Lobsters

My OH has brought home 2 live lobsters, expecting me to kill and cook them.

I am freaking out. I looked in to their little lobster eyes and they seemed to be saying "Please don't kill us, just put us back in the sea."

I can hear them moving about in the kitchen.

I told him to do it himself but he thinks I am being unreasonable. AIBU for not wanting to kill and cook them?

The fisherman won't return them. He'll take them home and torture drop them into boiling water Shock

HesterShaw · 05/11/2014 17:36

Blimey, Stroke do you live on Christmas Island?

BitchesGetStuffDone · 05/11/2014 17:38

Yeah, realised that after I posted Blush
Will have to make OH swim out with them then!

Just put them into some rocks near the water and they'll decide what they need to do. They'll be so relieved to have their lives back.

BitchesGetStuffDone · 05/11/2014 17:40

Good god, strokethefurrywall, I would have a heart attack if a lobster or crab tapped on my window! Having a hard enough time with them scuttling about in their boxes all creepy like.

Where are you OP? I have a dinghy if you are anywhere in the very far west?

PinkAndBlueBedtimeScares · 05/11/2014 17:41

I'd give them to your dh and tell him to deal with them. Either kill them or take them to the sea.. If you don't eat the thing there's no way he should expect you to do his dirty work!

Strokethefurrywall · 05/11/2014 17:46

No Hester, Cayman Islands - lovely Caribbean lobster here which I don't tend to eat it regularly and lobster season runs 1 Dec - 1 Feb so there are some pretty big specimens out there.

But crabs freak the shit out of me. They're pretty big so if you hit one with the car it takes some cleaning to get the shit out of the fender. And they're land crabs too so eat total crab, live on stuff out the bins. People do catch and eat them, but keep them for a couple of months feeding them vegetables and lettuce to clean the meat up, otherwise it tastes how you'd imagine something that's been eating the contents of a dumpster to taste.

But then some people here eat iguanas too so I raise my eyebrows at both those delightful entrees.

Do feel sorry for the lobsters though, poor ugly bastards.

Icantwaituntilxmas · 05/11/2014 17:51

Free the lobsters!!! Grin

Chippednailvarnish · 05/11/2014 17:51

Do feel sorry for the lobsters though, ugly tasty bastards

BitchesGetStuffDone · 05/11/2014 17:52

Have just watched a video of swarming land crabs and feel alarmed and disgusted.

Get drunk first, although it does mean that you won't be able to enjoy tasty fresh lobster quite as much.

BitchesGetStuffDone · 05/11/2014 17:54

Get the lobsters drunk? Or myself?

GallbladderFairy · 05/11/2014 17:56

I think, given the distress they are probably on from being caught etc, if you put them back in the sea now they would probably still die.
If you are not going to eat them and your dh is, then your dh should deal with them.

eyestightshut · 05/11/2014 18:01

holy shit - just googled land crabs - I am NEVER going to the Cayman Islands. only for the brave

googoodolly · 05/11/2014 18:06

I do find it pretty ridiculous how people want to free these lobsters, but are happy to eat meat and fish in restaurants and bought from supermarkets. What's the difference? Lobsters killed by a spear through the neck (instant death) are killed far more humanely than any animal in your average abbatoir.

bigbluestars · 05/11/2014 18:07

I have witnessed these land crabs migrating in the tropics too. You can see thousands of them them scuttle out of the corner of your eye, but they are watching. THe minute you turn your head to watch they stop en masse.
Very unsettling. Not sure what they taste like though.

Chippednailvarnish · 05/11/2014 18:15

That's not a crab, this is a crab

Andrewofgg · 05/11/2014 18:25

Chipped Put a big pan of water on the boil and set an extra place, I'm hungry now . . .

Chippednailvarnish · 05/11/2014 18:28

I was thinking grilled with soy sauce, spring onions and garlic...

longestlurkerever · 05/11/2014 18:29

If you eat meat you shouldn't be thst squeamish about a lobster being killed. But I agree dh should do it if he brought them home without consultation.

Surreyblah · 05/11/2014 18:29

Sounds like they're doomed whatever you do now, but this is your H's problem to deal with.

longestlurkerever · 05/11/2014 18:30

Ps they are delicious grilled with butter or lime and chilli

longestlurkerever · 05/11/2014 18:31

Or steamed!

Chippednailvarnish · 05/11/2014 18:31

Mmm, grilled with butter.
