To not flush every time I use the loo?

Dh thinks it's disgusting that if we're all, (me, dh, ds, dd,) heading out somewhere and all using the loo just before we go, that I prefer us not to flush the loo after each wee. My reasoning is that an awful lot of water is being wasted with the loo being flushed 4 times in about 2 mins. His argument is that it's just plain to disgusting to wee on top of someone else's wee! So...who is right?!

I assume that 'here' is not the UK Midnite. I'm guessing Australia? So the rainwater toilet system is possible? Does the rainwater tank outlast a drought?

I know that we have rainwater fed toilets at our Forestry Centres, but they are run by people concerned about the environment and conservation, may not be close to mains water and are generally in an area of extremely high rainfall, which keeps small tanks on the roof topped up. I would expect that most people on this thread would find flushing their toilet with 'dirty' rainwater disgusting.

This thread is just another example of how ridiculously spoilt we are in the UK with mostly cheap, unrestricted access to clean drinking water to a level that lots of people think it 'disgusting' to ever think about not wasting it.

How would those people get on in countries that don't have such free access to water? Would they go round proclaiming the locals 'disgusting' for using composting toilets, or following a very sensible 'if its yellow, let it mellow' mantra?

And I don't see how weeing in a running shower is disgusting. It just gets washed away and massively diluted.

I, for one wouldn't get on very well, which is why I chose not to go abroad.
I wouldn't say I'm spoilt by living in the uk and having access to clean water, lucky maybe?
And no matter where I lived and how short of water I was i would never find it acceptable to wee in the shower. Would you stand in a pissy toilet if you needed to wash you feet? To me that amounts to the same.

FaithLoveandGrace · 13/01/2015 14:47

I personally see how you can compare peeing in the shower to standing in a wee filled toilet given that the water is running and you then wash your feet with clean water from the shower. I personally don't see the point given we don't flush every time and would be wasting more water in the time it takes to stand there and pee.

The idea of grey water should be more readily available though it's still being researched so perhaps when our children / grandchildren are older it'll be a more widespread and acceptable idea.

I personally cant see I meant to say.

Lifesalemon · 13/01/2015 14:56

Just meant that to me, a toilet is for weeing in and a shower is for washing in and I would rather keep the two seperate. I wouldn't want to wash in the toilet so why would I want to wee in the shower.

I don't flush if I pee in the middle of the night (alarmingly frequent, but I digress) and if DP and I both need at the same time I insist he doesn't flush as I go straight after him and flush when I'm done.

FaithLoveandGrace · 13/01/2015 14:59

Ahh I understand now - thanks for clarifying.

My friend pees in the shower. I was grossed out at first but now I've gotten used to the idea I'm not really that bothered. DSS (who's 5) has weed in the bath a few times and then proceeded to drink the water before we 1. Realised he'd peed and 2. could stop him drinking it - now that is just gross!

Water meter here, so yellow mellow or enormous bills.

I wonder if you'd have got that advert if you'd said that not flushing was disgusting Wizard?
