To not flush every time I use the loo?

ScarlettDarling · 11/01/2015 21:20

Dh thinks it's disgusting that if we're all, (me, dh, ds, dd,) heading out somewhere and all using the loo just before we go, that I prefer us not to flush the loo after each wee. My reasoning is that an awful lot of water is being wasted with the loo being flushed 4 times in about 2 mins. His argument is that it's just plain to disgusting to wee on top of someone else's wee! So...who is right?!

We never flush wees in the night. It used to be because it occasionally woke DCs up in the early hours, but now it's because DCs wake us up with their nocturnal toilet visits. If we need to go immediately after each other then we wouldn't flush in between.

However other than that. The toilet is flushed after each use.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 12/01/2015 07:20

Very wasteful to flush every time in the situation you describe. I don't flush at night or if I am at home alone for a few hours, after wees.

We are incredibly lucky and spoilt in this country that we have such free access to clean drinking water. It's madness that we use so much of it flushing toilets. Grey water or rain water plumbing should be more widespread instead of niche.

I dont have a meter but my parents have one and I used to when I rented and it seriously did not make a significant amount to my bills flushing all the time esp if you use the water saver bags in the tank. Each to their own I suppose.

ChocolateOranges · 12/01/2015 08:18

The thought of finding old wee in the loo when I go to use it makes me feel nauseous.

We didn't used to flush at night but then found after all four of us had been at night the toilet was full of loo roll, which then tended to block with the first flush in the morning. So I flush at night now so that we won't get the build -up in the morning. Night time wee seems to be more smelly & yellow too.

Hatespiders · 12/01/2015 11:35

We're on a water meter. Our loo has a choice of 2 flushes. One is a veritable cascade and the other just a quick squirt. During the night and after just a wee, we use the minimal flush button. Anything else gets the cascade! But I wouldn't ever leave a wee totally unflushed.

GraceFox · 12/01/2015 11:42

Dh and I don't flush wees overnight. We put lid down afterwards and I can assure you there's no smell, unless one of us has eaten asparagus...Smile

Lucyccfc · 12/01/2015 11:47

We always flush after every visit to the toilet, however there's only 2 of us, so we do check if the other one needs the toilet, so we don't have to flush twice.

Hatespiders · 12/01/2015 11:50

What we all need is one of those Tudor Houses of Easement. A long row of seats where you can all wee/poo together and be chummy. "How's your boy, Mrs Sprout?" "Not too bad Mr Twig. Are your piles better today dear?" etc.
Then when everyone gets up, the one on the end flushes the whole thing.

peggyundercrackers · 12/01/2015 11:54

yabu - piss stinks. don't believe everything you read on the internet either...

Lifesalemon · 12/01/2015 11:59

We are on a water meter and I wouldn't ever not flush after every wee and I would be annoyed at anyone else who used my loo without flushing it.
I've never heard of the yellow mellow thing, I was brought up with 'don't forget to flush and then wash your hands' echoing in my ears from being old enough to go on my own.

PuppyMonkey · 12/01/2015 12:04

Never start a thread about toilets on MN, have you learned nothing? Grin

Fwiw, I say if it's yellow let it mellow , if it's brown flush it down.

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 12/01/2015 12:08

YANBU. We're on restricted water due to drought, so only flushing after no.2 as scared we will run out of water!

HighwayDragon · 12/01/2015 12:09

yabu. What if you need a poo? Do you shit on other peoples piss? what about splashback?

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 12/01/2015 12:15

Tbh I don't care about splash back, I would rather have drinking water and water to put out fires (complete fire ban in our region due to dryness and lack of water) so it pales in comparison. But then I'm at work all day and just dd at home.

Hatespiders · 12/01/2015 12:15

You can get a cistern block thing (like a brick) to stick in the cistern, which limits how much water is needed to fill it. That way you can flush to your heart's content, as it uses much less water.

LilMissSunshine9 · 12/01/2015 21:13

To be honest if I was restricted on water due to a drought than that is an entirely different situation and would have to do things differently.

But you know for those who don't flush would you wee in the shower in the morning - only because that would save you flushing.

ScarlettDarling · 12/01/2015 21:33

Oh now LilMiss...weeing in the shower really is disgusting!!
And no, I wouldn't poo on top of someone else's wee, would be frightened of splashes!

OP posts:
LilMissSunshine9 · 12/01/2015 21:43

Well I don't understand why weeing in the shower is disgusting then (not that I do this) because the wee gets washed away by the water you use for showering.....followed by the shampoo and soap suds....

ThursdayLast · 13/01/2015 07:11

As ever, the squeamishness of some grown women is making me chuckle.

Honestly

HamishBamish · 13/01/2015 07:30

YANBU. If I go to the loo in the night, I don't flush as it's right next to the children's bedrooms and would wake them. I tend to flush every time during the day though, out of habit really.

BadLad · 13/01/2015 11:14

The thought of finding old wee in the loo when I go to use it makes me feel nauseous.

I agree with this.

piss stinks

and this.

Nancy66 · 13/01/2015 11:16

just flush the fucking toilet. It's horrible not to. I'm guessing the non flushers are also the once-a-month sheet washers

MidniteScribbler · 13/01/2015 11:26

When you have lived on tank water during a drought at almost $500 for a load of water, then a bit of pee mellowing in the toilet is no big deal at all.

Most councils here now require a rainwater tank (at least 5000 litres) plumbed to toilets and outdoor taps for every new build home (and any renovations that involve a new bathroom).
