manage that? No room to cut anything up. Immediately asked to reserve on a normal plate!

Chrysanthemum5 · 04/10/2015 17:47

I went out recently to a place I've eaten at many times and it was fine. This time the good came on wooden boards (sauce anyone?) and the drinks came in small suitcases - fortunately the waiter had a nice line in cheese jokes which distracted me from the absurdity of drinking gin from a suitcase

JugglingFromHereToThere · 04/10/2015 17:47

Anyone been following The Great British Menu this series?
There have been some classic examples of ridiculous OTT presentation of food on that ... food hidden in a book, on a bed of grass, on your own mini picnic table ... anywhere but on a plate!
Judging from GBM, and inspired by WI themes, seems like this trend is at the height of it's madness
Hopefully though it may mean that a return to sanity is just round the corner

  • something of which I'm sure the WI would really approve Smile
MarvinKMooney · 04/10/2015 17:47

A restaurant round our way serves the bread in flat caps. God knows how many heads they've been on. I can't see them laundering them after every service. Yuck.

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 04/10/2015 17:49

Oh that is disgusting!

balls2DWall · 04/10/2015 17:52

i reckon its to disguise the miniscule portions some places give. if they were to put it on a plate you would be thinking hell no no paying €€ for that!!! plus i wonder how they wash all those finicky bits of baskets n slates

LemonPied · 04/10/2015 17:54

How the frig do you drink out a suitcase?!

Goingtobeawesome · 04/10/2015 17:58

I doubt they are using used flat caps that have been worn on a head!

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 04/10/2015 18:01

I think they are getting more outlandish on purpose now, like Amazon using stupidly bigger and bigger boxes for tiny items, and Starbucks coming up with ludicrous spellings for customers' names on cups.

Maybe we'll have soup in a condom with a knot in the top and a needle for piercing the end so you can squirt it into your mouth like milking a cow's udder, followed by Lobster Mac'n'Cheese served on a vintage (used) rusty dustpan and brush with ice cream served on a table tennis bat.

MarvinKMooney · 04/10/2015 18:03

going I agree, but I've been there twice and seen people try them on between courses. Like I say: yuck.

CwtchesAndCuddles1 · 04/10/2015 18:07

My mum is a good cook and active WI member - you should hear her views on some of the offerings that have been served up on Great British Menu!!!

Plates all the way !!!!

I read that as bread served in cat flaps Marvin which actually, I'd be interested to see.
