She is a work colleague. Not in my department and I thought she was alright but I.am.shocked and disgusted.

I've also defriended someone tonight for a horrible status related to Germany & Argentina - some people are just wankers unfortunately.

Its just she seems to be branding the whole nation by the actions of an extremist group. I have German friends. Even if I didnt, I feel massively defensive against her awful.comment.

Maybe the colleague is referring to a Jewish friend, who lost ancestors in the Holocaust. It's possible.

So the Jewish friend is cheering Germany on, and she is then judging the Jewish friend for cheering on Germany "after what they did to their ancestors"?

Just adds another layer to it imo. The Jewish football fan can surrly cheer for whoever they want.

My DH is German and sadly people do make comments like that, im never sure how to deal with it.

I dont know what to do with it either. I want to stand up to it. I cannot be the only person who has seen it who has felt this opposed to it.

It is possible that someone they know to have lost family to the nazi's is celebrating Germany's win? And that X finds that odd/thinks they shouldnt celebrate?

I did remark to DH that I never thought I would see the day that I would be supporting Germany but that was in reference to the number of times Germany have beaten England in big competitions. Not because of wars! Idiots.

My instinctive criteria for fb defriending:

Blatant advertising at me via supposedly informal, friendly channel- so someone sat on my friend request for 2 years when she suddenly decided that i and 20 others were suddenly worth knowing in order to flog her forever living crap . Instant defriend.

People who have turned out not to be genuine in some way

If people can blame British people today for slavery and oppression of British empire countries in the past, or for that matter, any other country for doing the same years ago, I don't see how Germany should be left off the hook for something that happened within living people's lifetime. I think it's ridiculous to blame individual Germans who weren't even alive at the time, and I haven't got a problem with Germany as a country. But there is a double standard I think.

And I should add, choosing allegiance at football due to past wars is absolutely ridiculous.

If they're Jewish they'd also know that Argentina supported the Nazis during the war and many Nazi war criminals fled to Argentina and lived there for years.
