AIBU?

To ask if anyone else self sabotages with constant procrastination when it comes to studying?

I've two essays due in by next Thursday. They are finals, so important and yet I have just twatted around for weeks, they'll get a passing mark, they always do but probably not nearly as good as it could have been. I've exams next month, again I will pass most likely but not nearly as well as I could have done.

I love the subject and achieving a degree means a huge amount to me (no encouragement or possibility as a child or teenager), I will always regret this if I screw it up, it's my last chance really, got transitional fees with the OU. I won't be as educated as I could be even if I pass simply because I couldn't be arsed.

So WHY? WHY? Do I do this? I have two autistic children, home educating one of them and am a single parent, it's hard, once they've gone to bed, I'm so knackered I just want to veg in front of the TV, but with self discipline I could easily find the time. Is anyone else like this? and if anyone could explain the psychology behind it that might help.

Well done Tequila. Klein, Winnicott, Maslow, Bowlby etc for the next one?

I am about half way through mine now. I am putting somebody's ideas into societal and psychoanalytical context and imo she had too many bloody ideas.

I'm doing psychology too tequila.

Managed to get a decent first draft done this morning whilst dp took the boys to grandparents. So will flesh it out and tart it up after both boys are in bed tonight.

Need to move DS2 (3 months old) into DS1s cot tonight. Can't co sleep with him anymore, he snores (loudly) and stretches himself out. I am feeling the effects of practically no sleep and I need to get a good night's sleep to finish this report.

Yesss I'm sick of reading about Bowlby and Ainsworth already! It's an interesting subject and any other day I'd like to read about it, but having to write about it sucks all my interest out!

ooof that sounds difficult!

Maintaining interest is difficult, I was researching this for a month and writing it for another month so everything is a little too familiar IYSWIM.

The actual writing isnt too bad once I stop distracting myself Grin

How do you feel about psychology enormouse? I really dislike it, it's not a subject for me but I have no choice

Report
enormouse · 05/05/2014 14:46

I do find it very interesting, well certain subjects.
This would be interesting (cognitive psychology and memory) but the research report is sucking the fun out of it.
As is all the independent variable, sampling, random measures malarky.
I hate statistics with a passion.

I can't wait to finish this year and apply for uni next year. Hoping to do speech therapy.
Do you have another year left to your access tequila?

I'm doing it right now...

I'm doing an access too btw but I think it's a level 4, possibly - (would get me into year 2 of a psychology degree). It's combined social and behavioural science.

This is my last year, I'm going to uni in september Grin

I love abnormal behaviour, but find the theories so heavy and boring

I saw a great (and funny) site about why procrastinators procrastinate. It's here (if this link works.)

I may well be in the dark playground hedge and the instant gratification monkey looks a lot like 2 year old DS1.

What course are you going to do tequila? Btw I think you're getting a pretty rough ride on the dentists/sugar thread.

I managed five hours of study today starting just after 8am. I am now putting off doing some gardening - which I am actually looking forward to. What's that about Hmm? Have already been to B&Q and had a coffee.....

You have your rationale Snow but someone who is naturally gifted should get the reward if they get the marks otherwise it's all about effort and not recognising talent surely?

Yes. Not studying but want to restart my fledgling freelance writer career that got sidelined when DD came along nearly 10 years agoBlush .

I only work 24 hours a week, but by the time I've done the school run, spent time with DD, cooked, cleared up, got her to bed and had a bath it's gone 9pm and I just can't knuckle down to it.

Also keep putting it off 'until the study' is finished...been in progress for nearly 2 years now.

Am really fed up with my current job and it's the only way out that will fit as well around family life so why I can't get myself motivated is a mystery Confused .

How are all my other procrastinating friends today?

I have made some more progress this morning. I am up to page 9 and 6500 words, which is massive progress as I was on page 4 and 2500 words on Sunday morning.

I reckon I have 3 more pages and another 2-3000 words to go. Then references and bibliography and I can finally send it off.

I've still got 1.5 essays to do and a creative writing project by tomorrow lunchtime. I've just chased up my extension.

Well done Uterus.

...and got rudely interrupted whilst posting!

Found a local company who are expanding and wanting to get a bank of freelancers on board with writing, design & social media skills - all of which is right up my street, so Friday's job will be brushing up my CV.

I am so glad other people are like this, I finished an OU module in March which included an e-portfolio that is supposed to take 18 months to do, I ended up doing it in three days.Blush I passed but could have done better. The same thing happened with my genetics module, I ended up doing the EMA without having read the book, just with the aid of google and the index, again a pass but could have achieved a bit better if only I'd got off my backside and studied.

Urgh i am also procrastinating, I'm two weeks behind with my studying. I leave everything until last minute, especially my studying.

Feeling quite smug now - all online lectures completed. I have a month to learn everything without feeling the pressure of doing the lectures. I've also just ordered a stack of annuals for the garden so will have to tackle planting those just around the time a mock exam is due in....hmm.
