To ask are Marlboro Gold nicer than Silk Cut Silvers?

First up, I know smoking is bad for you. I don't smoke often. I have bought three packs of ten, and smoked three pouches of roll up tobacco this year. It is on nights out or very occassionally with a cup of coffee at the weekend. I really enjoy it, but feel no need to do it everyday.

It's about time for me to buy another pack of ten, and I wondered if I should try Marlboro lights (now marketed as gold, I think) instead of Silk Cut silvers? The silvers do feel a bit like smoking air if I have one after a roll up, but overall are fine.

Curious about Marlboro lights though!

Also, are Marlboro lights seen as chic and Silk Cut seen as unsophisticated? Or have I made that up?

Marlboro Lights are nice as far as cigarettes go. I think a bit heavier than Silk Cut Silver though.

I was smoking them when on holiday recently, €5 for 20! Seemed a bargain compared with the close to £8 we pay in the UK.

cherrybombxo · 07/09/2014 11:41

I quit two years ago but I smoked Silk Cut Silver for a while, they are like smoking air. Marlboro Golds were my 'payday' fags, I smoked them for two weeks until funds ran down then switched to Richmond Smooth until I got paid again Blush

In my defence I was in a house share on crap wages! I probably should have quit sooner to save money...

seasavage · 07/09/2014 11:46

Developing a brand = how I realised my addiction was sinking it's claws in.
And fwiw having caught my reflection in a window it is never sophisticated Confused

Andcake · 07/09/2014 11:54

From when I smoked I found silk cut horrid but loved Marlborough light - yum! Re tried one at work Xmas party after not smoking for over a year and couldn't stand it! Suppose I am now a non smoker which is good but god I used to love them

MaitlandGirl · 07/09/2014 12:13

Marlboro Gold are def a stronger smoke than silk cut silver but pretty smooth to smoke.

I'm jealous that you only pay £8 for a pack - I'm paying $25.75 (works out to be £14) for a pack of 25!! I really need to quit but can't quite bring myself to :( I really need more willpower.

They're all rank.

Buy an e cig...much nicer, cheaper, healthier and a huge range of flavours to choose from.

By the by...IME it's very uncommon for an 'irregular' smoker to stay as one forever. I've known lots over the years, who for ages and ages just smoke on holiday or the weekend or the evening. But without exception it's crept up and they end up being a 10 or 20 a day smoker.

If I were you I'd quit now before it gets too much of a hold.

Bragadocia · 07/09/2014 12:18

I haven't smoked for years now, but for the fifteen years I did, it was always Marlboro lights. Silk Cut only when I was nabbing them off my boyfriend, but it was never as satisfying. Sometimes they smell a bit like a joint though (not that that's a bad thing).

TidyDancer · 07/09/2014 12:22

I'm an occasional smoker and I love Marlboro Lights (still can't call them Gold!). Silk Cut were my uni cigarettes, after the Lights had all run out in the campus shop. They are definitely not as strong.

Smokingsocially · 07/09/2014 12:46

I think I may try the Marlboros. Am curious to see the different taste!

When I was a smoker it was always Marlboro Lights for me. I could never get a hit from Silk Cut no matter how hard I dragged.

Smokingsocially · 07/09/2014 12:51

I know lots of people do creep up and become habitual smokers. However, I have been doing this for over ten years without it ever becoming a daily event! With lots of periods of not having any at all. They're just something I enjoy in moderation, and I have to be in the right mood to have one, couldn't ever have one first thing in the morning etc.

Chocolate tends to be more of a go-to for me Grin

I used to smoke Marlboro Lights or rollups. Silk Cut always seemed like a rip off to me, really expensive and nothing comes out of them. I used to think they're more for the person who likes the habit of lighting up but doesn't actually like smoking, and has enough money to pay for air.

However, I stopped nearly two years ago, so what do I know nowadays.

Tittifilarious · 07/09/2014 13:10

Marlborough lights were "trendy" during the Britpop years - always references to them in NME. Kate Moss' favourite too I believe.

Smokingsocially · 07/09/2014 13:14

What I really want to try are Gauloise blondes, but think I have to wait until I next go to Paris to pick them up.

What about Marlboro Silver? I used to smoke Marlboro Gold for years, then switched to Silver and loved them.
Gave up 3years ago.

ScrambledeggLDCcakeBOAK · 07/09/2014 13:25

L&b silver for me.

Silk cuts are total boak!! (None of the pleasure (like air) but all of the risk)
They are also very expensive

I used to like the occasional Marlboro red if someone offered.

Try Marlboro

lordnoobson · 07/09/2014 13:26

wafts hand over nose and looks at your cats bum mouths

AnathemaIsANiceNameForAGirl · 07/09/2014 13:29

Marlboro Lights used to be my default brand. Bought Silk Cut once and found them totally pointless.

I also smoked Gauloises Blondes when I was pretentious a student. You could buy them in many shops in Edinburgh, don't know if you still can.

bridgetsmum · 07/09/2014 13:37

Ha ha ha ha ha ha

You are all so funny. Have you actually read what you're writing?
Smoother? Taste nice? Satisfying?
Are you kidding?
Get a grip! You're talking about disgusting smelly chemical filled death causing sticks.
There's nothing nice about any of them.
And there's no such thing as an occasional or social smoker, you are either stupid enough to fill your lungs with chemicals that will likely kill you or you're not.

Smoking is the single most pointless thing you can do, there are absolutely NO benefits to it just lots and lots of negatives. Why?

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/09/2014 13:38

I dunno, free basing crack cocaine in my bathroom would probably be more pointless.

WorraLiberty · 07/09/2014 13:40

Actually bridgetsmum I think you'll find ranting at anonymous smokers on the internet about their personal choices/addictions, is the single most pointless thing you can do.

But rant on, it's very amusing Grin

squoosh · 07/09/2014 13:41

Bore off bridgetsmum.
