To have thought we should have been allowed another cup

Was in a restaurant today with my parents they wanted a cream tea we saw on the notice board that it came with a big pot of tea and two generous sized scones with cream and jam.
My parents seeing the size of it decided to order the one between them it wasn't stated as either been for one or two people.
Anyway so we ordered paid and one cup was put on the tray and of course we asked if we could have another cup and the guy who happened to be the manager refused we was bit taken back by this and thought maybe he had misunderstood so again we said we want another cup to which he refused again.
We asked why and he said this is a cream tea for one person and I said its too much for my parents and they want to share he replied that he is a business and that if we want another cup then we have to buy a separate cup of tea I said that's ridiculous and he said no it isn't and he would not budge. He then said that its like him giving one cream tea to a load of people to share and its not good for his business.
Just interested in your thoughts.

Most places would give you another cup. It's like ordering a meal in a restaurant and asking for another plate for your baby. In fact staff have even offered the extra plate before I asked, IME.

lakia · 01/06/2015 20:12

we did have a good laugh about it after.

If a cream tea is only 4.99 then surely an extra cuppa isn't much Confused

Suefla62 · 01/06/2015 20:14

For goodness sake, just order another cup of tea.

Custardcream14 · 01/06/2015 20:15

This isn't the same as sharing a dessert, it's trying to pull a fast one. Fine if you want to share the food but you should have paid for another tea.

I've never had a cream tea with less than two scones, wtf !

lakia · 01/06/2015 20:15

We have asked for another cup before in other cafes with no issues.
My parents are elderly and you know how the elderly can be.
For what its worth I would have been delighted with the size of the cream tea if I wasn't dieting.

2 scones for 1 person? Surely you all mean a scone sliced in half to give 2 pieces? I have a good appetite but couldn't manage a cream tea with 2 full scones!

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 01/06/2015 20:15

Well if it was busy why should he let you have a whole table for the price of a cream tea for ONE? Plenty of other punters willing to pay more. It's a business, not a charity.
You wouldn't walk into a restaurant and order one plate of food and extra plates for a couple of people.

Only1scoop · 01/06/2015 20:16

My parents are elderly is have just bought an extra cuppa and saved the time to enjoy my tea.

lakia · 01/06/2015 20:17

No its isn't much to buy another tea but they didn't want that much tea and innocently just thought they would share not realisng it would cause so much objection.

Maybe go back to the 'other cafes' and avoid this one then

diddl · 01/06/2015 20:18

So if it's a cream tea for one person, did he watch to make sure that only one of them ate both the scones??Hmm

usualsuspect333 · 01/06/2015 20:21

You should have paid for another cup of tea.

Cafes need to make money.

ItalianLemons · 01/06/2015 20:24

Agree with Vivian Mary and raawth completely but then I've been there. "You know how the elderly can be" unfortunately yes, never again! I'm sure your parents are grand, many aren't!

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 01/06/2015 20:28

Sadly I think cafe owners get so pissed off with customers penny pinching, that it makes them intolerant. I do think customers ought to think more about whether they might be hurting the business rather than helping it. To me, and a lot of other people on here, it seems obvious- if you buy a cream tea for one, you can share the scones if you want. But sharing the pot of tea for one by asking for an extra cup is going too far. Sorry.

Snoozybird · 01/06/2015 20:30

I've never heard of a two-scone cream tea for one!

Was it two actual scones i.e 4 halves, or 2 halves?

lakia · 01/06/2015 20:31

it was 4 halves

ActiviaYoghurt · 01/06/2015 20:33

You should have ordered one cream tea and cup of tea.

AnImpalaCalledBABY · 01/06/2015 20:33

YABU, your parents were being stingy

Fine to share the scones but they should have ordered another cup of tea

Only1scoop · 01/06/2015 20:33

I've never had a cream tea where the scones are sliced into halves already.

whatever22 · 01/06/2015 20:34

Completely ridiculous all the people saying you should have ordered something you didn't want just to 'help keep the cafe afloat'. Its a business, not a charity, you should be able to buy what you want.

The other day my friend and I fancied something sweet, and the cafe we stopped at had a huge slices of cake. Presumably we 'should' have bought one each, and each thrown half away?? Luckily, the cafe owners weren't as nuts as some of the responders here and were perfectly happy to sell us the one piece of cake we wanted and give us two forks so we could share.

This cafe owner was trying to screw you into paying more money (presumably because in a touristy area most people don't come back so he favours grabbing as much money as possible from customers over giving good customer service). Tell trip advisor what an ass he was, and never go there again.

AnImpalaCalledBABY · 01/06/2015 20:35

I live in Devon, cream tea capital of the country and there are always two scones Grin

Only1scoop · 01/06/2015 20:35

One piece of cake between you fair enough but tipping a hot drink between two when it's prepared for one is a bit Confused

TheoriginalLEM · 01/06/2015 20:36

The cafe near me does a cream tea for one person with two Mahooosive scones, even i feel sick if i don't share with dd and i am a cream tea monster - these are by far the best cream teas in the world, ever, wel the scones are, but the tea is served in crap mugs better served for coffee which ruins it a tad. I always buy a second drink for DD though as she doesnt drink tea, however i wouldn't have the audacity to ask for a second cup for the tea - even though i get at least two cups from it. At £4.50 it is really good value (for where i live).

HopLittleBunny · 01/06/2015 20:36

2 scones 1 cup?

Sorry. I'll get my coat.
