To have thought we should have been allowed another cup

Was in a restaurant today with my parents they wanted a cream tea we saw on the notice board that it came with a big pot of tea and two generous sized scones with cream and jam.
My parents seeing the size of it decided to order the one between them it wasn't stated as either been for one or two people.
Anyway so we ordered paid and one cup was put on the tray and of course we asked if we could have another cup and the guy who happened to be the manager refused we was bit taken back by this and thought maybe he had misunderstood so again we said we want another cup to which he refused again.
We asked why and he said this is a cream tea for one person and I said its too much for my parents and they want to share he replied that he is a business and that if we want another cup then we have to buy a separate cup of tea I said that's ridiculous and he said no it isn't and he would not budge. He then said that its like him giving one cream tea to a load of people to share and its not good for his business.
Just interested in your thoughts.

yes, there should always be two scones, one fruit, one plain ITS THE LAW!

Animpala - can you tell me, for it to be a devon cream tea, must i put the jam on first or the cream?

PurpleDaisies · 01/06/2015 20:37

Presumably the tea came in a teapot only1scoop. Otherwise that would be stingy!

KurriKurri · 01/06/2015 20:38

I would have thought the best way to hurt a business is to be rude and unaccomodating to your customers. If it were me running the place I would say no problem, I'd rather sell one cream tea to two people than none. I certainly couldn't eat two scones and my elderly Mum wouldn't be able to either. I would go back to a place that was willing to be polite and flexible and I would recommend it to friends.

My friend and I often go our for an afternoon cuppa somewhere, Once we stopped in a village we often pass through and ordered tea and cakes at a cafe. The woman running the place said 'Sorry, it's only ten minutes until closing time, I'm not serving any more teas' so we left, and have never been back. If she hadn't been so rude we;d probably have bought tea there quite frequently. Being rude to customers is stupid and counter productive.

yabu as i now want a cream tea!!

fourchetteoff · 01/06/2015 20:39

TheOriginal and Hoplittle - I've been gagging slightly throughout this entire thread!
I haven't watched the original, but I've got a fair idea what it's about as I have seen the reactions of people who did watch it. Shock

SaucyJack · 01/06/2015 20:39

YABU.

Sharing a drink is a bit tight really isn't it? That's where the profit they need to keep the business going is kept. Imagine if all their customers shared one pot of tea for one amongst them?

I'd always expect to pay for a cup or pot for one, or two cups or a pot for two. It's like the rent on your seat.

7amWakeUp · 01/06/2015 20:40

I'd have thought it was for two with a scone each, who on earth can eat two cream scones in one sitting and not feel sick

Yanbu

karatekimmi · 01/06/2015 20:40

But the amount of tea is a fixed amount - it doesn't matter if you share it, you aren't asking for any more. An extra cup doesn't change the amount that is given.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 01/06/2015 20:42

No- sharing a piece of cake is fine. Sharing a pot of tea for one is not Confused

TheoriginalLEM · 01/06/2015 20:43

The reactions are the funniest thing on the internet ever!

Aermingers · 01/06/2015 20:44

Hop that film was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title. Blush

Next AIBU: AIBU to think this man shouldn't have seen us together to make a massive insect thingy?

SilverBirch2015 · 01/06/2015 20:45

YABU. Here, in the Cotswold's, cream teas are 2 scones for 1 person. You should have explained when ordering, that DPs were going to share and paid for the second cup of tea. That's the normal behaviour most customers would use.

Owner probably should have explained for next time, politely given you another cup though and then gossiped in the kitchen about those PIA customers on table 5. Or alternatively come on to MN this evening to moan about the cheek of some customers. Grin

AnImpalaCalledBABY · 01/06/2015 20:47

LEM, it's supposed to be cream first here and jam first for a Cornish cream tea but I and everyone I know do jam first Grin

stayathomegardener · 01/06/2015 20:48

I had afternoon tea at Sandy Lane in Febuary and
I am sure they are arbritrators in cream tea etiquette. Wink

Two scones per person, they tell you it is generous and advise you to share.
You need to purchase an extra pot of tea though.

Stealthpolarbear · 01/06/2015 20:50

ell I think ywbu but two sones is too much for one surely
and I'm a guts
unless they were small

fastdaytears · 01/06/2015 20:50

Two scones (NOT two halves) is definitely a minimum portion size, in Devon it is anyway. The big controversy is when people want both plain or both fruit...

usualsuspect333 · 01/06/2015 20:52

I work in a cafe. I would have given you an extra cup then done exactly what SilverBirch said and gone and slagged you off in the kitchen[ grin]

icelollycraving · 01/06/2015 20:56

What did you have? I may have missed that. Please tell me you didn't share between all of you.

MissDuke · 01/06/2015 20:57

I have never had a cream tea and after this thread certainly won't be as I wouldn't want two scones. I normally share ONE with someone, never mind two! I think the man was very rude and unreasonable, however I can see his frustration at three adults taking up a table in a very busy cafe after having spent only 4.99. I can see why cafes struggle so much to make money.

HopLittleBunny · 01/06/2015 20:59

I'm quite relieved it wasn't just me thinking that Grin

expatinscotland · 01/06/2015 20:59

After reading more, I think YABU.

slippermaiden · 01/06/2015 21:00

I think that's ridiculous. It would have cost him nothing to give you an extra empty cup! And this is why our society is getting fatter and fatter, two scones for one person ??
