We need to talk about place marking!

I've noticed that a lot of people particularly on popular "update" threads like parking threads and brass necked person asking for a lift all the time type threads will post with something like "puts kettle on" or even "blatant place marking" so when they go back to the thread they can find "where they were up to last". Presumably this means they can scroll through, see the lavender blush coloured strip and know that is where they are up to.

Fair enough but did you know you can bookmark a thread, which saves you even the hassle of posting and scrolling later?

If you are using "Mumsnet new" (which you can find under the bit that says Mumsnet Talk, and choose Customise (its next to unanswered messages). Once you are using Mumsnet New, all you have to do is go to the last post in a thread, hover your cursor over to the right hand side (sort of near "message poster" "report poster" type area, or just below) and a little "bookmark" prompt will come up and you can click on it.

Then next time you are on the thread, it will boom you straight down to where you left off.

Tis genius...

I have started a thread like this before.

Not many people seemed to have listened Grin

TattyDevine · 19/02/2015 10:59

It might not work on iPads and phones and shiz?

MN Classic doesn't offer bookmarking. Us oldies abhor change

The olde full stoppe is plain rude though.

Sounds amazeballs, but I'm a classic girl, can't get with the new.

It works on phones. If you have time to write about marking your place you have time to make a contribution.

Wailywailywaily · 19/02/2015 11:03

Tis a great idea. Unfortunately my fat thumbs and small phone mean it is almost impossible to click and hover as you suggest.

I agree that place marking is a tad irritating though

gamerchick · 19/02/2015 11:04

Or maybe people like to place mark to see a deletion message sometimes. Doesn't it just vanish if you haven't posted on the thread?

It's a little thing man It doesn't matter.

TattyDevine · 19/02/2015 11:06

I'm not bothered by it or irritated by it - I just figured people didn't realise?

OP posts:
MagratsHair · 19/02/2015 11:06

Sometimes people use it instead of the 'Watch Thread' instead & I'm guilty of this on the mobile site. If I wish to comment on a thread but can't right now then I placemark so I can find the thread more easily later under I'm On, then if the thread is deleted it saves a lot of tiresome searching. I do generally say that on the thread concerned though, I don't just say place marking.

My settings have the OP's posts in lavender & mine are in green :)

Jacana · 19/02/2015 11:07

Hmmm, on my iPad I bookmarked a thread yesterday at p.27(love a good parking thread, me) which has now moved on, but my bookmark seems set there At p.27...don't know how to delete it, even. Anyone help? Atm it seems like that bookmark is stuck there, rather like the blocked-in car Wink

crazykat · 19/02/2015 11:09

It doesn't work on the android app which is what I use for mn.

It's a shame as I've thought about bookmark tool would be brilliant for ages, it's a pita when you post on a thread and then have to scroll all the way through to find your post.

A highlight own posts option, like the highlight op posts, would also be good.

crazykat · 19/02/2015 11:12

I didn't know you could highlight your own posts now, in my defence in haven't used the website or mobile site in years. It would be great to have those options on the apps though.

DameGobshite · 19/02/2015 11:12

Ooh, I've learned something new today! I always assumed that the posts featuring a single 'full stop' were and error and not place marking
That' just rude, that is.

rumbelina · 19/02/2015 11:12

I did not know this, thank you. Does it work on an iphone as that's where I do most of my reading?

It'll be hard Fairenuff when there's a parking thread with 7 updates from the OP and 746 place markers Grin

FruChristerOla · 19/02/2015 11:18

Jacana, when you re-open a thread that you've bookmarked, it will take you to your last bookmark; you can then read the newer posts - and then you can bookmark the last post that you read, which makes your bookmark more up-to-date, IYSWIM?!

(Well, it does for me on a computer - not sure what happens on an iPad, I imagine it works the same way.)

FruChristerOla · 19/02/2015 11:18

X-posted!

middleagedbread · 19/02/2015 11:19

I can't do the bookmark thing but instead, when on phone click on the top righthand side of the screen; four boxes open, one of which says "watch this thread". If I click on that, I can access the thread easily, I just need to click the "watch" icon to get a list of all my "watch " threads. No need to post anything on the thread itself. On laptop, at top and bottom of thread is a "watch" icon. Check out customise because you can highlight your own and the OP 's messages in different colours, also set up so you can scroll through whole thread with no pages getting in the way.

Fairenuff · 19/02/2015 11:20

I just think some people like to have the thread in TIO rather than having to go to a separate place to see the ones they're 'watching'. It does help to have the OP's posts highlighted so that you can easily scroll to an update.

Also, if no-one place marks and everyone just lurks, you don't get that 'party' atmosphere with people passing round food and drinks and eventually chatting about other stuff while they wait for an update.

It's a bit dull otherwise. I like all the bookmarking posts. And the OP might not bother coming back if they think no-one's interested.

Fairenuff · 19/02/2015 11:20

It's there OP! Right at the top of most active Grin
