To have thought we should have been allowed another cup

Was in a restaurant today with my parents they wanted a cream tea we saw on the notice board that it came with a big pot of tea and two generous sized scones with cream and jam.
My parents seeing the size of it decided to order the one between them it wasn't stated as either been for one or two people.
Anyway so we ordered paid and one cup was put on the tray and of course we asked if we could have another cup and the guy who happened to be the manager refused we was bit taken back by this and thought maybe he had misunderstood so again we said we want another cup to which he refused again.
We asked why and he said this is a cream tea for one person and I said its too much for my parents and they want to share he replied that he is a business and that if we want another cup then we have to buy a separate cup of tea I said that's ridiculous and he said no it isn't and he would not budge. He then said that its like him giving one cream tea to a load of people to share and its not good for his business.
Just interested in your thoughts.

I think it is ridiculous. The manager has lost 3 customers over a cup of tea.

Sorry, but it's totally fair enough. Having worked in a cafe, I understand why they have to do this. It does seem tight, but nowadays, cafe owners really need to ensure that each meal pays for itself. If you worked in the cafe I worked in for even a day you'd see how up against the wall they are financially, especially non-chain cafes.

He has a point. It's a cream tea for one. You didn't order it for 2. You should have ordered another cup of tea and then shared the food.

2 full size scones is not a cream tea for one person! And if you buy a pot of tea you've paid for that amount of tea - it's not the cafés business who drinks it. Yanbu.

I can see his point. Sharing the scones is fair enough if it's too much for one, but you would normally buy a separate cup of tea, unless it was a cream tea for 2. Manager sounds a pedantic knobber though.

We have had a cream tea like this and shared it but we always pay for the second cup of tea. Never occurred to me that we wouldn't have to pay for the second cup.

They should have let you have another cup, yes. They should also clearly advertise that it's apparently a cream tea for one person even though it sounds far too big for one person.

Yanbu. If you've paid for a pot you should be allowed to share it. My dp and I often share dessert which is a common thing to do.

So there were 2 scones but only one cup? That's a bit odd...
If that's the case then I don't think YWBU to request another cup, I can see his point though.

If the tea pot holds two cups worth of tea then surely the manager is not losing out? Customer has already paid for two cups of tea! And two scones is too much for a one-person cream tea!

Sorry but to those who say the cafe owner was in the right; if he's flogging two bloody scones for one cream tea then he needs to have a better grasp of his own overheads.

Wasn't in Castleton was it? We once had a very overpriced cream tea in a café there with a manager who was a bit of a misery

I must be frigging greedy then as every cream tea I've ever had or seen has 2 scones per person. I'd think I was shortchanged if i got one.

he probably knows that he can get away with treating people like this as he is in a tourist hotspot and will always have people coming in

poor customer service skills - id make a complaint. personally i think what a tight arse and not a good way to keep customers coming back with that attitude! the least he could have done is explain that its supposed to be for one but needs to make that clear on the menu so in that instance would provide an extra cup...still think what a tight arse though and wouldnt have harmed his business to provide the cup and have you spend money there over the years then not spend your money there due to bad experience x
