They should all be shot.

See also: chewmeric, cardamon, and cummin.

Yes I know this is unreasonable. Especially for cummin.

QuinnTwinny · 06/01/2015 22:43

Theimpossiblegirl - Am I being thick, what was she asking for?! It's driving me insane!

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 22:46

Ky-enn, I can handle. Ky-ann, out come the rifles. Sad

Ciabatta?

Fishandjam · 06/01/2015 22:47

My absolute hate - and I know IABU for getting so riled by it - is pronouncing "chocolatier" as "chock-lat-eer". Like a musketeer for cocoa products. Lindt adverts especially bad for this. I don't know why I loathe it so much, but I really, really do.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 22:51

I don't mind the anglicisation of chocolatier. Shocolatteeyay would strike me as just being too much like hard work. What I don't understand is why/how lingerie has become longzheray. I begin to doubt myself - shouldn't it be lanzheree or thereabouts?

Croissant. 22yo and still not sure I'm pronouncing it right

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 22:56

Solve all pronunciation problems and piss off the French at the same time by calling it a cornetto Smile

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say consoomer. I'm sure I say conshumer. Like asshume (assume) and preshume (presume) unless it's more of a zh type sound and I can't hear it properly.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 23:05

Consyumer and assyume are going the same way as syoot and syootable. I can't remember what it's called but it's apparently normal for things like tyoob to become toob or choob and consyume to become consoom or conshoom (apologies for horrendous fernettiks).

OP posts:
Poofus · 06/01/2015 23:05

I have never heard any of those, Camolips! Asshume, really?

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 23:06

And duel becomes dooel or jewel.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 23:09

I don't know anyone under under the age of about eighty who says syootcase. Presoomably I will sound similarly old-fashioned when I am eighty and everyone reads/mind-vapes the nooz instead of the news Grin

The mis-pronunciation may be due to Porsche - they use Kye-ann when talking about their 4x4, the Cayenne and the car's been around a while now, so might have moved into common parlance that way?

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 23:16

4x4 Porsche Grin

You're welcome. :)

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 23:26

I guess that's following the French pronunciation, since it's a French word, but I'd have split it into ca and yenne, not cay and enne. Fair enough: kay-enn is out, ky-enn is in I'm still going to say kay-enn.

Still not bloody ann on the end, though, is it? Grin

OP posts:
MoonlightandRoses · 06/01/2015 23:28

SwedishEdith · 06/01/2015 23:37

I was randomly picked on tonight because of the way I pronounce coin. I've just realised it's remarkably like cayenne.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 23:43
