... to wish that I could smoke indoors again?

Yeah, I know, smokers stink, what about Roy Castle, you make my clothes smell, cancer sticks, idiot sticks etc. But there was something nice about having a pint and a fag, or a cup of tea and a fag, or watching telly with a fag, or punctuating the good bit of a book with a fag, or staying up all night writing an essay with a hundred fags. I miss it. Plus these days people seem to be offended by a fag even in the open air, or by vaping which as far as I can make out is similar in effect to standing next to a boiling kettle. Anybody else nostalgic for days gone by when tenants could do as they liked in their own living-rooms?

yes

Inspirationless · 18/04/2014 20:29

Yanbu!

bluehazegreenfields · 18/04/2014 20:30

Yes, and I don't even smoke. I do find the vilification of smokers both boring and hysterical.

nulgirl · 18/04/2014 20:32

I am as of 4 weeks ago a non-smoker but I used to love smoking inside on the very rare occasion that I could. I travel to London for work and found a hotel that had a smoking bedroom (with lots of windows and balcony to get rid of smell). It was so decadent lying in bed watching TV and smoking.

Bowlersarm · 18/04/2014 20:33

No. Tis a bad bad habit.

OddBoots · 18/04/2014 20:34

I wish my neighbours would smoke in their own home rather than smoking near my living room window.

IHaveSeenMyHat · 18/04/2014 20:34

But people CAN smoke in the privacy of their own homes, there are no laws.

Landlords not wanting tenants to smoke is a separate issue. And I can understand why a LL wouldn't want to have to fully redecorate after a smoker moved out - the staining and smells clinging to carpets/soft furnishings is expensive to fix.

halfdrunktea · 18/04/2014 20:36

No, not at all! YABU.
I admit I've never smoked so find it hard to see things from a smoker's perspective - but as a non-smoker I only wish the ban had come in years before it did. There is something nice about being able to go out without having to breathe in other people's smoke, being able to rent a property that doesn't stink of previous tenant's smoke and being able to go to a cafe that doesn't stink of smoke and much more...

Rommell · 18/04/2014 20:37

Truly, that is a golden thing to do.

[reminisces]

Wish I could stay on this thread and reminisce about smoking in forbidden places - on the sofa, pubs, airplanes, school playgrounds (when I was in France) but it is making me seriously crave a cigarette.

Rommell · 18/04/2014 20:45

Sorry, nulgirl - didn't mean to rake up old memories and congrats on quitting!

What IHave said.

I fully support the smoking ban in public places though.

But all of them ban it these days. We're paying off their mortgages for them and building up their property empires and we can't even have a fag in our own homes.

For shame.

OP posts:
Rommell · 18/04/2014 20:51

True, EatShitDerek. I went in a pub the other night and the overpowering smell of stale beer and BO was much worse than anything I could create with my Mighty Fag Of Doom.

Hell no! Life is so much better now.

Yalu

phlebasconsidered · 18/04/2014 20:52

I will never ever be a non-smoker, even though i've not had a fag in 7 years. Because i love them, and always will. I will always mourn my knocking off for the day fag, which for me was my first of the day. It was so lovely to have a cuppa / glass of wine and a fag and go "ahhhhhh".

However, I do concede that watching disney movies at the flicks in the 80's would have been nicer without the smoke, although then i'd have struggled to get anyone to take me. How I lived this long is a miracle considering the flammability of my clothing and drambuie and fag habit of my mum.

eurochick · 18/04/2014 20:53

But you can do most of those things in your own home now if you want to stink it out.

Bogeyface · 18/04/2014 20:54

YANBU

Beer tastes better with fags, fags taste better than beer - FACT.

And I would much rather smell fag smoke in a pub than unwashed bodies, stale beer and farts!

And I have given up!

Dawndonnaagain · 18/04/2014 20:55

My sister has been given up eleven years. I have been given up two and half years. We're having a fag when we get to eighty. Don't really care where it is, but we're having one!

Bogeyface · 18/04/2014 20:56

didnt read Dereks post before I wrote mine!

I remember going to our local when the ban first came in and the smell was horrendous! Either I have got used to it or the smelly bastards in the bar have started changing their pants more often!

GrassIsSinging · 18/04/2014 20:57

Get into vaping! Its fab. I smoke in bed Grin....when I was a cig smoker, I was forever standing outside in the rain and then coming in smelling like an ashtray. Now I can puff away anywhere and smell lurvely.

letsgotostonehenge · 18/04/2014 20:58

yeah if it doesn't explode in your face grassy

pigsDOfly · 18/04/2014 21:01

I'm an ex smoker of some years and although I now have no wish to smoke I do miss the pleasure that you used to get from a cigarette for instance, with a cup of coffee after a good meal.

I don't particularly like the smell of it now but would far rather experience the smell of a cigarette over the pungent stink of weed that seems to be everywhere as I walk around my home town.

Owllady · 18/04/2014 21:03

Don't smoke indoors it's horrible
I understand its cold outside though but it's better that way (light smoker)
