AIBU to have concerns about returning to UK

We are in the process of moving back to the Uk. Dh's job mainly, but I would like the kids to 'know their roots' too.
The more I read about the UK at the moment I am beginning to wonder if it is really such a good idea after all.
We have a nice house in a quiet village. Kids are at a good school. Life is a little hum-drum but nothing major to complain about.
I'm concerned about schools, areas to move too, crime, politics. Practically everything really.
Is it as bad as the newspapers make out????

Yup. Depends where you move to. If you move to a sleepy village then you're in for more of the same.

Depends where you are, and how much you believe what you read in the papers. If I read the Daily Mail, I wouldn't want to live here either. But I don't, and I seem to get by okay as a result.

Where do you live just now? It depends if you believe everything you read in the papers! As an example satisfaction ratings with the NHS are above 90% but if you believed everything you read in the papers you wouldn't go near it.

What are you expecting to return to? Packs of feral children roaming the streets? Where do you live at the moment?

Which country do you live in where there is no crime, no controversial politics, no less than lovely areas and only perfect schools?

The newspapers aren't going to put all the good news in there. No, it's not bad at all. There are downsides like anywhere, but I doubt it's changed much since you left except in superficial ways.

We moved back a couple of years ago after 10 years away and love being back, ds has settled well into school life here and we have all made some great friends (didn't move back to our home towns)

Don't believe everything you read in the papers

Think I have to stop reading the newspapers really. I watch BBC World for the general stuff, but I have been guilty of reading the Mail.
I am originally from London area, living in Scandinavia. Dh will need access to main transport links. We were thinking Scotland initially but don't know what (if anything) will change after the referendum.

Depends on where you are now.

We've lived out of the UK for 6 years now and on a recent visit back I was shocked how cold, wet and grey it was. How kids there talked and behaved and how miserable people seemed to be generally, I know things have been bad there but people seemed to have the weight of the world on their shoulders. We're from a large town and it was so dirty compared to where we are now, there is also a lot of crime and I didn't feel safe walking around in the evening in my home town where I grew up. The whole visit made me feel sad and like I don't want to go back even to visit for a long time. I think when you've been gone a while you see things in a different light when you visit.

Friends and family there are having nightmares with their kids having to go to different schools, and a lot aren't happy with the education in general. The NHS is good but we have a good (and faster) system where we are now.

You couldn't pay me to move back there.

BTW I'm not saying all of the UK is like that. It was just my recent experience.

I'd move to another country if I was younger. I think life can be an uphill struggle in the UK for people. (I know there are a lot worse countries than this.) I worry about the younger generation and housing and health service and education Which are all struggling.

Scotland might be good for thinking ahead to Uni's (they're free in Scotland aren't they - which seems a massive incentive to live there if it could be an option?)
And seems that you quite like a quieter sort of life, which you could find in some parts of Scotland?

If you're thinking of Scotland but concerned about the referendum, what about Wales? Less inequality than England, better lifestyle, more hills, more sea, lovely beaches . . . Mind you, transport links not so great from the nicest bits!
