Boring wedding AIBU

DP and I are having a minor disagreement over ice cream (we are having this instead of formal pudding). I will print out the thread and we will go with the majority opinion.

We are having our wedding party (not really a reception - we are getting married much earlier in the year) in a stately home-type place. At least 15 of the 100 guests are children and there will be an open alcoholic bar. In your experience:

a) It's better to hire an ice cream van because mess will be self-contained and outside.

b) It's much more cool (and cheap) to buy loads of lovely ice cream, toppings etc. and let people assemble their own indoors from an 'ice cream bar'. They can be trusted not to make a mess.

Who is U, a) or b)?

A, a thousand times A. B will be sloppy messy and yuck. I wouldn't have any from B.

vestandknickers · 06/04/2014 18:17

A. My children would take far too much at a help yourself thingy and then leave most of it and then I'd get all tense and cross!

Don't suppose the adults will be that fussed about either option. Ice cream from a van is minging but it is tidy and the children will love it.

ADishBestEatenCold · 06/04/2014 18:18

If it's pouring with rain, will the ice cream van be practical?

I'd go with b then you can include some grown up toppings.

Ice Cream with your favourite liqueur sloshed over the top! Ice cream with (real) rum and raisins! Grin

shewhowines · 06/04/2014 18:18

B nicer
A more practical

GrendelsMum · 06/04/2014 18:24

We did a similar thing, wedding wise, and based on my experience, I'd say a. Everyone wanted to explore the stately home and grounds, so having nice ice creams to take with you as you went round outsdie would have gone down well.

TeaAndALemonTart · 06/04/2014 18:27

A otherwise you'll end up with a sloppy mess.

WelshMaenad · 06/04/2014 18:30

A for sure.

I work for a small scale high quality ice cream producer and we have a selection of event units, at my sisters wedding we had a small cart inside rather than a full on van. It's quality ice cream and we can do little sundae cups as well as cones plus loads of toppings, and teddy cones for kids. We price on number of guests then ice cream is unlimited. It's a good compromise if you don't want cheap whippy style ice cream. If you can find something similar in your area I think that would work quite well. You could phone the Uce Cream Alliance to see if they have a member offering something like that in your vicinity. Or if you are in the South Wales area just PM me and I'll sort you out with a quote ;-)

WelshMaenad · 06/04/2014 18:30

Ice cream alliance, obviously.

nkf · 06/04/2014 18:34

What if it's raining?

JennyCalendar · 06/04/2014 18:39

I was originally going to say B because I was picturing a Mr Whippy van for A!

I've now changed my mind and say A for a proper ice cream barrow. You could have a selection of toppings on each table to speed it up and so the guests have the fun of creating their own.

Pipbin · 06/04/2014 18:45

B is good, but only if there is someone there to run it.
Otherwise A is the better option.

Katekate77 · 06/04/2014 18:46

Ice cream van! What a great idea!! Grin

CountessOfRule · 06/04/2014 18:47

I'm sure a proper ice cream setup would have an umbrella or awning. Surely they fetch their ice from outside then go back in to the party?

redexpat · 06/04/2014 18:49

I like A.

Comeatmefam · 06/04/2014 18:49

A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A

Justnapping · 06/04/2014 18:50

A

OneUp · 06/04/2014 18:54

A sounds cute :)

SconeRhymesWithGone · 06/04/2014 18:54

B for me.

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 06/04/2014 18:59

Go with a nice cream van and give out cake cases (the baking type for fairy cakes) to slot through the ice lolly stick/ice cream cone to catch the drips. Less messier still!

givemeaclue · 06/04/2014 19:02

A but only if good quality ice cream, not Mr whipy.I can't see how you would keep the ice cream frozen during the serving period for B. Will adults be interested in ice cream? Perhaps if farm or gourmet

sunshinysummer · 06/04/2014 19:30

A definitely.
B sounds like a messy free for all with the potential for lots of hyped up full of sugar, sickly kids! At least quantities could be smaller with option a!

MacademiaNut · 06/04/2014 19:34

Choc ices could be another option.

Yama · 06/04/2014 19:37

B sounds like much more fun.

I would much rather B at a wedding. Much more memorable as well.

TheKnightsThatSayNee · 06/04/2014 19:42

A or this kinda thing.

MrGeresHamster · 06/04/2014 19:44

I vote to go for A.
