To think this friendship age gap is strange?

My 27 year old ex is good friends with an 18 year old. He lives with him, goes out with drinks for him etc. This friend is bisexual and I'm beginning to wonder whether my ex is too but that's besides the point. AIBU to find it weird that he's friends with such a young boy/man?

My best friend was 18 and I was 25. We are still best friends now. Surely it is if you have similar interests and not age?

avocadotoast · 02/07/2015 19:14

Yes, I'd say YABU. There's nothing wrong with having friends of different ages, they're both adults.

Tuskerfull · 02/07/2015 19:16

YABU. I was prepared to post about my friendship with a 63 year old woman that started when I was 21, and you're talking about nine years!

Anon4Now2015 · 02/07/2015 19:18

I'm 38. One of my previous closest friends is now 55 (we don't see each other very much any more for several reasons but not age) and two of my best friends are 22. I don't see what the problem is.

MagicMojito · 02/07/2015 19:18

Yes yabu. Some of my best friends -before I got all anti social and weird-- were between 23-30, I was 17 when I started working/socializing with them.

OhEmGeee · 02/07/2015 19:18

Is it because he's 18 or because of the age gap?

I'm in my 30s and some of my closest friends are 8 years younger than me. So what? Confused

OttiliaVonBCup · 02/07/2015 19:19

I've always had older friends, of both sexes.

In fact, I don't think I ever had a younger one.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 02/07/2015 19:19

I think you know you are being unreasonable. It really is not that big of an age difference. Is it the "teen" part that is bothering you?

My best friend when I was 17 was 25 and male. Everyone always assumed there must be something going on between us. There wasn't.

MagicMojito · 02/07/2015 19:20

Nice little strike out fail there! Blush

PinkPearlClutcher · 02/07/2015 19:21

I started work part time at 16, I was friends with people anywhere between 16-65. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

bluejeanswhiteshirt · 02/07/2015 19:22

I think I'm being unreasonable and also a bit of a hypocrite because some of my closest friends in the past have been in their late 30s to mid 40s but as OhEmGee pointed out, it's more the fact that he's only 18 which is why I think it's a bit odd. He looks so childlike and acts like most (not all) 18 year olds and there's obviously nothing wrong with that but my ex seems to be wanting to relive his teenage years and abandoning all responsibilities!

MagicMojito · 02/07/2015 19:22

What is it that you find odd about it?

MagicMojito · 02/07/2015 19:24

Xpost, Your problem is that your ex is a man child.
Good job he's your ex then! Grin

Pumpkinpositive · 02/07/2015 19:25

YABU. Is there more to this? Confused

OhEmGeee · 02/07/2015 19:26

Why do you care what your ex is doing anyway? Do you have DC together?

Purplepixiedust · 02/07/2015 19:29

Yabu. My best female friend is 6 years older than me. We met at work at 17. I am 42 now. My DH is 7 years older. At 18 my boyfriend was 10 years older. As a result, naturally many of my friends are older than me. I really don't see a problem.

Oh and seeing as he is your ex, what does it matter to you anyway?

wheresthelight · 02/07/2015 19:30

At 18 my best friends were 40 and 36 why is it odd?

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 02/07/2015 19:30

Er one my best friends is exactly 10 years younger than me we have a similar upbringing similar thoughts. I've also had close friends 10, 20 years older than me. I don't get the problem at all.

Is it because they live together, well when you house share that again is quite common.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 02/07/2015 19:32

But unless you have children together what's it got to do with you?

bluejeanswhiteshirt · 02/07/2015 19:32

Yeah we have a 9 month old dd together. I try not to care what he's doing but I can't seem to help it! I need to get a life.

I'm 27 abd at uni and have some very good friends that are 19/20.

TidyDancer · 02/07/2015 19:35

I am 31. My youngest friend is 16 and my oldest is 91. Not sure if that helps!

BabyFeets · 02/07/2015 19:35

No not weird

GobblersKnob · 02/07/2015 19:36

I am 40, I have friends my age and then everything from 17 to 80. One of my very best friends is 21.

CaptainHolt · 02/07/2015 19:48

I have a friend who is 16 and one who is 82. I'm also bisexual but I'm not fucking either of them. My bff and I have the exact age difference of a mere 9 years that your ex and his pal have.
