Boring wedding AIBU

DP and I are having a minor disagreement over ice cream (we are having this instead of formal pudding). I will print out the thread and we will go with the majority opinion.

We are having our wedding party (not really a reception - we are getting married much earlier in the year) in a stately home-type place. At least 15 of the 100 guests are children and there will be an open alcoholic bar. In your experience:

a) It's better to hire an ice cream van because mess will be self-contained and outside.

b) It's much more cool (and cheap) to buy loads of lovely ice cream, toppings etc. and let people assemble their own indoors from an 'ice cream bar'. They can be trusted not to make a mess.

Who is U, a) or b)?

Definitely A, but not just a Mr Whippy - some good quality ice creams with toppings.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 06/04/2014 17:19

I like the idea of the ice cream bar better, assuming it's for everyone not just the kids - and parents should be supervising their children when they are getting theirs!

FunkyBoldRibena · 06/04/2014 17:19

A.

MuttonCadet · 06/04/2014 17:21

I think the van would be better. (But I think you want B)

GlaikitFizzog · 06/04/2014 17:22

A, otherwise you run the risk of mess.

Have you ever tried to get ice team scooped out nicely and cleanly (I now just eat right from the tub)

You could do a bit of both have the van and then all the toppings and sauces to the side for people to help themselves.

wrapsuperstar · 06/04/2014 17:25

a) will have much more of a sense of occasion, so long as you hire something pretty with high quality ice cream. A quick google search yielded this: www.pollys-parlour.co.uk/hiring-florence/ There are loads of others out there.
Not a big fan of that self-consciously vintage vibe, but it definitely is more weddingy than a Mr Whippy van.

The idea of a bar, whilst tasty, does sound chaotic and possibly a bit unhygienic.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/04/2014 17:25

I think a is way way cooler. I'd have loved that as a kid and tbh I'd love it now

Either way, have a lovely day

500internalerror · 06/04/2014 17:26

I think you want A and your Dh wants B! Vans can do banana splits & all sorts you know :)

SomethingAboutNothing · 06/04/2014 17:30

I think A would be better but as someone said up thread, a nice old fashioned ice cream wheelbarrow would be brilliant.

wejammin · 06/04/2014 17:30

we had a vintage-y style van and it went down really well with adults and kids.

MummyBeerest · 06/04/2014 17:32

A, no question. Sounds awesome!

Clargo55 · 06/04/2014 17:37

I would go with A.

Fortysomethingwinelover · 06/04/2014 17:40

I would go with A.

Jellymum1 · 06/04/2014 17:41

my vote is a.

Ploppy16 · 06/04/2014 17:43

Option B sounds a lot of fun but option A will be more practical and will save you from complaining parents when the inevitable mess happens Smile
Both sound like a really great idea though!

minniemagoo · 06/04/2014 17:43

Our loca? fab ice cream shop do a mobile service for parties, if thats the type of van then a. Otherwise b, had ice cream from those vans with the crap music. Its not real ice cream.

jdd · 06/04/2014 17:44

I'd vote A as long as it contains a good selection and some toppings. I would enjoy that as a guest and it would be less hassle for you.

B, to me sounds just like the guests having to serve their own dessert which could get messy and unhygienic with kids.

Bunbaker · 06/04/2014 17:45

A will be more practical, but don't get one that sells that nasty Mr Whippy stuff.

RedFocus · 06/04/2014 17:45

B! An ice cream van sounds a bit tacky (like those silly photos booths, I prefer disposable cameras at the tables)
My kids make their own ice creams in Pizza Hut and don't make a mess.

ENormaSnob · 06/04/2014 17:47

Will there be flakes?

TheListingAttic · 06/04/2014 17:51

Are you UK? B, because of the inevitable possibility of rain.

dulldeirdre · 06/04/2014 17:55

both sound wonderful

Kitsmummy · 06/04/2014 17:57

A definitely. With the free alcoholic bar parents won't be supervising their kids too much, the kids will go crazy over the ice cream free for all and you will end up with ice cream and hundreds of thousands everywhere, and also the guests will get ice cream over their hands while doing it and v soon the ice cream bar would look a mess

Princess28 · 06/04/2014 17:59

We had a man with a bicycle and an old fashioned cart. Unlimited ice cream for 3 hours I think. We chose loads of different flavours and included sorbets for the ones who were dairy free. So option c! (But if I had to pick one of yours I would say option A)

Foxsticks · 06/04/2014 18:04

A if its nice ice cream
