They should all be shot.

See also: chewmeric, cardamon, and cummin.

Yes I know this is unreasonable. Especially for cummin.

Why do people pronounce Chorizo like they've suddenly forgot how to speak. People on CDWM are the worst for it.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 22:13

Cheyenne is shy-ann. Cayenne is a completely unrelated word Confused

Weird pronunciations do sometimes seem to take off, though - I'm still not sure how to pronounce biopic.

I think the reason I find kye-ann really only very mildly annoying is what a PP mentioned about snobs and chorizo, thinking they're being clever by using a more "correct" pronunciation that's actually wrong. And then the rest of us get confused and the rot spreads, like Virginia says Grin

Mmm, warm, woolly, knitted Greek pastries.

Erm how would one prn baklava, please. Asking for a friend if ya catch me drift ofc.

TheOnlyWayThrough · 06/01/2015 22:14

I think the turmeric mispronunciation comes from seeing it misspelled as tumeric. I know I've seen it like that somewhere (possibly a recipe book, although clearly not a very good one!) and pronounced it wrong Blush.

It grates me when TV chefs say creme patisserie instead of creme patissiere

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/01/2015 22:14

Biopic, thats Bi-op-ic, surely?

serendipityspeaks · 06/01/2015 22:15

In my company, as long as you don't say 'pacific' when saying 'specific', you won't irritate the shit out of me.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 22:16

I want to know how to pronounce balaclava baklava too. Is it BAK-la-va?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/01/2015 22:16

Serendipity, are you friends with Del Boy?

WowserBowser · 06/01/2015 22:17

But macarons and macaroons are different things (despite what my spellcheck might think)

Yes - so Macarons is correct - it isn't a pronunciation error. If used in the right context.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 06/01/2015 22:17

Dandy tell your friend it's pronounced back-la-va if that makes sense? Rather than ba-clarva. Just YouTube it lol

WowserBowser · 06/01/2015 22:18

Brought/bought - that is one that irritates the shit out of me.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 22:18

I thought that Tali, then I noticed people saying bio-pic, like a shortened BIOgraphicalPICture. But it still sounds odd to me and in my head I'm thinking "biOPPic". So I just avoid saying it now Grin

GlitzAndGigglesx · 06/01/2015 22:19

serendipityspeaks oh that really grinds my gears!

WowserBowser · 06/01/2015 22:19

Alexander and Richard say BIO-PIC so that is what I believe to be correct Grin

Pontouf · 06/01/2015 22:19

Now see biopic is a portmanteau so I think it should be bio-pic, rather than bi-op-ic.

serendipityspeaks · 06/01/2015 22:20

Tali - I wouldn't pacifically call us friends...

QuinnTwinny · 06/01/2015 22:20

My sister pronounce Ceylon tea and Sale-on tea. Drives me bonkers! Think she does it to wind me up now...

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/01/2015 22:20

Grand, according to Wiki, we are right and everything one else is wrong.

KatoPotato · 06/01/2015 22:21

So what is a macaron? What is a macaroon?

Taffeta · 06/01/2015 22:22

I take your chorizo and I raise you Prosecco.

There is no h in it.

GrandTheftQuarto · 06/01/2015 22:22

On the other hand, Tali, Alexander and Richard can never be wrong Wink

OP posts:
TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/01/2015 22:22

Where did that stray thing come from.

simbacatlivesagain · 06/01/2015 22:23

A macaroon is like a cow pat made from coconut

A macaron is a highly coloured french meringue type pretentious thing

DandyHighwayman · 06/01/2015 22:23

Glitz my FRIEND says thank you vair much Wink

Taffeta · 06/01/2015 22:24

Macarons are French ickle meringuey sandwich thingies
Macaroons are big clumsy coconut thingies

I think
