Circumcision: A Social Status in the UK ?

Amazonia · 25/04/2014 09:06

Curiously in the UK, circumcision is now a matter of social class. While the "ordinary" folks rarely circumcise, circumcision is prevalent in the upper class as well as in the Royal family.

That article says it used to be a royal practice but is dying out ages ago.

So a bit of a pointless debate really Confused

ouryve · 25/04/2014 11:22

That's nice, dear.

On ucoin, 41 users have 1997 1 peseta coins. DS1 told me this, last night, so I thought you'd care as much about his wisdom as I do yours, OP.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 25/04/2014 11:23

This used to be true, so my dad says. He comes from an upper middle class background and he was circumcised. However he said he believes that's moving out of fashion, although I don't know how he would know since he doesn't know anybody of that background to ask!

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 25/04/2014 11:24

Well what do you know, that article says the same.

Endymion · 25/04/2014 11:29

I think you've woken up in 1930s/1940s.

Used to be the case pre-war and possibly post war I think.

But thankfully died out as a cultural practice among the upper classes after then I think.

HanSolo · 25/04/2014 11:30

Circumcision in the UK has always been a matter of class! Hmm

UC always circumcised. Not a matter of class now though, is it? Not many UC muslims in the UK...

Amazonia · 25/04/2014 11:37

Has it really died out? Or is it only mere thinking? I saw a lot of gossips around Prince George's circumcision. Some people say he was, others are in doubt. Finally, no one really knows, right?

Pre-war is also pre-NHS. So it's a marker of class only by proxy (did you have the disposable income for the procedure?)

Surveys of numbers of those born before 1945 put the rate at about 30% (which is far more than UC/UMC in the whole population), and in the debate that followed it fell to about 25%. It then continued to fall to well below 5% (and the paper I looked at puts non-therapeutic rate at about 3% now, but no info on class or religion).

riskit4abiskit · 25/04/2014 11:38

Well my dh has a well common willy. It was done after an infection when he was a child.

stooshe · 25/04/2014 11:38

HanSolo....Jews circumcise as a matter of religion, too. Just sayin'.

HanSolo · 25/04/2014 11:41

Stooshe- I'm perfectly aware of that! However, Jewish people in the UK tend to be more well-to-do than muslims, on the whole, possibly because in general their families have been here longer.

However, both groups are outside the UK class system in the main, as incomers.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 25/04/2014 11:43

Why does anyone care about prince George's penis? Beak out.

ikeaismylocal · 25/04/2014 11:44

*Prince William didnt look as though he'd been circumcised

When did you see prince William's penis? Are you his wife?

Amazonia · 25/04/2014 11:45

meditrina: These statistics pertain to circumcision at birth, right? It does not tell if the baby is likely to be circumcised later... I do not think there are any statistics indicating the number of babies who got circumcision in the 1st or 2nd year of their life. Only nannies will be able to give you that part of the story LOL.

Amazonia It's an old Communist slogan. See yours of 11.10.48. Just being coarse.

TheNightIsDark · 25/04/2014 12:18

I need to know if you've seen William's penis. was it kingly? Harry's?

whatadrama · 25/04/2014 12:21

ikea i've been on Mumsnet far too long and saw the Rugby pitch pic Grin

SanityClause · 25/04/2014 12:32

That quote is from the bible, Amazonia.

Andrewofgg · 25/04/2014 12:51

I stand corrected! Can you give me chapter and verse?

Madamecastafiore · 25/04/2014 12:57

What a load of baloney! We are common as muck and DH and DS done. Not class thing. Tight fused foreskin thing!

meditrina · 25/04/2014 13:06

It was a meta-analysis - sone papers covered only infant circumcision, others all boys up to age 11, 15 or 17. The post-2000 stats all referred to infants - the older data was more varied.

meditrina · 25/04/2014 13:10

There's a whole wiki page on that quotation. The concept is in the New Testament (Acts 4:23-35) but this wording is Marx. Draw?

Andrewofgg · 25/04/2014 13:12

Draw!
