"As long as they are not ginger"

I am currently expecting DC2.

I have just told my old boss the news and his first response was "I bet you want a boy" followed by "as long as they are not ginger." (Both DD and I have red hair).

AIBU to think this is so so rude and unprofessional, and even cruel to my DD?

It jealousy. Ginger hair is awesome. I would have loved it for myself my babies.

usualsuspect333 · 21/05/2015 15:18

He sounds like a twat.

Not sure what's going on with the first couple of replies on this thread?

fourchetteoff · 21/05/2015 15:20

That's pretty shitty a comment. There are not enough auburn-haired people out there IMO. A handsome ginger guy is about as attractive as you can get for me.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 21/05/2015 15:22

ginger hair is lovely! DTDs have a hint of auburn in their hair, I'd be delighted if there was more.

TeenAndTween · 21/05/2015 15:23

I really don't understand why people make negative remarks about red hair. It seems so random, and red hair is nice, and much less common than shades of brown or natural blonde.

AHamburgerinFrankfurt · 21/05/2015 15:23

He's probably posting on some site right now saying "I really put my foot in it today ...."

I love ginger hair and am still hoping DD3 will change back to ginger when she grows up.

YellowTulips · 21/05/2015 15:23

Red hair is lovely - end of.

He was a dick.

Fatstacks · 21/05/2015 15:24

That and when people say 'As long as it's healthy'

Gives me the right hump.

Purplepoodle · 21/05/2015 15:24

Twatish remark. Not uncommon unfortunately

Purplefrogshoes · 21/05/2015 15:25

my ds was born last week and he has loads of flame coloured hair, I've never been so proud, he is gorgeous. Your boss sounds like a twat

Tiredbadger · 21/05/2015 15:26

Thank you for the nice comments. He is a twat!

But I think he knows he put his foot in it as I ignored him for a while then said red hair suits my DD beautifully. His reply was that she is strawberry blonde not ginger! She's as red as it gets!

I am ginger and was a bit surprised to give birth to a blonde DD. I got it right the second and third times though!

DD1 has redeemed herself by marrying a ginger haired man (one of his many fine qualities).

I think your boss was well out of line but I think this can be filed away under 'Bad taste jokes' and forgotten about!

Purplepoodle · 21/05/2015 15:26

Why wouldn't u want your baby to be healthy. Don't we all wish for healthy, doesn't mean we love our children won arnt any less

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/05/2015 15:26

Some people are cunts, OP. perhaps you could come back with "rather a ginger than a bigot"

chocolateyay · 21/05/2015 15:26

And you said...?

Ginger is a root you chop up and above on a stir fry, not a type of person.

silverstreak · 21/05/2015 15:28

Did he say it jokingly?! I know that doesn't completely excuse it anyway but 'gingerism' is pretty widespread and seems to be the last acceptable prejudice in some peoples eyes.... I have ginger in my family and it is a fairly regular source of amusement foot some of my nearest and dearest. I take it in my stride, & mostly use it to my advantage tbh....Us Ginja Ninjas are a formidable force to be reckoned with! :)

EvilTendency1 · 21/05/2015 15:28

What's wrong with 'as long as it's healthy ?' Confused

My dd is a redhead jealous as it's a gorgeous colour and is ALWAYS being complemented on it.

The bloke was a dickhead, ignore him.

Fatstacks · 21/05/2015 15:29

As long as it's healthy?

What about people who have ill babies?

Do they send them back?

traceybaybee · 21/05/2015 15:30

Im more auburn than ginger and due my baby in 3wks and have a laugh i hope he took my ex's hair (dark) but its said in jest i couldnt care what colour he has. I used not to like my hair colour but have grown to love it. And as my gran tells me people dye their hair to become a redhead and yours is natural

helenahandbag · 21/05/2015 15:30

EvilTendency1

I think saying "as long as it's healthy" is a bit off because it's like saying that a child with special needs is sub-par?

Tiredbadger · 21/05/2015 15:31

It's hard to tell if it was jokingly as the conversation was all had on our work instant messenger. But I'll go with the view that everyone else thinks he's an idiot, that's good enough for me. Smile

I dearly hoped for ginger haired kids when I was expecting dd2 and dd3, xh was ginger, and my mother too. Nope. One brunette and one honey blonde. Ah well.
