Over the last day and a half I've felt increasingly awful. My joints ache and it hurts when I breathe deeply or when I sneeze or cough. Even a little jolt hurts. It's in my back and left shoulder....could it be pleurisy? What are the signs?

I will see GP tomrorrow if not bettee.

I've had it twice since february. Its not viral with me. I get pain in the top of my lung, at the front to start with but it travels to my back. I get very, very breathless (need oxygen).

Only once have I had the extreme pain associated with it , its like having contractions.

Mendeleyev · 16/09/2014 21:57

I had terrible flu like symptoms some of the time, but a lot of the time just terrible chest pain that knocked me off my feet. Took ages to diagnose. I think I had it on and off for 6-8 months. It wasn't til I presented at the Dr with the flu and pain at the same time that it was diagnosed.

TheGonnagle · 16/09/2014 22:01

It really hurts and breathing in gets quickly more painful and difficult. Really sore lungs, and I rattle with it too.

Go to the doctor

MrsWinnibago · 16/09/2014 22:01

Oh I am in such bloody pain. I want not to take the DC to school in morning as it means a 2 mile bike there and the same back. I might have t o bully DH into it...means he will be late for work but I really don't think I can manage. :( I am in agony!I've had pain killers too.

I had it, and it hurt viciously when breathing, moving etc. Nasty stabbing pain just below one boob. It woke me in the night and I thought I might be having a heart attack or a stroke. I was pg so could only treat with rest and paracetamol.

Ghastly it was. Hope you don't have it. It's left me with a weak chest (very old fashioned I know) and I now get bronchitis regularly if I'm not super careful with coughs and colds.

mineofuselessinformation · 16/09/2014 22:07

Get yourself to a doctor ASAP. Pleurisy is truly horrible. But even if it isn't, it sounds like you have a nasty infection which you need to get on top of.

Topaz25 · 16/09/2014 22:08

Definitely see the doctor, my dad had that a few times and it's awful. Symptoms were sharp pain on breathing in and shortness of breath. I hope you feel better soon x

greathat · 16/09/2014 22:11

I had pneumonia with pleurisy once. I thought it was flu so put off going to docs. It had got pretty bad by the time I actually went - hospitalised on IV antibiotics. Get to the docs! These things need checking out

Trickydecision · 16/09/2014 22:15

Had pleurisy once and pneumonia twice. Pleurisy far more painful, go to the docs.

FunkyBoldRibena · 16/09/2014 22:18

I couldn't even walk to the end of the road without collapsing when I had it - never mind a bike ride!

Horrendous and very painful.

Topaz25 · 16/09/2014 22:19

Don't get on a bike! Don't try and power through this, tell your DH you are really ill.

Topaz25 · 16/09/2014 22:21

Forgot to mention my dad had to go to hospital when he had pleurisy, although he did have other breathing problems, which complicated it. It's not to be taken lightly, please see a doctor and get some rest.

DancingDinosaur · 16/09/2014 22:25

You might have. My dh had it a while ago. I remember the GP who came out to him saying something about pain in the back and down the left side being a symptom. No idea why the left and not the right. But I'd get checked out. Dh wasn't diagnosed for a week or two and he became really unwell and confused. Bad memories.

DancingDinosaur · 16/09/2014 22:26

Definitely don't get on the bike.

wanttosinglikemarycoughlan · 16/09/2014 22:29

I had terrible back and shoulder pain which went down my arm
It was such a physical pain that I thought at first that I had broken my arm
Is horrible agree with others don't try to ride a bike

nocoolnamesleft · 16/09/2014 23:13

When I had pleuritic chest pain, I thought I'd call my gp in the morning. By 6am I'd given up and was in A&E. Where they took one look at me and took me into resus... definitely worth getting checked out!

Isseyesque · 16/09/2014 23:29

Pleurisy feels like a ripping pain in your chest when you cough, it is beyond awful. It hurts so much you feel like you are going to pass out. It is an infection of the lung lining, so when you cough you lung jolts and it excruciating. When I had it, they first checked me by X-ray for a collapsed lung. Then I had antibiotics the size of bullets. It was much worse than a chest infection, but the pain was clearly located in the lung/chest, and not the back/shoulder. Definitely go to GP and get checked out.

giraffescantboogie · 16/09/2014 23:56

How odd I just posted a thread about it! Was in hosp Sun night with this.

I have a chronic lung disease anyway so I wasn't sure if it was that playing up or something else.

Am on antibiotics, codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen.

And I want to bash myself on head with a hammer to stop the pain.

giraffescantboogie · 16/09/2014 23:57

Sootgremlin · 17/09/2014 00:15

Yes I had this, woke up with a sharp pain in the back, thought I'd pulled a muscle at first but it just got worse, every movement was excruciating. I didn't have any other symptoms of cold or flu, just sudden and debilitating pain in the upper back and chest.

Don't do anything you don't need to, you must rest.

lavenderhoney · 17/09/2014 00:24

Yes, when I was 17. Cold, then flu, then pneumonia, then the real deal- pleurisy. Collapsed in agony from pain. Couldn't breathe. All happened very fast.

Flat on my back for a month, couldn't sit up without agonising pains, coughing ( and coughing hurt a lot) no hair washing, baths, no open windows, ( deep snow outside, awful cold air for lung problems) could hardly breathe with the pain. I couldn't sit up as the pain was too much. I was suppose to be in hospital but lucky enough to be allowed home with a nurse.

There are two types, the lining in your lungs is affected- you have to be very very careful.

AlpacaLypse · 17/09/2014 00:35

My mother had it just after the War.

Major hospital job and months off school.

OOH doctor or even 999 if you haven't already Mrs W. From my knowledge of you as a regular poster you're not normally a worrywart.
