WIBU to paint our bedroom orange?

We got a bit of wall replastered in our bedroom and now we're getting ready to paint over the boring, dingy magnolia. I'm going to sew new curtains too, and there's a neutral rug.

To give a bit of context, I love to paint. Since we've moved in I've painted the living room coral/peach, the kitchen teal, the basement yellow, and the bathroom seafoam green. It's a dark terraced house so we try to make things bright.

At first my husband said I had free rein for the bedroom so I was thinking sky blue... lilac... But then this morning he confessed he really really wants...orange.

Orange. Orange. He wants zig-zaggy orangey curtains too.

I can't get my head round it. Orange bedroom? I can tell he really wants it but orange.

Could an orange bedroom work?

Remember all those lovely orange candlewick bedspreads and polyester eiderdowns!

No, he showed me some of the tones he had in mind. It would be more like fucking in an overripe pumpkin.

Oh dear god, I thought maybe having retro orange wallpaper on one of the walls would make it better. I had a look at the designs out there.

Not a good place to have orange, seriously, as like red it is a high energy colour which will zap your strength, NOT relaxing at all. Not sure about now but fast food outlets had orange chairs for that reason, a higher turnover.

We have orange and yellow, and I think it's lovely and sunny. The furniture and floor are a light wood, which tones it all down.

Fortunately I close my eyes when I sleep, so don't wake up exhausted Deathraystare!!

I actually saw some orange fabric in a Moroccan lattice pattern. I thought, ah, that gives it a calm, desert sort of feel.

So maybe we can compromise on orange if I get to pick the Moroccan-y curtains (we have curtains covering the wardrobe too so it's a big part of the room).

My friends bedroom is bright orange with black accessories it's actually really nice

Our youngest's room is orange and yellow. Looks brilliant - really bright and sunny.

Could you try for a darker orange, like terracota? You could do that on one or two walls only, and team it with light blue to create a Moroccan style, and also to tone down the brightness of the orange?

Would you be changing the bedding too? That could be pale/neutral. And hang a really big picture or mirror on the wall - that way it's mostly covered up anyway so you won't see it much!

But no, I take your point about the blues and dusty oranges. I might be able to gently lead my husband away from Groovy Tangerine Dream over to Desert Hideaway.

How about neutral walls (maybe one feature wall) and lots of orange soft furnishings and accessories.

We still have an orange, shag pile carpet in one of our bedrooms ......

We used to have a kind of burnt orange colour on our walls about 15yrs ago and it looked really nice.

It wasn't really bright either.

Our bedroom was bright orange/yellow for ages (previous owners) we are only changing it now because it's actually full of light and gets hot so a cooler colour would be better (it's south-facing).

I had an orange bedroom in the 60s. It was fab.

I think it will work, as long as not everything is orange.

When we redecorated the dc got to choose paint colours. Girls room is sunshine yellow with orange and black accessories, the boys chose lime green with matching accessories. Dh chose a dark red with black accessories for our room.

It's growing on me (and a fair trade off as I chose the colours for the rest of the house)

My teenage bedroom was yellow on top, orange on the bottom. V warmand sunny and lovely.
