Lobsters

My OH has brought home 2 live lobsters, expecting me to kill and cook them.

I am freaking out. I looked in to their little lobster eyes and they seemed to be saying "Please don't kill us, just put us back in the sea."

I can hear them moving about in the kitchen.

I told him to do it himself but he thinks I am being unreasonable. AIBU for not wanting to kill and cook them?

Shocked at people saying it's wussy to want to kill an animal humanely!

Latest research shoes lobsters have more ability to feel pain/suffer than originally thought.

To kill humanely you need to cut through main nerve quickly with sharp knife. If you can't do it yourself take to fishmonger or restaurant to ask chef to do it.

Don't boil them alive - that's awful Confused

longestlurkerever · 07/11/2014 07:50

No one said it was wussy to want to kill them humanely!

Leela5 · 07/11/2014 07:54

Someone up the thread did, said just stick them in boiling water. None of you ladies on recent posts Smile

I am chuckling at the transition from lobster cooking to sticking fingers up bums for fun. Only on MN Grin

I used to work with kids taking them out to farms to see where their food comes from. I think it is really important folk are prepared to know how food gets to them and understand the process. I'm veggie but have visited abattoirs for work and it's very interesting to see. If I did eat meat I would want to know how it was reared and killed so that I knew it was given a good life and killed humanely. I buy meat for my dh. A lot of the meat sold in supermarkets is from abroad where standards are not high but sometimes it's hard to tell which is which.

JessieMcJessie · 07/11/2014 08:04

Nope, I didn't say that humane killing was wussy. I am not particularly fussed about fannying around stabbing them first and all that, but can see why some might want to. I actually think that stabbing them is braver than just chicking them in the water. The wusses I referred to are the people who are squealing about the horror of having live lobsters in the house, having to kill them at all, saying they'd take them back to the ocean etc.

Leela5 · 07/11/2014 08:07

I see! I am with you on that one. If you plan to eat them then yes I agree.

Leela5 · 07/11/2014 08:09

Wtf? I didn't do strike through there! Thanks MN app for that!

Yes I agree!

trufflesnout · 07/11/2014 12:44

What did you do OP?

Or maybe they are simply vegetarians? Hmm

My ex is a chef, turned up to a new years eve party about 1am after finishing service with a live lobster in his coat pocket. He put it in the freezer at the hosts house overnight (friend of a friend, I didn't know her that well, ex had never met her) then put it in my handbag to travel home on the tube the next day.

there are so many reasons why this man is my ex...

JackSkellington · 07/11/2014 15:45

What happened to the lobsters, OP?

My BIL was a lobster fisherman, I can dispatch and cook lobsters with ease.
