Lobsters

My OH has brought home 2 live lobsters, expecting me to kill and cook them.

I am freaking out. I looked in to their little lobster eyes and they seemed to be saying "Please don't kill us, just put us back in the sea."

I can hear them moving about in the kitchen.

I told him to do it himself but he thinks I am being unreasonable. AIBU for not wanting to kill and cook them?

lemisscared That document says freezing is acceptable. I'm so glad we're kosher and don't have to deal with things like this.

To kill 2 birds with one stone...

This is the Mumsnet pet thread

I did a cookery course a while ago and the teacher demonstrated how to kill a couple of crabs. The actual despatch of the first one was quick but the trouble was that number 2 had clearly sussed out what was happening and tried to make a break for it. I am a dyed-in-the-wool carnivore but it was pretty upsetting.

They mate for life (ahhhhh).

meglet · 05/11/2014 20:39

You can't just pop them on the beach. They won't scuttle into the sea like baby turtles.

Then again, your DH can't take a boat out at this time of night. You can just imagine the RNLI being called out for the weirdo who got into trouble returning 2 lobsters to the sea Grin.

werewolfinladderedtights · 05/11/2014 20:51

They mate for life you know. Poor lobsters

fruitloopsandfruitshoots · 06/11/2014 08:29

What did you do with them in the end op?

whois · 06/11/2014 08:37

Well, I suppose, if you've eaten lobster in the past, you ought to be prepared to kill it yourself. Similarly, those getting anxious at the thought of suffering lobsters should probably acknowledge the general levels of suffering going on in the average abattoir. If you want to eat meat, you should, in my view, be prepared to kill and prepare it yourself. It's a bit hypocritical otherwise.

I could not agree more.

sunflower49 · 06/11/2014 08:44

Me too whois.

If my DP did this I would MAKE yes MAKE, him take them back to where he got them from. and then ltb

Poor things :(

Ememem84 · 06/11/2014 09:04

i always thought that you were supposed to put them in the freezer before popping them in the pot... learned something today.

When we were kids, we used to have lobster all the time, and I think that my dad (lobster fisherman) just threw them in the pot alive, with garlic. and onion and a bay leaf.

Once they're done we usually pop them on the BBQ with some chilli and butter.

I know this doesn't help your situation, but it might help once you've gotten past the killing bit. (or serve them with linguini, olive oil and chilli and garlic.yummm)

can i come for tea...

TheIronGnome · 06/11/2014 11:11

Load of nonsense to say if you can't kill it, you shouldn't eat it. There's loads of jobs people 'can't' or 'won't' do- doesn't mean they aren't allowed to benefit from the result of it.

Many, many carnivores humans wouldn't/couldn't kill an animal, of course it doesn't mean they shouldn't eat it if someone else is happy to.

I wouldn't want to eat crab or lobster though, nor would I want to kill them- I'd rather be as far away from them at all times! What happened in the end op?

DinoSnores · 06/11/2014 11:18

You are supposed to freeze them first. That is the most humane way.

kb.rspca.org.au/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-kill-lobsters-and-other-crustaceans_79.html

Recommended methods
2.1 The most acceptable method of killing crustaceans is to effectively chill the
animal to render it insensible, followed by killing through splitting or spiking
to destroy the animal’s nerve centres.
2.2 Chilling in air
Crustaceans are ‘cold blooded’ animals. When their temperature is reduced
their activity slows and eventually they become insensible. Chilling should
preferably be carried out in air (in a refrigerator or freezer) at a temperature
below 4ºC. The length of time required will vary across species and
conditions but chilling must be maintained until the animal appears
insensible (see 2.4) before further processing. This method produces
insensibility without causing osmotic shock (rupture of cells due to a sudden
increase in water content through osmosis). Chilling in air at deep freeze
temperatures (minus 15ºC or lower) for longer periods will result in the
eventual death of the animal.

JessieMcJessie · 06/11/2014 12:03

Oh for goodness sake just boil a pan of water and chuck them in! They will be dead in seconds, and are delicious. And yes, I have done this myself many times.

I am truly astonished at the levels of wussiness displayed on this thread.

Andrewofgg · 06/11/2014 13:27

Exactly IronGnome - Those of us who don't want to work in the sewers still don't hesitate to flush the loo!

whois · 06/11/2014 13:32

Exactly IronGnome - Those of us who don't want to work in the sewers still don't hesitate to flush the loo!

But if you did a big fuck off log poo which wouldn't flush, I assume you would deal with it and not have to call out a poo man?

People who don't like to think about the cute leaping lambs or the big doe eyed cows (or lovely lobsters) ending up on their dinner plate have no business eating meat.

fluffyraggies · 06/11/2014 13:46

Why? I don't get all this 'why cant you do it yourself if you like meat?'

I like to go to the docs when i don't feel well but i don't want to be a GP Confused

TheIronGnome · 06/11/2014 14:39

'No business eating meat'?! Wtf?! I struggle to get any logic from this- at all.

Industry is based around people doing jobs for each other which they don't want to do themselves- in exchange for money. Why is meat production any different?

No, I don't like to think of cute cuddly animals being slaughtered, nor do I really like to hunk about milk coming out of a cows udders, or eggs coming out of chicken's bottoms. But it's a food chain and all of those things are delicious.

I don't really want to grow my own veg either, bit tricky without a garden...

LilAnnieAmphetamine · 06/11/2014 14:45

When you read how they court - they lay side by side, caressing up and down each others bodies then mate for hours AND they can be devoted parents....makes it hard to eat them.

limitedperiodonly · 06/11/2014 14:52

There's no room in my bathtub for lobsters because it's occupied by

whois · 06/11/2014 14:59

Yes they are. But you should have thought about the implications of the food chain, and be ok with it.

Not just ignore the problem because you like the taste.

I don't think everyone should go and work in an abattoir, but you do need to be ethically comfortable with the idea of cute fluffy lamb death if you like to eat it. It's irresponsible and lazy to just ignore the issue.

Anyway OP - what did you do in the end?

Chippednailvarnish · 06/11/2014 15:38

When you read how they court - they lay side by side, caressing up and down each others bodies then mate for hours AND they can be devoted parents....makes it hard to eat them

It might do for you, but I certainly don't have a problem with it.

kali110 · 06/11/2014 16:32

D aet them free, mind you i don't eat anything like that!I couldn't eat crab or lobster as you're never sure if they've just been shoved in the pan alive.that's just cruel.
I think that is just horrendous.think they should atleast be put in the freezer for a while first.
Yes i eat meat and I'm under no illusions at what happens at abattoirs as i have been too one.
They have to follow strict guidelines too make it as humane as possible, it's a shame it doesn't extend to crabs and lobsters too.

I think those land crabs are awesome!
I found a huge spider crab one year!
Do come back and tell us what you did op!
