We need to talk about place marking!

I've noticed that a lot of people particularly on popular "update" threads like parking threads and brass necked person asking for a lift all the time type threads will post with something like "puts kettle on" or even "blatant place marking" so when they go back to the thread they can find "where they were up to last". Presumably this means they can scroll through, see the lavender blush coloured strip and know that is where they are up to.

Fair enough but did you know you can bookmark a thread, which saves you even the hassle of posting and scrolling later?

If you are using "Mumsnet new" (which you can find under the bit that says Mumsnet Talk, and choose Customise (its next to unanswered messages). Once you are using Mumsnet New, all you have to do is go to the last post in a thread, hover your cursor over to the right hand side (sort of near "message poster" "report poster" type area, or just below) and a little "bookmark" prompt will come up and you can click on it.

Then next time you are on the thread, it will boom you straight down to where you left off.

Tis genius...

I had to turn on this option even though I was using New it was switched off - on the customise page its one of the options at the bottom of the page.

I dont place mark but remembering where I was is a bit of a pain!

Fairenuff · 19/02/2015 11:39

Bookmarking is a fantastic facility. So much so that it was awful when techies lost it for a few days.

Tatty too early for wine but I have hot, fresh coffee and lemon drizzle cake.

YouTheCat · 19/02/2015 11:42

It was awful, Faire. Terrible.

It is so handy. I use it on troll threads and if I don't want to contribute, I use the watch thread facility.

I use it on other threads too.

grannycake · 19/02/2015 11:47

Thank you. I have been trying to bookmark for ages but could never work it out. Very clear instructions OP

CuttedUpPear · 19/02/2015 11:59
Brew
Kleptronic · 19/02/2015 12:02

How do I bookmark on my ios phone then please?

Immovableobject · 19/02/2015 12:03

OK, bookmarking is great on my laptop but I use the android app on tablet and phone and can't seem to find any suitable options - the three dots at the top bring up Watching but that still seems to dump me at the start of the thread...

RedSoloCup · 19/02/2015 12:03

Excellent instructions thank you (I also had to turn on despite already using MN new).

maccie · 19/02/2015 12:06

I use the app and I miss bookmarking so muchHmm

I am not very techy but could it not be added to that little arrow on each post that gives you the option to send a private message or report the thread ?

I thought bookmarking was a feature that was supposed to be on the way but I have been using the app for ages now and I still can't find a way to do it.

It's the only thing that could make me love mumsnet moreWink

Jacana · 19/02/2015 12:11

Correction! It is never too early for Wine. It's now mid-day and officially aperitif timeGrin

I've not yet tried to update my bookmarked thread, got visions of having a page of bookmarked places for the same thread and I still don't know how to permanently delete. I used to just 'watch this thread' ..why oh why didn't I just stick with that? This hi-tech world leaves me permanently bemused. Permanently sozzled tooGrin

RedHairDontCare · 19/02/2015 12:11

I had seen someone post about this before and couldn't find the button, have only just realised that you need to turn it on in customise. This could possibly change my life.

Cake for you OP

MooMaid · 19/02/2015 12:14

Oooh I've also just found and changed my settings - thanks OP!

CuttedUpPear · 19/02/2015 13:28

On the app so not able to do anything other than indicate I'm settled down with a Brew waiting for things to develop/ intending to return with relevant comments.

maccie · 19/02/2015 13:33

I will join you cutteduppear for a ?? Whilst we wait for the revolution to happen and give us bookmarking abilities on the app

QOD · 19/02/2015 14:01

Wedges arse in to mark spot

Wink
allypally999 · 19/02/2015 15:24

I don't see the bookmark thing but I did find you can highlight your own and the OP's responses Grin thanks for that!

Mandatorymongoose · 19/02/2015 17:18

I'm on the android app, so no book marking and no handy post highlighting and no pictures Sad . I wish they'd hurry up and release the new version they've been promising forever which I'm hoping will include all these useful things.

toomuchtooold · 19/02/2015 17:50

That is probably a few too many.new steps for me OP. I don't even know if I am on new or classic. I can't actually remember my login or the email address I registered with so if one of my kids trashes my phone like they did my last one I'll probably be off of here for about 6 months till I get round to registering.

(Imagines resulting productivity gain)
(Hands phone to toddler)

CointreauVersial · 19/02/2015 17:56

Well, for a moment there I was quite excited....until I realised that I usually use the Android app, so it doesn't apply.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 19/02/2015 17:59

I came out in a cold sweat when the bookmark buggered off earlier this week, I'd be lost without it.

cate16 · 19/02/2015 18:17

Well I'm going to crack open the wine.. This is all a wonderful revelation for me :)

MissDuke · 19/02/2015 18:21

I can't find it :-(

maccie · 19/02/2015 18:27

What if we start a petition to the mumsnet powers that be ?

The app NEEDS bookmarks and coloured highlighting. If we fill a thread up to 1000 with signatures do you think it could persuade them ?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 19/02/2015 18:28

Go to customise.
Scroll down the page nearly to the bottom and it says about bookmarking thereabouts.
