Has anyone here ever had Pleurisy?

Over the last day and a half I've felt increasingly awful. My joints ache and it hurts when I breathe deeply or when I sneeze or cough. Even a little jolt hurts. It's in my back and left shoulder....could it be pleurisy? What are the signs?

I will see GP tomrorrow if not bettee.

I had pleurisy after probable bronchitis (I wasn't in a position to go to the doctor for the coughing/chest infection, but that's what they suspected). It really felt like my lungs were sticking to my chest when I breathed (not just deep breaths but all breathing) and like someone else said it was quite 'rattly', very painful and quite scary. I don't recall anything else hurting though, and I think it was treated just by lots of ibuprofen (for the anti inflammatory effect as well as the pain).

giraffescantboogie · 17/09/2014 02:47

I am in tears with pain.

Not due any more meds. This is horrendous. Sad

TheWitchwithNoName · 17/09/2014 06:46

Please get yourself to the doctors, a complication of my plurisey (with puenmonia) was a partially collapsed lung. As I understand plurisey is normally a secondary infection, please get yourself checked out. Not even codine helped much, I really feel for you.

Surfsup1 · 17/09/2014 07:07

I had it a year ago - like being stabbed. Unfortunately I had it at the same time as pneumonia so I couldn't help the coughing - absolute agony! My doctor still give me pitying looks!
Get to your Dr - it's easily diagnosed.

DragonMamma · 17/09/2014 07:12

I had it with pneumonia and it came out of nowhere. I'd had an annoying cough for a while but otherwise felt fine until I woke at 3am thinking I was having a heart attack. I couldn't take a deep breath because of the pain and I had pains all down my left arm.

I ended up being off work for almost a month and I still get pain in that quadrant now.

DragonMamma · 17/09/2014 07:15

Oh and mine was definitely a lung pain and not a back or shoulder pain. It was in the lower half of my left lung and as somebody said upthread it was like my lungs were scraping against my ribcage.

Iggly · 17/09/2014 07:16

Yes I've had it. I kept having recurring bouts when I was doing a lot of running and my weight got quite low. Apparently there wasn't enough fat so my lungs were rubbing against my ribs Hmm - I was also very stressed with work so run down. The last time I had it I felt like death.

HumblePieMonster · 17/09/2014 07:18

I've had it a lot and its horrible. Like iron bands squeezing around your chest, preventing lungs from working properly and causing much pain.

Meglet · 17/09/2014 07:24

My sister had it years ago. It looked awful Sad.

You need to see the GP asap and hunker down at home to rest.

LottieMumofWilfJenkins · 17/09/2014 07:30

I had it when i was seventeen. Woke up one morning with it. It was HORRIBLE! Had two different GPs out to see me. The second one was my Dad's best friend and he was very kind to me. I had the joy of all sorts of heating engineers in and out of my bedroom as Dad was having a new system put in. They would wander in and it was "All right love??" Every time!!!

punter · 17/09/2014 07:46

I had it one Christmas and ended up in A&E after the GP just gave me some mild antibiotics. Terrible pain when I moved and coughed, as others have said like a knife going into your side. A most lovely Asian doctor was very kind and gentle and gave me stronger anti biotics, very very heavy pain killers (just sat in a corner on Boxing Day with a weird grin) and some anti inflammatory pills. All helped eventually but worse pain I have ever had. I changed my GP after that.
Go to the doctor asap.

hackmum · 17/09/2014 07:50

I've had it. I do think the symptoms vary slightly from person to person. I felt really ill and weak and barely able to move - like a bad case of flu. I had a nasty pain in my side, which initially I didn't associate with the feeling ill. I thought I'd somehow managed to pull a muscle. After four days of getting worse and worse I had an emergency appointment and the doctor diagnosed pleurisy and ordered best rest. I was also given antibiotics, which worked like an absolute dream.

StackladysMorphicResonator · 17/09/2014 08:01

DON'T call 999, pleurisy is bad and needs medical attention but it's not an emergency requiring an ambulance!

Go to your GP, they'll listen for a pleuritic rattle and may send you for a chest x-ray. You might have to go to hospital but you're most likely to be treated at home these days. Poor you, sounds really painful!

The other thing it could be is pulled intercostal muscles - this can also be incredibly painful, and make breathing deeply really sore, but isn't as serious as pleurisy and can be treated with anti-inflammatories and painkillers.

MrsWinnibago · 17/09/2014 08:22

I feel a bit better today but both my girls have got the same symptoms. I'm thinking it's some sort of flu thing....very achey all over and the back pain is part of that. They felt ill on Monday and I kept them home...then tuesday I sent them in and when I picked them up yesterday they were both white and exhausted.

Ive kept them home....oif they feel like me then I caan't send them in.x

If you have pleurisy you should lie on the side that is, sore, try heat for your pain Giraffes.

MrsWinnibago · 17/09/2014 17:31

Thinking of you mrs

My temp was so high today, I was back at dr. pain awful.

In bed with chips and shit tv.

Thanks COCO will try that

Cocolepew · 18/09/2014 19:39

How are you both today?

Coumarin · 18/09/2014 19:49

I've had awful joint pain for about two weeks. Utterly exhausted after 10 minutes of trying to do anything. Then yesterday I started getting a sharp stabbing pain to the left of my chest.

Maybe we have a similar thing MrsW

catgirl1976 · 18/09/2014 19:55

Yes it was agony

Hurt like hell. Very localised pain, just above my kidney but then spreading to the back.

Fever for weeks. In hospital for a few days.

Nasty :( Hope you are ok OP

MrsWinnibago · 18/09/2014 20:23

Getting there thank you Coco it really has been a shocker of a virus or whatever it is! I'm definitely better but today I did cycle and I was wet with sweat (tmi) and all shaky.....had a bit of sore throat....Coumarin yes that sounds like it....I've spoken to people at school and a taxi driver who've all had the same symptoms over the past two weeks.

Whatever it was it was nasty!

MrsWinnibago · 19/09/2014 03:58

I/m actually now worse. :( I woke up this mornign feeling all sort of ok.....did loads of housework, rode bike etc and then just woke up at 3,00am with pain in side again, shallow breath and aching joints.

I dont' know what this IS. THe DDs were up and down too....lucky younger DD seemed fine all yesterday....older Dd appears on mend but they both had same symptoms as me exactly.

Could it be viral pneumonia or something>?

How are you feeling now. If it's pleurisy you need diagnosis asapbut chest infections can make you feel very rough too.any chance of seeing the dr today?
