X is feeling disgusted, with the comment "cannot believe why certain people are cheering for Germany. Have they forgotten what they did to their ancestors?"

Wtaf!?!?

I am disgusted at reading that! I am defriendig but I dont know whether to tackle it first.

She is a work colleague. Not in my department and I thought she was alright but I.am.shocked and disgusted.

But the footballers and residents of current Germany cannot be held accountable for the actions of the Nazis.

Oh yes, i agree, i was just trying to work out X's logic. I disagree with it though.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 13/07/2014 23:55

Tusc id feel the same if I saw friends or coleagues doing that too. Not just anti-Germany comments.

Are you friends with my Great-Gran on FB?

She was on the phone earlier when they scored and I cheered (I'm not a supporter just that I didn't think the Argentinians played fair), apparently I was disrespecting my ancestors who fought to free "us" from "them" by supporting "that country".

We are Scottish and her family were Catholics so I wasn't aware "we" were oppressed, not to mention the fact that I'm pretty sure there were no 1930's Nazi's in the German squad.

Although to be fair she is 86.

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 13/07/2014 23:59

Tucson its only a double standard if it is the same people doing both. I.e: jimmy smith saying current Britain bad for years of oppression in Ireland in the past but germany ok.

AlpacaLypse · 13/07/2014 23:59

I supported Germany tonight. Mainly because whenever they've beaten England it's been fair and square and England deserved to lose.

Whereas I will never forget nor forgive Maradona's Hand Of God goal.

(Also Ancestry.com obsessed sister has recently uncovered a German x-3 great granny)

GiantIsopod · 14/07/2014 00:03

My family are/were German Jewish, I was raised Jewish, but I still preferred Germany to win. My mother will not visit Germany, ever, but she suffered as a result of the effects of the holocaust on my grandparents (they were both survivors). I understand that. But, I don't get how you should be made to feel ashamed for cheering on a team? You can cheer for who you want, you are free to support who you want. Are we to judge them for what their grandparents did? Even great grandparents? Horrible status.

TucsonGirl · 14/07/2014 00:03

"Its just she seems to be branding the whole nation by the actions of an extremist group."
I'm not sure you can say that Hitler et al were an extremist group. They were democratically voted into power. It's not like only a minority of Germans were supporters of Nazism. Granted it has nothing to do with the German national team that just won the World Cup, but that's by the by. I know the team has at least one black player and I think several players of Turkish ethnicity. Not what Hitler had in mind really.

TucsonGirl · 14/07/2014 00:04

Squtternutbaush did your gran forget about the Falklands war? Or did she just think British people shouldn't be supporting either side?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 14/07/2014 00:05

Sorry I mean extremist in the sense that their.methods were extreme.

OP posts:
WannabeMrsJoshHomme · 14/07/2014 00:08

sigh, it's the sort of thing people who think they're much smarter than they actually are come out with. basically they know fuck all about germany therefore can only associate it with one thing. narrow-minded and boring.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 14/07/2014 00:11

My dh is German and I have people make comments to me for being a traitor

It is something that worries me for my kids as they have a very German surname. I don't want them being made to feel they should be ashamed of their family

ICanSeeTheSun · 14/07/2014 00:12

Nothing surprises me on Facebook no more, I kind of expected it

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 14/07/2014 00:13

That is awful Build

OP posts:
Squtternutbaush · 14/07/2014 00:13

Tucson I have no idea about the Falklands war, I think she's going a bit senile tbh.

She is still convinced that the Germans are evil and witters on about a rather large scale blitz near her home.I get that it must've been terrifying and traumatic to witness but get over it :o

WannabeMrsJoshHomme · 14/07/2014 00:14

I can't believe how warped some people's brains must be to come across something or someone German and immediately think of the wars..

GiantIsopod · 14/07/2014 00:14

Argentina took in Nazis. America, Britain, loads of countries over the world, turned away Jews. Russian Jews did not have a good time of it. Gay and disabled survivors were not treated well. Germany obviously had the biggest and worst part, but very few of those involved on the other side were completely morally superior.

We can only blame people for what they did. I can't blame current white Americans for slavery. They did not institute it or continue it. They were not involved. They are not their ancestors.

TheHandbagOfGlory · 14/07/2014 00:28

Build I know how that feels, I really worry for my kids for that reason too.

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/07/2014 00:40

And I should add, choosing allegiance at football due to past wars is absolutely ridiculous

Agreed. I chose Brazil as I was hoping for a rerun of their wonderful 1994,1998 (excluding the final) and 2002 teams and the Netherlands as Amsterdam is my favourite city and to paraphrase an old Spitting Image sketch "I've never met a nasty Dutch person"

Brazil and probably Holland are likely to have preferred a German win.

Did anyone else spot the banner in the German crowd saying "We won't let Argentina win in your home"

Happy36 · 14/07/2014 01:06

Just ignore. De-friend her if you are really upset, otherwise chalk it up to one-off thoughtlessness.

If she makes a similar comment verbally, call her out on it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/07/2014 01:09

Did you point out that the Falklands war was rather more recent and that there is on going bad feeling on Argentina's side?

It amazes me how thick some people are.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 14/07/2014 08:05

De friended her last night. Will only comment if she brings it up verbally around or to me.

OP posts:
MrsSlocombesPussy · 14/07/2014 08:39

My aunt and uncle dread any England-Germany football matches. My lovely uncle is German, and has lived here for about 50 years. Last time England lost to Germany he was verbally abused in the street by one of his neighbours. Their children were always picked on for having a German surname too.

manicinsomniac · 14/07/2014 09:27

After the Brazil-England semi a lot of my Brazilian friends were posting cartoons and slogan posters based around pictures of Hitler. I considered saying how inappropriate it was but then realised that they probably have no concept of European history and cultural acceptability and that few non Brazilians would see them anyway.

For a British person to post anti German sentiments is somewhat different though. YANBU.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 14/07/2014 10:12

It sadly does not surprise me. I was explaining to a friend recently about a trip to Germany I took some years ago and about the various buildings, the food and the people I met there and she was disgusted I would visit there at all. I pointed out that as an American a lot of people are disgusted at the current war on womens reproductive rights but she did not get it.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 14/07/2014 10:33

My great uncle was a pow for most of the war and he actually holds great affection for Germans and Germany and got on famously with dh!

Most of the people who comment tend to have very little direct experience with either Germans or Germany.

Ds is loud and proud of the German football team and his friends have all rallied to his cause because they are 7 and him being half German is no different to the boy who is half French. Andrhu are all mad about fotball and liked the way they olayed. Long may that continue!
